This is the Bachelets’ second release from this highly regarded 1er Cru, which is a continuation of Santenay’s Clos Rousseau (Russots is an alternate spelling pronounced in the same way). The family has owned vines here for decades, though the parcel was too small to vinify separately; this fruit was previously blended into the village wines. Since 2022, they have had a fermage (rental) agreement in place, taking the total surface of vines they farm to just over half a hectare, so a single cuvée is possible. The vineyard has a band of hard limestone under brown marl soils. The 2024 is wildly perfumed with a pulpy, seductive palate. Red fruited yet generous it is, yet again, a crazy good wine for the appellation and another bargain. All these reds are fabulous blind option wines, but this one particularly as you get to ask, “Is this Rousseau or not?”

Reviews

“The 2024 Maranges Clos Rousseau 1er Cru comes from deep clayey soils. Raspberry, wild strawberry and wild hedgerow intermingle on the nose, well defined though perhaps without the vibrancy of the La Fussières. The palate is taut and linear, a bit more backbone at the back end of this Maranges suggesting that it will benefit from a couple of years in bottle. Very promising.”
91-93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“One young vine plot and one old vine, Marc likes the blend. A rich concentrated purple. The bouquet is a little quieter than the Maranges, but clearly has plenty in reserve. Because this wine can be tannic, they decided to go short in cuvaison, just 7-8 days. The balance has worked very well here with a fluidity of red berry fruit extending the finish beyond the tannins which are relatively refined. Drink from 2028-2032.”
89-91 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
“Bright medium ruby. Quite sweet red fruits with bright, fresh acidity. Lots of energy and life. Quite salty on the palate. Tannins build on the finish. This has great minerality and is very good.”
