Bachelet-Monnot 2024

Stunning Whites and Some of the Best-Value Red Burgundies on the Market
Bachelet-Monnot 2024

Brothers Marc and Alexandre Bachelet have delivered another superb set of wines with their 2024s. As most will know by now, the cool, wet, generally low-yielding 2024 season has delivered superb whites and juicy, seductive reds. The 2024s offered as good a tasting as we have had at this Domaine. The whites are magical, combining racy freshness, excellent ripeness, and loads of mineral energy, while the reds are perfumed, crunchy, and fabulous value. Everyone will be expecting great whites, but it is a genuinely outstanding year in both colours, the brilliant reds reminding me of 2017, and the whites of 2004 (although with a touch better balance).

It’s easy to be fooled by the Bachelet brothers' easy charm and laid-back air, but they are seriously focused, organic growers with standards of viticulture and winemaking that compare with Burgundy's elite producers. Their feverish attention to detail shines through in the wines below. Smart buyers will not miss the Bourgogne, Maranges and Santenay wines. They deliver crazy value in today’s market.

Bachelet-Monnot Bourgogne Blanc Côte d'Or 2024

This Bourgogne Blanc comes from some seriously impressive terroir, namely 1.3 hectares of 20- to 50-year-old vines in the Puligny area (spread across four parcels) and a plot of young-vine Chassagne on chalky soil. The excellent location of these vineyards, combined with the quality of the viticulture and confident, hands-off winemaking, has produced one of the best-value white Burgundies in our portfolio. Lovely fruit, juicy freshness and just the right twist of reduction.

“The 2024 Bourgogne Côte d'Or Blanc (two hectares in Puligny and one hectare in Chassagne) has a wonderful nose that is more Village or Premier Cru in complexity: mineral driven, beautifully defined and quite intense. The palate is very well balanced with green apple and freshly sliced pear, just a background note of praline then quite a spicy finish that lingers in the mouth. This punches well above its weight.”

Bachelet-Monnot Santenay Blanc 2024

The wine has been in the Bachelet-Monnot portfolio since 2012 and is drawn from four parcels of mature vines that average 30 years of age. The key terroir is the lieu-dit Les Bras, which is a continuation of the Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière. Le Chainey is in there as well. The soils of these vineyards are exceptionally chalky and deliver a gorgeous white with a lovely, creamy midpalate and long, rocky close.

“The 2024 Santenay Blanc comes from vines adjacent to La Fussière on limestone soils. This is very controlled on the nose, opening with orchard fruit and impressive flinty aromas, almost Puligny-like. The palate is bright on the entry with hints of white peach and fresh pear, a citric line of acidity and quite a potent spicy finish that lingers in the mouth. A step up from the previous vintage - excellent.”

“The vines are on the Maranges side, higher up, located in Le Chainey and Les Bras, with a new planting on stream from 2026 in the latter. Converted from reds that didn’t ripen easily. A little touch of the bacon fat reduction. Crystalline, fresh lemons on pure white fruit, not a heavyweight. Drink from 2027-2029.”

Bachelet-Monnot Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière Blanc 2024

La Fussière is the largest climat of Maranges (next to Santenay at the very south of the Côte de Beaune), covering an area of almost 35 hectares. It faces south towards the start of the Côte Chalonnaise, on a slope between 290 and 400 metres ASL. Alongside a cracking red from these marly limestone soils, Bachelet-Monnot has long crafted an exceptionally pure and taut white Burgundy from a small parcel of 40-year-old Chardonnay vines occupying the vineyard's highest reaches. This is a ridiculously refined and delicious wine for the appellation. Expect a white Burgundy of striking purity, with all kinds of citrussy fruit and a long, chalky close.

“Just the top of the plot was frosted, so in the end a respectable crop. Mid lemon, a little more fruit concentration, still with the reductive element. More fruit through the middle, deeper soils here compared to their Santenay holdings, adds weight and even a suggestion of tannin. Well constructed. Drink from 2028-2030.”

