“Stellar Wines”:  The Limited Release 2023 Botanicals
Pyramid Valley Botanicals

The combination of exceptional terroir, a marginal climate and progressive vineyard management—not to mention quietly understated winemaking—produces mesmerising wines. That is exactly what Pyramid Valley is delivering. Since Huw Kinch and his team took the reins of this extraordinary Estate, they have barely put a foot wrong. It’s no exaggeration to say that this vineyard, nestled in the rocky limestone escarpments of Waikari, North Canterbury, is producing some of the most exciting Chardonnay and Pinot Noir outside the Côte-d’Or.

But Pyramid Valley has always prized individuality over one-upmanship—as it should with terroir-driven wine. In Kinch’s words, “I don’t think you can make wines like these from any other site in the world. They are so unique. Whether you like them or not comes down to personal taste. That’s what makes great wine so captivating—it cannot be replicated.

It’s a great year, but we had to struggle for it,” Kinch added. In 2023, Waikari yields plunged to a wincingly low 11 hl/ha—the sort of figure that makes accountants reach for the whisky. Rational producers might call it a disaster; yet those tiny yields proved a blessing. Reduced crop loads allowed the remaining fruit to ripen perfectly: the 2023s show greater fruit intensity than 2022, plus more perfume, tension and radiant structure—all at very moderate alcohols.

As soil expert Pedro Parra once quipped, “Limestone is the best party in the wine world.” If so, welcome to the best event in town. The Chardonnays are vividly pure and electric; the Pinots possess focused, gorgeous flavours carried on a fine, chalky undertow. Whatever the grape, these wines feel alive in the glass, their authenticity and length of flavour hardwired into the DNA of the world’s greatest vineyards and their growers.

The 2023s are sealed with Diam Origine 10 and a wax cap. For more on the vintage and winemaking (and some spiffy maps and pictures), please see Pyramid’s detailed release notes.

The Wines

Pyramid Valley Lion's Tooth Chardonnay 2023

Pyramid Valley Lion's Tooth Chardonnay 2023

Biodynamic. This site takes its name from the vineyard’s abundance of dandelions (dent-de-lion—‘lion’s tooth’—in French). The original 0.4 hectares of vines were planted in 2000 at a density of 11,111 vines per hectare, with a further 2.8 hectares planted between 2018 and 2020, though most of the fruit for this wine (89%) comes from the 2000 plantings. The biodynamically farmed Lion’s Tooth is a steeply inclined, east-facing site on soils with a “nut and crumb structure and great mineral fertility.” It’s the classic limestone and clay of the area but with a higher balance of clay (30%) than Field of Fire.

Picked at a wincingly low 12.5 hl/ha, there are riveting aromas of flint, toast, mandarin peel and orange blossoms. Concentrated, focused flavours envelop the palate with bursts of acidity and the phenolic breadth this site always delivers. It finishes with turbo-charged zeal and impeccable length. Pyramid only made 126 six-packs in 2023. It’s a shame that so few will get to taste this enthralling Chardonnay.

"An expressive and round chardonnay with aromas of vanilla, roasted hazelnuts and fresh butter. Layered and generous without being heavy, it displays mouth-filling richness with immediate complexity. The palate is flavoursome, tangy and long, showing superb depth alongside very fresh acidity. Though long and concentrated, it remains light and saline, elegant and racy on its feet. There's beautiful precision and clarity throughout, finishing with lime cordial notes. Light-bodied yet intense and perfumed."
96 points, Stephen Wong, The Real Review
“When compared to the estate's Field of Fire chardonnay, the Lion's Tooth shows a deeper colour and increased aromatic concentration. Characters of peach, mandarin, peach and citrus fruits with notes of sourdough starter, spiced oatmeal, meadow flowers, just a wisp of flint, a murmur of hazelnut and crushed stone. Clarity gains momentum on the palate, the wine coiling and gaining tension while retaining an expansive depth that's whisked along by a brisk limestone mineral cadence. Chalky, textural grip on the finish with plenty of sustain.”

