And God Created Riesling (Again)—The Spellbinding 2024 Vintage
Robert Weil 2024

The esteemed Wilhelm Weil has been quietly setting the standard for Rheingau Riesling for some four decades now, and recent vintages haven't missed a beat. The 2024s have now landed, and it's a vintage worthy of every serious wine buyer's attention!

German wine lovers will already be across the fact that 2024 is a fabulous, classical Riesling vintage, so we all should know what to expect from Weingut Robert Weil. The dry wines have fabulous depth of fruit, excellent, balanced acidity, and solid phenolic grip. As for the sweet wines, low levels of botrytis meant that only tiny quantities of stunningly concentrated Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese were produced, while the Spätlese and Auslese wines, always exceptional, are even purer and more precise than normal. In short, it's a vintage to celebrate and fill your boots.

Robert Weil Rheingau Riesling Trocken 2024 (375ml)

The entry-level Trocken is a blend from Weil’s high-altitude sites dotted around the village of Kiedrich. These vineyards include the brilliantly named Sandgrub vineyard and a good dollop from Wasseros, a steep, southwest-facing vineyard that abuts the Gräfenberg vines. Then, there is a smaller addition from elevated sites in Hallgarten. The soils of these sites are typically composed of stony, fragmented phyllite interlaced with loess and loam. At this level, the wine is vinified in stainless steel with roughly 5% fermented in large oak. Just outstanding for the level.

“The 2024 Rheingau Riesling Trocken is clear, refined and coolish on the elegant nose, with grassy and flinty notes as well as white fruit aromas and just an idea of yellow stone fruits. Vinified predominantly in stainless steel (95%), the wine is round and tastes almost off-dry on the palate, which makes it very pleasant and digestible already at this early stage. This is a delicious, frisky Riesling for many occasions. 12% stated alcohol.”
90 points, Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate
“The 2024 Riesling Rheingau is from Kiedrich and Hallgarten. A small portion, 5%, was made in large, neutral wood, with the rest in stainless steel. Green apple sprays from the glass, accompanied by a vivid zestiness. The palate is gorgeously tart, brisk, slender, refreshing and crystalline. If you want freshness, here it is. (Bone-dry)”

Robert Weil Kiedricher Riesling Trocken 2024

Weil’s village Riesling is a blend of first-picked parcels from the classified hillside estate sites of Klosterberg, Turmberg and Gräfenberg, as well as a measure of Wasseros fruit. As you would expect from such terroir, it is a step up from the entry wine, with more texture and power and considerably rockier mineral intensity. Accordingly, one-third of the wine is raised in large Stockinger Doppelstückfass (wooden cask) for six months.

“Vinified in stainless steel (two-thirds) and large oak casks (one-third) the 2024 Kiedricher Riesling Trocken is from later-harvested grapes in higher altitudes and rockier soils, even Erste and Grosse Lage sites. The wine is still a little bit reductive on the nose and opens deep, intense and flinty, with notes of crushed stones. On the palate, this is a round, refined and elegant, really pristine and mouth-filling yet light and finessed Riesling with a long, saline and finely grippy finish. This is an excellent, energetic and playful entry into the crus from Robert Weil. 12% stated alcohol.”
92 points, Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate
“The 2024 Riesling Kiedricher is, as always, from the younger vines of Turmberg, Klosterberg, Gräfenberg and Wasseros from just underneath the forest. This was partially made in large, neutral wood, with 70% of the wine in stainless steel. It opens with a heightened, citric allure, accompanied by a touch of angelica. The slender palate has a gorgeous crunch. This is so elegant and refreshing. (Bone-dry)”

Robert Weil Kiedrich Klosterberg Riesling Trocken 2024

The vines on this steep, four-hectare vineyard are between 40 and 60 years old. At up to 300 metres, this is the highest of Weil’s three hillside sites, yet thanks to its southern aspect and deeper, iron-rich, weathered slate soils, it also produces the most opulent and seductive of these wines (when young). The Weil team often use the term ‘baroque’ when describing wines from Klosterberg in reference to the lift and generosity. While the Klosterberg shares some similarities in character with the Kiedricher wine, you always get a kick up in intensity, complexity and drive at the finish.