Bachelet-Monnot Chassagne-Montrachet 2024

This fleshy yet precise Chassagne is drawn from six well-sited parcels across the village: La Canière, Le Chêne, Les Benoîtes, Pot Bois, En Journoblot and Les Houillères. The parcels lie below the 1ers Crus except Pot Bois, which is one of Chassagne’s highest vineyards and sits above the Clos Saint-Jean. Les Houillères also deserves a callout, sitting, as it does, below Bâtard. The average age across these vines is 30 years. This is always outstanding, and the 2024 is a fleshy yet supremely elegant wine with love stonefruit generosity and lovely lick of powdery structure. Don’t hesitate.

“The 2024 Chassagne-Montrachet Village is a blend of seven lieux-dits with one-third from Morgeots, all touching Grand Crus. It has a touch of oyster shell on the nose that combines deftly with the citrus fruit. Fine delineation and focus. The palate is well balanced with a killer line of acidity, impressive depth and intensity, lightly spiced with a powerful and long finish that is unequivocally Premier Cru in standard. You will find few white Village Crus better than this.”

Bachelet-Monnot Meursault Clos du Cromin 2024

Bachelet-Monnot Meursault Clos du Cromin 2024

It was the Bachelet brothers’ grandfather who first planted this vineyard, and the vines he put in the ground are now over 90 years old! Clos du Cromin is located on the north side of the Meursault vineyards, near the border of Volnay. Surrounded by dry-stone walls and with a south/southeast exposure, the soil is deep and rich in red clay, although there is still a lot of rock at the bottom. It’s a powerful terroir—a sunny site that ripens early—and equally conducive to Chardonnay as it is to Pinot Noir. Marc and Alex Bachelet work with a small 0.21-hectare parcel of vines here—half of the vines are the original plantings (some of the oldest vines in Meursault), with the rest planted in 1998. A very classy, racy expression of Meursault and of this vineyard, this is so typical of everything I love about the whites from 2024: racy, tightly wound, yet packed with character.

“The 2024 Meursault Clos du Cromin has a Zen-like minimalist bouquet that is more Puligny in style, very nuanced and demands patience as you wait for it to open. The palate is linear and strict, very malic, never really building, staying controlled to the point where, like the 2023, I just find myself waiting for the final song that is never sung. A very competent Meursault that maybe has something up its sleeve for later.”

Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 2024

The domaine now works with 12 parcels in Puligny, many of which feature in this village cuvée. In the main, this wine comes from a handful of well-placed sites—Les Meix, Les Enseignères, Corvée des Vignes, Les Noyers Bret and Les Houillères—where the youngest vines are 25 years old and the average age is considerably higher. Like all the whites, this fermented spontaneously and was raised in 350-litre barrels. The 2024 is super impressive: deep and structured with lovely, lifted florals and citrus notes and a long, saline close. As good as Puligny villages get!

“The 2024 Puligny-Montrachet Village, a blend of four lieux-dits, has a brisk granitic nose that takes a few swirls to warm up. Just a little Chablis-like. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, now back into the Côte de Beaune stylistically with commendable weight towards the finish that lingers in the mouth. This will give a decade, possibly more, in terms of drinking pleasure.”
90-92 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“Mid lemon yellow. A distinguished but understated bouquet, partly spring flowers, partly fresh apple. There is power behind, with tension at the back of the palate, a light citrus wash to the orchard fruit, a feeling of treading on very small white stones, and a refined finish. Drink from 2028-2032.”

Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts 2024

This vineyard carries the local nickname Petit Bâtard on account of its similar clay-rich soils and the depth, quality and texture of the wines it routinely delivers—both of which are reminiscent of the nearby Grand Cru, Bâtard-Montrachet. The Bachelet brothers farm a 0.45-hectare parcel of 40-year-old vines near the top of the slope (next door to Sauzet’s) under the Les Combettes 1er Cru. The soils here are very stony, which brings generosity and flesh, but there’s no shortage of mineral charge and chewy extract. The 2024 is a salty, rocky wine of brilliant tension, depth and length, with a kiss of gentle bitterness to close. Superb.