Pyramid Valley Field of Fire Chardonnay 2023

Pyramid Valley Field of Fire Chardonnay 2023

Biodynamic. Field of Fire takes its name from the type of grass that grows among the vines in this gently sloped, southeast-facing, clay-limestone plot. It’s nestled in the northeast corner of the property, sheltered by a belt of trees and a range of hills behind it. The original 0.3 hectares were planted in 2000 at a density of 11,111 vines per hectare. Plantings expanded by a further 1.2 hectares between 2018 and 2020, though only the original 2000 plantings and 0.3 hectares from 2018 go into this wine. The Field of Fire plot has a cooler, rockier profile than Lion’s Tooth, and though soils vary throughout, there is a prevalence of shallow (10-15cm) glauconitic clays over the well-drained limestone bedrock. In comparison, Field of Fire typically shows a tighter mineral core and athletic structure cloaked by layered, complex flavour.

“Frosts meant that there was only a single barrel of the FoF Chardonnay in '23. It's a finely aromatic wine. Taut with lemon, pear and apple fruits cut with oatmeal, struck flint, clover blossom, chalk and grilled hazelnuts. Chalky vibes abound. There's a light phenolic twist of texture and a vivid sapidity and focused carry on the palate, with a citrus-peel expression right on the exit and a slow ache of umami. Chablis-esque, almost.”
95 points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion
"This is tight and precise, revealing hints of flint, floral notes, wet stone, hay, green olive salinity and savouriness. Distinctly vertical in structure, and defined by blocky minerality, this is less giving than some. The tautness and salinity envelops the concentrated, late flavours of spice in a restrained, light-bodied package. Really long on the finish, though currently a bit chewy, this needs quite a bit of time to come out of its shell."

Pyramid Valley Earth Smoke Pinot Noir 2023

Pyramid Valley Earth Smoke Pinot Noir 2023

Biodynamic. Like the Chardonnay vineyards, Pyramid Valley’s Waikari Pinot Noir sites were planted in 2000 at 11,111 vines per hectare on slopes with clay/limestone soils. Earth Smoke is an expansive slope that faces east and is situated southwest of Lion’s Tooth and north of its sibling Pinot Noir site, Angel Flower. The soils are richer than Angel Flower, described by Steve Smith as “strong and beautifully structured” with a high proportion of clay (30%) over the limestone bedrock. The name comes from the nickname given to fumitory, a plant from the poppy family that thrives in this 0.85-hectare plot. Although both wines share DNA, the later-picked Earth Smoke is typically the more structured and darker of the two, with more fruit weight and savoury undertones to accompany its tender, fine tannins.

“A wonderfully expressive release of the Earth Smoke with poised red and dark cherry and wild strawberry fruits with hints of mountain wildflowers, crushed herbs, porcini, sous bois, souk-like spice and earth. Complex and layered with perhaps a little more chew to the tannin profile than the Angel Flower. Flavours unfurl on the palate, stretching out long and true, with the chalky, sapid acidity showing boundless energy and verve. A beautiful, graceful and soulful expression of North Canterbury pinot noir.”
96 points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion
“In other circumstances this wine would command every inch on this page to sing its praises. It’s among the best pinots I’ve tasted all year. A harvest diminished by frost has delivered great complexity, if not quantity. Sour cherries, wild berries and dried porcini, tightening through a fine, granular finish dusted with exotic spice.”
97 points, Nick Ryan, The Australian Weekend Magazine
"Light ruby. This is a quietly pretty and understated pinot noir which slowly opens on the palate with air. Sneakily concentrated and compact flavours of raspberry, strawberry, Irish Moss and star anise melt into a coulis of surprising sweetness, obscuring the delicate, chalky tannins which only reveal themselves on the finish. Cedar, sandalwood and almond cream accompany sweet, earthy notes of Jerusalem artichoke and sesame seeds on the expanding, flowing finish. Lighter in style but very long, this is approachable immediately but will deliver more layered complexity over the coming decade."