“The 2024 Kiedrich Klosterberg Riesling Trocken is based on grapes that were macerated for four and 12 hours. Vinified in large oak casks (mainly doppelstücks), kept on the full lees until June and bottled in July, the 2024 opens with a still discreet but characterful nose with coolish notes of lemon fruits, lime rind and stone dust. Dense, rich and round but still light and playful, with a fine tannin grip and lingering salinity, this is a zesty, savory and very elegant Klosterberg with a dense, tasty, saline finish. Still with baby fat, I recommend aging this Riesling for at least four years. 12.5% stated alcohol.”

Robert Weil Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken 2024

Similarly to Klosterberg, the Turmberg vines sit in the 30- to 50-year-old range. The name Turmberg—or ‘tower hill’—derives from the ruins of the last surviving tower of the former castle, Burg Scharfenstein (12th century), positioned dramatically atop the vineyard. The infamous German wine law of 1971 made this site part of the neighbouring Gräfenberg. In 2005, Weil succeeded in having this 3.8-hectare monopole reinstated as an individual classified site in the vineyard register (historically, it had been a separate vineyard, reflecting the unique terroir).

Interestingly, while Turmberg is now officially classified Grosse Lage, Wilhelm Weil chooses to bottle only an Erste Lage from this steep vineyard. “There is only one tip on a pyramid,” he explains, referring to Gräfenberg. Indeed, in Germany’s 2024 classification re-evaluation tastings, we hear that Turmberg outshone many of the famous GGs, so you are getting GG quality for the price of a 1er Cru. The pure, rocky slate soils here give the most linear, coiled wine in the lineup. Riesling lovers, saddle up!

“From a cooler side valley and pure gray slate soils, the 2024 Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken opens with a deep, intense and coolish, very clear and stony bouquet of crushed stones, herbs and lemon zests. Full-bodied, finely creamy, vital and very saline on the palate, with fine tannin grip and a certain kind of sweetness or texture, this is a tight, savory, saline and persistent Turmberg with excellent aging capacity. 12.5% stated alcohol.”
96 points, Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate
“The 2024 Riesling Kiedricher Turmberg Erste Lage fermented spontaneously in Doppelstück after a short period of skin contact. The nose is still shy and shimmering with lime and greengage skins. The palate brings a gorgeous lime pith note to the fore, adding riper notions of Reine Claude plum. This is beautifully tart, bracing and fresh, with that wonderful plummy core. The 2024 is juicy, slender and so very animating with exquisite clarity and such purity. (Bone-dry)”

Robert Weil Kiedrich Gräfenberg Grosses Gewächs Riesling 2024

The vineyard of Kiedrich Gräfenberg—or ‘hill of the counts’—has been used to designate Robert Weil’s finest wines since the site was officially classified as ‘Weinlage 1 Klasse’ in 1867. Home to Weil’s oldest vines (up to 80 years of age), with the majority on their own rootstock, it makes perfect sense that Wilhelm Weil decided that it was only from this site that his Grosses Gewächs would derive (even though he could release two GGs from his vineyards).

Weil aims to replicate the style, quality and elegance of the full-bodied dry wines produced in the Rheingau a century ago when the region’s finest Rieslings were the most expensive wines in the world. Despite the high quality of the Turmberg and Klosterberg, this is clearly on another level. The greater loess and loam also impart a distinguishing textural dimension. It’s finer, even more complete and subtly powerful—a wine of obvious Grand Cru class. When you think of what we are paying for top-notch Grand Cru white Burgundy, Weil’s Gräfenberg remains an absolute bargain, matching the best for class and quality. Few (if any!) could match it for longevity.