“The 2024 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru has a very gifted, crushed stone/petrichor-tinged nose that has much more animation and energy than the previous vintage. The palate is taut and fresh, vibrant, stony and penetrating. So much energy is tied up in this Puligny but there is real persistence and power on the exquisitely defined finish. This is just an outstanding Les Referts among the best you will find in this vintage.”
93-95 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“Mid lemon yellow. Altogether more robust on the nose after the finesse of the village Puligny, with the full fruit on the cusp of white and yellow kept in check by a light reduction. A late malolactic here does not seem to have done any harm. The white fruit fleshes out at the back of the palate with a tingling citrus note into the bargain. Drink from 2030-2034.”

Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières 2024

The brothers work a low-yielding, 40-year-old parcel of vines in this highly regarded terroir, right next to those of Leflaive and just below the Truffière vineyard. The name Folatières is said to derive from folles-terres (crazy earth), perhaps due to the violent erosion that can occur on these slopes during heavy rain. The vineyard is literally a stone’s throw away from the Pucelles and Clavoillon 1ers Crus (bordering the latter). It also lies at the same altitude as Chevalier-Montrachet. So, it’s a very serious terroir. Bachelet-Monnot’s parcel—at around half a hectare—lies in the lower, eastern pocket of the vineyard, where the soil is very rocky. This parcel always produces tiny bunches of fruit with little juice, and Marc Bachelet notes that although the vines are “only” 40-something years old, the plants behave as if they are twice this age. The 2024 is a blinder, more open than the Referts, and more delicate. It’s very “Puligny”; all white flowers and lime pith, supremely elegant and very, very long.

“The 2024 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru is much more backward than the Les Referts at the moment. Crushed stone, a little more yellow fruit by comparison, a hint of orange blossom. It's alluringly standoffish! The palate is quite intense, focused and delineated. Not quite the amplitude or ambition of the Les Referts but it does fan out wonderfully on the finish, suggesting there is something there for those with the nous to leave it in the cellar for a few years.”
92-94 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“Far right end, higher up on the mother rock. A lifted bright lemon colour. Class on the nose, rather than evident weight. Stylish and ethereal, with a good acid-based backbone, dances to the back of the palate. Note the style from the location of the vineyard, a cooler plot within the large Folatières vineyard. Very long finish indeed for the vintage. Drink from 2030-2036.”

Bachelet-Monnot Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet 2024

Bachelet-Monnot’s Bâtard-Montrachet comes from a 0.14-hectare postage stamp of 50-year-old vines at the cooler, Puligny end of Bâtard (right at the top of the slope and immediately below Le Montrachet) and is planted to a density of 15,000 vines per hectare. Low yields are standard, with the density making pruning ‘short’ with two short four-bud ‘baguettes’. This is consistently one of the most mineral and refined examples of Bâtard we have tasted. Even in sunny vintages, the power of this famous site manifests as intensity and drive rather than fat. The notes below tell you all you need to know. Sadly, we have next to none.

“The 2024 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru was taken from barrel, of which there are three this year. This had a bit of reduction on the nose, though you can tell there is a lot of power coiled up in this Bâtard. The palate has a sublime balance, the oak beautifully integrated, pinpoint acidity with quite a spicy, almost peppery finish that lingers long in the mouth and doesn't disappear for over a minute. It just seems to gain majesty the more I keep going back to my glass and I am completely entranced. An exquisitely cut diamond.”
96-98 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“Glowing mid lemon in colour. A good supporting role from the oak, with some nicely ripe fruit but in no way over opulent. The body builds to the back, very little reduction here, a fair weight of white fruit flesh, with some juicy herbal notes as well. Very satisfying while staying discree..”

Bachelet-Monnot Bourgogne Rouge 2024

This bright and juicy Bourgogne was drawn from three parcels. One-third comes from a parcel of old-vine Pinot Fin in the Hautes-Côtes, another third from vines in Maranges (village level) and the remainder from a Bourgogne parcel on the edge of Puligny-Montrachet. The Puligny component brings perfume, the Maranges brings depth of fruit, and the Hautes-Côtes brings structure and high-toned perfume. The age of these sites is seriously impressive for a red of this level, with 60-, 70- and 80-year-old vines in the mix. This fermented spontaneously in concrete tanks with 20% whole bunch, then went to barrel for one year in wood and six months in tank. It's a beautiful expression of Côte de Beaune in a cool year: immensely perfumed, lifted, red fruited and vibrantly fresh.

