Champagne Agrapart & Fils

The New (Stellar) Terroirs and 7 Crus
Champagne Agrapart & Fils

The apple never falls far from the tree. Today, Ambroise Agrapart, son of Nathalie and Pascal, is at the helm with the active support of his father. Ambroise has achieved the highest level of education in his field and is a qualified oenologist. In the mould of his father, he is very much a grower yet has a technical prowess that is all his own. Even Pascal makes it clear that Ambroise has brought an even greater level of precision and organisation to the Estate’s practice and wines.

It is safe to say the future of Champagne Agrapart is in good hands. Pascal Agrapart has laid down such rock-solid foundations that we don’t expect any radical changes, and when it comes to this Domaine’s work in the vineyards, Ambroise is certainly his father’s son. Having worked alongside his father—and grandfather—for many years, the younger Agrapart appreciates the benefits of making wine in the dry and sunny conditions that characterise Champagne’s recent vintages.

He trusts the ability of his old vine terroirs to tap freshness and minerality even in a generous vintage. Ambroise also finds that the style of these ‘solar years’ melds beautifully with the minerality and mouth-watering structure gifted by his rocky vineyards and his family’s winemaking ethos. “Of course, climate change has slightly changed how we do things,” says Ambroise, who worked with Etienne de Montille in Burgundy before returning home, “even so, I think today, in Champagne, it is easier to make great wine than in the past.”

Agrapart’s new disgorgements are emblematic of the radiance, chalky intensity, and crystalline precision we expect from one of the true reference points for Côte des Blancs Chardonnay. They are also staggeringly delicious. Ambroise and Pascal believe the current Terroirs bottling is one of the finest they have made. It’s a big call, but who better to make it? Punctuating the more powerful years, the cool 2021 vintage has provided a palette of lightness, bringing tension and a clap of chalky lightning to the current release.

The Wines

Champagne Agrapart & Fils 7 Crus NV (Base 22. Disg. Mar 25)

Champagne Agrapart & Fils 7 Crus NV (Base 22. Disg. Mar 25)

Disg. March 2025. The Agrapart range begins with a non-vintage wine called 7 Crus. The name refers to the seven villages from which the wine derives. These include Avize (from younger vines aged 20 to 40 years), Cramant, Oger, Oiry, Avenay-Val-d’Or, Coligny and Vauciennes. Like all Agrapart wines, the fruit is from 100% estate-owned and farmed vineyards.

7 Crus is a blend of two harvests. In this case, 50% is 2022 from 1er Cru sites, and 50% is 2021 from Grand Cru sites. The reserve wine was raised in neutral, 600-litre oak casks from François Chidaine and Didier Dagueneau. The breakdown is 90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir (this and the Complantée are the only wines from this producer that aren’t blanc de blancs). Even at this first level, the wine is aged for three years on lees, and it was disgorged with 6 g/L dosage. This is the most immediately seductive cuvée in the Agrapart range, yet it is still extremely fine: long, racy and saline with some gentle grip. And as the note below makes clear, it’s become ever classier in recent years under Ambroise Agrapart’s tutelage. Sadly, we do not get nearly enough. With a further four months in bottle, this is the new disgorgement of the same wine we offered in July this year.

"The NV Brut 7 Crus, based on the 2022 vintage (50%) and complemented by reserve wines from 2021, blends the juices from the end pressing of all villages of the estate and includes 10% Pinot Noir from Avenay-val-d'Or. Disgorged in October 2024 with with a dosage of five grams per liter, it’s a wine with more an immediate personality, offering up aromas of peach, pear and bread dough. Ample and textural, it’s underpinned by succulent yet vibrant acidity."

Champagne Agrapart & Fils 7 Crus NV (Base 22. Disg. Mar 25)
Champagne Agrapart & Fils Grand Cru Terroirs Blanc de Blancs NV (Base 21. Disg. Mar 25)

Champagne Agrapart & Fils Grand Cru Terroirs Blanc de Blancs NV (Base 21. Disg. Mar 25)

Agrapart’s scintillating Terroirs is 100% Grand Cru, with the fruit sourced only from great sites across four revered villages in the Côte des Blancs: Avize, Cramant, Oger and Oiry. Together with the terroir, vine age is a key quality factor, with the average age of the plantings at more than 50 years.

This release is based on three outstanding vintages: 2021, 2020 and 2019. The reserve wine (the earlier vintage) makes up a remarkable 70% of the cuvée—another telling factor in its quality. After natural fermentation, half the wine matured in large-format, neutral oak and spent over 36 months on lees. Dosage is limited to 3 g/L, and disgorgement was carried out by hand in March 2025.

This is another flat-out stunning disgorgement of this wine. Although the 7 Crus is terrific, this is, as always, another level altogether. The quality of the Grand Cru sites, the age of vines, the vintages involved, and the dominance of reserve wines in the blend all play their role in this difference. Regardless, it’s evidence of a stellar grower in perpetual movement. The wine is already wonderful but will, as always, benefit from another year under cork.

"The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Terroirs is an excellent introduction to the estate’s Chardonnays. Heavily based on Oger (around 40% of the blend), with the remainder coming from Oiry, Cramant and Avize, it’s already expressive, offering aromas of honeysuckle, nectarine, bread and fresh hazelnut. Medium to full-bodied with bright acidity and complemented by a pillowy mousse, it concludes with a long, sapid finish."
