Commune of Buttons

A Thoughtful Evolution Continues
Commune of Buttons

Jasper Button has quietly become one of the Adelaide Hills' most compelling voices. A small batch of Chardonnay in 2012 set things in motion, and it has been a steady, focused progression ever since. Vintages in Beaujolais, Jura, Piemonte and Burgundy shaped his philosophy. Process is only a means to an end, and that end is deliciousness. Jasper says he has always been drawn to wines that are free, expressive, and immediately appealing, and his own wines fit that description perfectly.

He takes pride in the fact that Commune of Buttons remains a small, artisanal grower-producer. He attributes his ability to achieve increasingly higher quality each vintage to his close connection to the vineyards, where he is committed to learning the nuances of each season to coax the best quality he can out of the vines. Everything at Commune of Buttons is done in-house, from careful low-yielding organic viticulture to gravity bottling on-site with sulphur kept to an absolute minimum, and that close connection to the land shows in the glass. The resulting wines are precise, energetic, and layered with fine-boned complexity that rewards attention without demanding it.

It's been exciting to watch the thoughtful evolution of Commune of Buttons. The wines have never been better. Although we have recently sold out of the 2025 Estate Pinot Noir and single-vineyard Gloria Pinot Noir, we have limited remaining stock of the wines below. Commune of Buttons Estate Chardonnay 2024

Sourced from north- and east-facing parcels across the ABC and Clover vineyards (1.5ha), this Chardonnay was hand harvested and whole-bunch pressed before fermenting in 600L French demi-muids. A long élevage, 12 months in barrel followed by extended time on lees in tank, has delivered concentration and focus without heaviness.

From the Merrow Bank Vineyard, a cool, south-facing 0.7-hectare site sitting at 550m elevation with soils of white and yellow clay over sandstone. The vineyard doesn't get as much sun and therefore ripens a few weeks later than the home vineyard. The fruit is barrel fermented and aged on full lees with no stirring before extended time in tank. This is Chardonnay that balances generosity with precision. It's refreshing, delicious, and moreish.

Commune of Buttons Nebbiolo Rosato 2024

The 2024 Commune of Buttons Nebbiolo Rosato comes from a tiny 0.2-hectare planting in the Clover Vineyard, with only 1,600 bottles produced. Harvested early in April to preserve brightness and lift, the fruit was chilled overnight, destemmed, and given six days of skin contact before fermentation. It was then pressed to stainless steel to finish ferment, followed by 18 months’ maturation on fine lees. Bottled without sulphur additions, the result is a precise, energetic rosato. Tight and driven by acidity, it shows Nebbiolo’s signature red berry tones with a subtle tannin grip from its brief time on skins. Focused, lively, and finely structured, it finishes long and clean. Simply delicious!

Commune of Buttons Cabernet Franc 2025

The 2025 Commune of Buttons Cabernet Franc marks the first harvest from vines planted in 2018, with this tiny initial parcel yielding just a single barrel of wine. Sourced from a small section of the Gloria Block slope—currently home to only five rows of Cabernet Franc—it reflects both its youthful vines and distinct site. Ripening was slow yet even and generous, producing fruit with a pure, unforced character while retaining the lightness and detail typical of its early vine age. Vinified with a ferment on skins and matured on full lees in tank, the approach favours clarity and expression over weight or external influence. The result is a wine defined by red and darker berry tones, subtle pyrazine lift, and a faint savoury, almost animalistic edge. It sits in a restrained register, offering depth without heaviness and a finely tuned sense of proportion. The palate moves with energy and ease, showing fine, pliant tannins and a supple, flowing texture. Flavours unfold gradually, carried by fresh drive and quiet intensity, leading to a long, composed finish.

Commune of Buttons Sable Syrah Grenache 2024

This 40% Grenache, 60% Syrah blend comes from a single vineyard site in Blewitt Springs. The vines are 60 to 80 year old vines and sit on deep, sandy soils. The fruit was hand harvested, sorted and destemmed, keeping 10% whole bunches. Maceration took place over three weeks before 18 months' maturation in large old foudre. It has more depth and more refined tannins than the 2023 vintage thanks to the warmer conditions in 2024 permitting better ripeness in the skins and stems. According to Jasper Button, "Gentle extraction has made for a light frame and structure, there is a plum and violet core, the tannins are fine from the sandy soils, and there is a refreshing lift with the long line of natural acidity."