“The 2024 Bourgogne Rouge comes from Puligny, the Hautes-Côtes and declassified vines around Maranges. It has a very pretty redcurrant and strawberry-scented bouquet. The palate has quite sharp acidity, quite peppery as if there were stems in the blend, with a little bitterness on the finish. Fine.”
85-87 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“Mid purple, decent colour, some lively red fruit of moderate intensity, the floral side of raspberry. Then properly fresh with acidity which rasps a little at the moment but which should integrate. Some cherries too. Drink from 2027-2029.”

Bachelet-Monnot Maranges Vieilles Vignes Rouge 2024

This charismatic old-vine cuvée is drawn from two plots: Le Chamery in Cheilly-lès-Maranges and Le Clos in Sampigny-lès-Maranges. The mass-selection vines are over 50 years old, and the soils tend towards red clay, shot through with rocky chalk. Alexandre Bachelet notes that these terroirs are reasonably warm, and he sometimes uses some percentage of bunches to balance the depth of fruit.  This wasn’t necessary in 2024 as the fruit was so racy anyway. Again, this is bright and red fruited but with more inky depths.  Terrific value now, this will be even better with a few years in bottle. Super value.

“The 2024 Maranges Vieilles Vignes comes from 40 to 50-year-old vines with a sprinkling of stems. This has a classy nose with blackcurrant, raspberry and briary scents, fine delineation with hints of bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy tannins, fine acidity and just a pinch of cracked black pepper with a beautifully controlled finish. Classic in style, very delicious and doubtless great value-for-money.”
90-92 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“Made from three selected plots, while others go into the Bourgogne. A little darker crimson, with a bouquet that reflects the Bourgogne Rouge but with greater density. The additional fruit intensity covers the acidity satisfactorily, with a peppery note to finish. Crunchy cherry skins in with the raspberry. Drink from 2028-2030.”

Bachelet-Monnot Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière Rouge 2024

La Fussière is the largest climat of Maranges (at the very south of the Côte de Beaune, next to Santenay). It faces south towards the start of the Côte Chalonnaise, on a slope at an altitude between 290 and 400 metres. With the addition of a new parcel in 2020, the Bachelet vines cover three hectares with an average age of 60 years. This cuvée comprises 11 parcels. The Bachelet aim has always been to craft finer, more aromatic reds from the Côte’s southern reaches, and this limestone-rich site has helped further this aim. As Jasper Morris has written about this wine: “If you don’t know or don’t rate Maranges, this wine is the wake-up call.” This is another gorgeous release: fleshy yet mineral, long and complex. As the scores below make clear, in today’s Burgundy, this 1er Cru represents quite brilliant value!

“The 2024 Maranges La Fussières 1er Cru Rouge, which comes from limestone soils, has a charming floral nose that is very pure, with scents of crushed strawberry and tayberry, more fruit-forward compared to the Vieilles Vignes. The palate is framed by pliant tannins and quite a vibrant line of acidity that keeps this on its toes. The mineral core is more apparent towards the finish as it lingers tenderly in the mouth. This is a benchmark Maranges that sets the standard for others to follow.”
92-94 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“The domaine has 4.5ha across eleven plots, made separately and blended at the end of the first year. A glowing ruby purple. More floral in style than the growlier Clos Roussot, yet with an impressive density and tension in the vibrant red fruit, plenty still in reserve here, a strong mineral finish. Drink from 2028-2032.”

Bachelet-Monnot Maranges 1er Cru Clos de la Boutière 2024

Again, this is a stunning value. Bachelet-Monnot owns half of this clos. Boutière may well derive from old French for ‘end of the field’, which fits, considering this vineyard sits on the border of Santenay at the very end of the Clos Roussots vineyard. Clos de la Boutière has more clay, which can be felt in the added richness of the wine. It comes from a single parcel of 90-year-old, mass-selection vines that deliver ripeness and power. All the fruit was destemmed this vintage and no new oak was used. Seductive yet very complex and mineral, it’s another next-level Maranges and a crazy bargain for 1er Cru Burgundy. Incredible class.

