For some it may come as a surprise that Burgundy’s enfant terrible—the winemaker behind one of the Mâconnais’ greatest Domaines—now makes wine in Bordeaux. And as you can read below, Jean-Marie Guffens has hit the ground running. His first vintage was in 2017 and yet he is already producing sweet wines to rival the most revered names of the Graves. Move over, Rover, and let Guffens take over.


One of Barsac’s smallest properties, Château Closiot’s vines sit on the famed Clos Bonneau, an exceptional terroir where red earth dotted with pebbles rests on the Barsac plateau’s limestone base. The soils are relatively cool, imbuing Guffens’ wines with mineral steel and freshness to offset his late-picked fruit. Rather than use the morning mists, Guffens prefers harvesting under the first rays of the sun to obtain more concentrated botrytis. His team collects a meticulous selection of berries in a harvest that lasts up to eight weeks. Other idiosyncrasies include the use of small wooden basket presses to extract more phenolic power, whilst remarkably low levels of sulphites result in more expressive young wines than most Sauternes-Barsac.


The baroque Cuvée Bonneau is mesmerising, yet in great vintages Guffens also crafts a best-of-the-best cuvée named after the Estate’s parcel of 100-year-old vines: Les Dames de Bonneau. This wine comes from a painstaking selection of pure, botrytised Semillon berries. It is one of the most memorable Barsacs we have tasted: a seemingly ageless wine of aromatic intensity, concentration and underlying energy.  For sheer might and personality, it has few rivals. Rather like the winemaker behind it. Indeed, in only it’s sophomore release, the 2022 Les Dames was rated second in The Wine Advocate’s Sauternes-Barsac Report, right behind the wine that inspired Guffens to make Barsac in the first place—d’Yquem!

The Wines

Château Closiot covers eight hectares, making it one of the smallest in Barsac (for comparison, Climens has 30 and Coutet 18). The vines sit on the Clos Bonneau, an exceptional terroir where red earth dotted with pebbles rests on the Barsac plateau’s typical limestone base. Notably, the soils are relatively cool, imbuing Guffens’ wines with mineral steel and freshness to offset the late-picked fruit. Surrounded by Climens, Doisy-Védrines and Coutet, the clos is planted almost exclusively to Sémillon, complemented by Sauvignon Gris, Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc. It includes a generous four-hectare parcel of 100-year-old vines. 

Rather than use the morning mists, Guffens prefers harvesting under the first rays of the sun to obtain concentrated botrytis. His team harvests a meticulous selection of berries in six picks over ten days. The wine ages in 50% new oak for one year before going back to vats for 12 months to preserve the freshness and tension typical of the region’s great terroirs.

Composed of 98% Semillon and 2% Muscadelle, this is a Barsac of extraordinary aromatic intensity, concentration and energy. The nose has notes of jasmine, honey and saffron alongside roasted pineapple and peach. On the palate, expect a beautiful array of sweet citrus, honeyed peach and candied ginger, slowly tapering to a long finish that remains wonderfully refreshing despite its 138 g/L residual sugar.

The palate delivers fantastic poise and grace for such a rich vintage, offering loads of ginger, baking spices, and chalky nuances to accent the opulent citrus and tropical fruit layers, leading to a finish of amazing length on this beautiful wine.”

Les Dames de Bonneau is made only in years where Jean-Marie Guffens can work with the purest botrytis. Made from a draconian and meticulous selection harvested at the very beginning of November, the grapes were pressed in Guffen’s traditional vertical press and aged for 18 months in oak barrels. The result is one of the most intense and mesmerising Barsac/Sauternes wines of the vintage.

“Jean-Marie Guffens masterfully grasped the essence of this vintage. By delaying his harvest, he achieved an impressive concentration of his grapes while preserving their remarkable freshness and acidity. This approach allowed him to craft one of the standout vintage wines. The 2022 Les Dames de Bonneau reveals a deep, powerful and complex bouquet of apricots, quince, smoke, spices, spring flowers and ripe orchard fruits, followed by a dense, full-bodied, textural and layered palate, with a massive level of concentration, superb chalky dry extracts and an endless, ethereal and refined finish. While expressive and vibrant at this stage, it should be kept in the cellar for 5 to 6 years before it is opened, and it can age gracefully over the next 30 to 50 years. With 186 grams per liter of residual sugar, it is one of the best wines produced at this address.”