Pyramid Valley Earth Smoke Pinot Noir 2023
Pyramid Valley Angel Flower Pinot Noir 2023

Pyramid Valley Angel Flower Pinot Noir 2023

Biodynamic. Angel Flower is the prettiest of many synonyms for yarrow, a grassland and pasture plant with delicate, fennel-like leaves and a brilliant mass of white flowers. Yarrow is the basis of the biodynamic preparation 502 and is strongly associated with mobilising natural sulphur and potassium in the soil.

Planted in 2000 at 11,111 vines per hectare, the 0.7-hectare Angel Flower plot is a cooler, more exposed Pinot block on the Pyramid Valley property. It’s a stunning, steeply sloped, north-facing vineyard located at the Estate’s southern tip. The soils are shallow and coarse with less clay (15%) than Earth Smoke, which Huw Kinch says enhances the wine’s aromatic profile. By comparison, you can expect similar weight and shape to Earth Smoke, with heightened floral aromatics and a silky slip through the palate.

“I like this very much. There's a fine aromatic profile, with clarity and lift to spare, but there's a depth and resonance to the fruit that is instantly appealing. Fine red berry and cherry fruits with a skein of exotic spice, wildflowers, rhubarb, pomegranate, mountain herbs and crushed stone. Plenty of calcareous energy on the palate, with a great cadence and tension between fruit and acidity. The flow of fruit is pure and elegant, with superfine, chalky tannins, the finish linear and focused with a long draw of flavour and sleek, ripe fruit.”
96 points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion
"Light ruby. Delicate and light-bodied, this ethereal pinot noir is all flowers and minerality: the rosehip, hibiscus, rhubarb and cascara flavours being trimmed in flint, wet stone and powder-fine, chalky tannins. Elegant and detailed, but just a bit fragile on the finish for greatness, this contemplative wine needs more delicately flavoured fare at the table but will deliver finesse across its entire drinking window."

Pyramid Valley Snake's Tongue Pinot Noir 2023

Pyramid Valley Snake's Tongue Pinot Noir 2023

This is the third release of Pyramid Valley’s Snake’s Tongue Pinot Noir from the Estate’s impressive Mānatu vineyard, located in the Lowburn sub-region of Central Otago. Planted in the mid-2000s by Jean and Roger Gibson, the former Lowburn Ferry property sits on a gentle, north-facing slope in the foothills of the Pisa Ranges. A key trait of the site is its soils: loess over deep silts with pedogenic lime deposits. With high pH and suitability for growing world-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, these soils proved the main drawcard for winemaker Huw Kinch, viticulturist Nick Paulin and owner Steve Smith, MW.

The 10.2-hectare property is home to a patchwork of Pinot Noir clones—Abel, 667, 777, 114, 115, 943, 828, and clone 5—playing into Kinch’s preference for clonal mix in the vineyard and the winery. The Snake’s Tongue block is a 1.9-hectare plot in the southeast corner of the vineyard, with this release drawn from a 0.7-hectare parcel of Abel clone planted in 2007. (The remaining 1.2 hectares comprises new high-density vines—clones 828, 943 and 115—planted in 2018 and 2019.)

In contrast to the Pinot fruit from the cooler Waikari property (Earth Smoke and Angel Flower), Mānatu’s Pinot Noir sees more sunshine and gives a wine of immediate pleasure. Focussed on textured and juicy five spice, spiced plums and cherries, it has a core of power and intensity not found in the more restrained northern fruit. Kinch uses whole bunches (25%) and a measure of new oak in the Mānatu wines (30%) to harness this inherent power, techniques he tells us would overpower the Waikari wines. It is yet another example of his thoughtful, site-based approach.

“Pinot noir from the Lowburn subregion in Central Otago. 25% whole bunches in the mix in the '23 release and there's a lovely exotic lift and textural component on display in the wine as a result. Dark cherry and berry fruits with hints of crushed stone, mountain herbs, medina spice, raspberry pip, wildflowers and earth. There's a long, pure stretch of fruit on the palate, fine, powdered-schist tannins and a fine mineral cadence as the wine travels. Winemaker Huw Kinch says, 'the idea with the whole bunch was to tame the sunlight in the wine a little' ... nailed it. The balance is just right.”