“The 2024 Maranges Clos de la Boutière 1er Cru comes from a parcel of 90+ year-old vines from a very old massale selection. This has an open, airy bouquet of shimmering red fruit, plenty of vigour and perhaps the one cuvée that is a little Côte de Nuits in style. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. Finely structured, a "cool" Maranges that perhaps just needs a tad more complexity to manifest on the finish. But still, this is a classy Maranges that should give over a decade of drinking pleasure like La Fussière.”
91-93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“One of the lowest yields at 15 hl/ha. Slightly the deepest purple of the reds, though the bouquet is less immediately expressive than Fussière. Cherry kernels, a mix of red and black, more tannins from the clay in the soil. A solid wine with excellent ageing potential. Drink from 2029-2034.”
88-91 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Bachelet-Monnot Maranges 1er Cru Les Clos Roussots 2024

This is the Bachelets’ second release from this highly regarded 1er Cru, which is a continuation of Santenay’s Clos Rousseau (Russots is an alternate spelling pronounced in the same way). The family has owned vines here for decades, though the parcel was too small to vinify separately; this fruit was previously blended into the village wines. Since 2022, they have had a fermage (rental) agreement in place, taking the total surface of vines they farm to just over half a hectare, so a single cuvée is possible. The vineyard has a band of hard limestone under brown marl soils. The 2024 is wildly perfumed with a pulpy, seductive palate. Red fruited yet generous it is, yet again, a crazy good wine for the appellation and another bargain. All these reds are fabulous blind option wines, but this one particularly as you get to ask, “Is this Rousseau or not?”

“The 2024 Maranges Clos Rousseau 1er Cru comes from deep clayey soils. Raspberry, wild strawberry and wild hedgerow intermingle on the nose, well defined though perhaps without the vibrancy of the La Fussières. The palate is taut and linear, a bit more backbone at the back end of this Maranges suggesting that it will benefit from a couple of years in bottle. Very promising.”
91-93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“One young vine plot and one old vine, Marc likes the blend. A rich concentrated purple. The bouquet is a little quieter than the Maranges, but clearly has plenty in reserve. Because this wine can be tannic, they decided to go short in cuvaison, just 7-8 days. The balance has worked very well here with a fluidity of red berry fruit extending the finish beyond the tannins which are relatively refined. Drink from 2028-2032.”
89-91 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Bachelet-Monnot Santenay Les Charmes Dessus 2024

Les Charmes Dessus is a site just under the Clos Rousseau 1er Cru on the southeastern slopes of Santenay. While it’s reasonably close to Clos de la Boutière, the terroir is markedly different. Here, the red clay and rocky limestone soils produce aromatic, racy reds of great finesse and freshness. To put it another way, this vineyard is often referred to as a ‘white terroir’, and Marc Bachelet tells us this site always delivers the best acidity in the reds, regardless of the year. From half a hectare of 50-year-old vines,  the 2024 was lifted, tightly wound, spicy and very long with elegant, powdery tannins.

“More purple than ruby, with a seductive softly ripe raspberry fruit on the nose. The fruit dances on the palate with a light pepperiness and some strawberry notes, one could imagine whole bunch. Really sensual on the palate yet with a fine thread of acidity. Really lovely. Chapeau! Drink from 2027-2032.”

Bachelet-Monnot Pommard 2024

This is our third allocation from the brothers’ Pommard vines which are located mostly in Chanlins, a village lieu-dit that lies just above the Premier Cru of the same name, on the Volnay border. The 0.25-hectare parcel of 40-year-old vines comes from Alex and Marc Bachelet’s father, who sold the fruit to négociants until 2011. At 400 metres, it’s one of the highest and steepest vineyards of the Côte de Beaune, which, along with the stony, chalk-rich soils, results in a very pretty ‘Volnay-like’ expression of Pommard. There is also a quarter from La Vache, a well-sited vineyard that lies above Les Rugiens-Hautes, which brings the depth.

“The 2024 Pommard Village comes from two lieux-dits on the slope. It has a lifted nose of raspberry and blackberry fruit, with just a pinch of brown spices. Fine definition considering that this is a village cru. The palate is very well balanced, elegant and poised, with a fine backbone of tannins, almost flinty in style but just needs a touch more persistence. An assured Pommard that brims with freshness, one to drink over the next 8-10 years.”