“From the famous, southwest-facing grand cru, the 2024 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Trocken GG is deep, intense and generous on the nose that intertwines coolish notes of crushed slate and salt with leafy notes and the sweetness of 100% oak (doppelstücks). On the palate, this is a full-bodied, fresh, elegant, refined and savory Riesling. It is not as mighty as the Gräfenberg can be, but it is endlessly saline. 12.5% stated alcohol.”

“The 2024 Riesling Kiedricher Gräfenberg Grosses Gewächs is aromatic from the off, with lemon balm, juicy lemon and greengage aromas, followed by a touch of creaminess and bright allure. The palate is absolutely vivid, taut and tense, with the most gorgeous citrusy juiciness that delves into a note of Reine Claude plum. This is a picture of purity, clarity and Riesling raciness with a lovely, thrilling streak of lime on the finish. (Bone-dry)”

Robert Weil Monte Vacano Riesling Trocken 2022

Monte Vacano comes from a 0.5-hectare parcel in the steepest, most phyllite-rich section of Kiedrich’s Gräfenberg Grand Cru, where 40- to 60-year-old vines sit between Gräfenberg and Turmberg. This parcel was historically bottled separately for celebrations before falling dormant in 1921, and offers purity, elegance and detail over power and richness.

“The 2022 Riesling Monte Vacano was harvested in the steepest part of the Gräfenberg, bordering the Turmberg, from a parcel called “Monte Vacano” in Weil family parlance. The nose already signals what a great future this wine has. Gorgeous dried lemon peel and lemon oil are edged with lemon balm, almost with a touch of peppermint, leading to a gorgeous lift and utter creaminess. The palate is fluid, concentrated, sleek and dynamic, imbued with a certain coolness but also with absolute density, concentration and fill on a textural basis. What a gorgeously balanced wine. A soothing, smooth, ethereal note of mint is so lasting on the finish. (Bone-dry)”

Robert Weil Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese 2024

Weil is widely considered one of the true greats of Germany’s highest Prädikat styles, which places them amongst the world’s greatest sweet wines by default. Riesling authority Stuart Piggot has written: “Where would the Rheingau’s tradition of high-end Riesling dessert wines be today if it weren’t for Wilhelm Weil’s modern masterpieces in the style.” He is not exaggerating!

These wines are as staggeringly beautiful as they are rare. Made in homoeopathic qualities in small, custom-built vats, each sip of these wines is a symphony of flavours, with layers of apricot, peach, honey and hints of citrus intertwining harmoniously with deep minerality and super-charged, crystalline acidify. The purity and poise, not to mention the sublime elegance and vibrating length, are profound. While they are incredibly delicious when opened young, they are also among the longest-lived wines, improving in the bottle for generations.

“The 2024 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese is deep, pure, intense and savory on the nose, with lots of salts or iodine. Round and refined on the palate, this is a beautifully balanced, mouthwatering and textured Spätlese of great class and style. 9% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2025.”
95 points, Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate
“The 2024 Riesling Kiedricher Gräfenberg Spätlese charms with a flicker of passion fruit before lime zest kicks in. Likewise, the palate has a gorgeously tart and sweet tropical overtone. Its aroma and fruit run rings around your brain, full of charm, poise and seduction. The 2024 has immense agility, freshness and energetic liveliness. It comes with 55 g/L of residual sugar and around 10 g/L of acidity. (Medium)”

“The 2024 Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Auslese is deep, rich, concentrated and honeyed on the nose that shows candied lemon rind and saline notes. Clear, clean and mouthwatering saline on the palate, this is a rich and savory, highly stimulating Auslese that was selected with enormous ambitions and meticulous care. This is a great Auslese. 1,500 liters made. 9% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2025.”

“The 2024 Riesling Kiedricher Turmberg Auslese, made from shriveled grapes, sprays with a mix of grapefruit and the merest touch of honey and passion fruit. Immense fruitiness defines the palate, with notes of peach and chervil edged with lime. This is like intense, iced fruit sorbet. It is thrilling, pure and so deeply fruited. How can something so intense be so light? This is crazy and delicious. Its 11 g/L of acidity counters 130 g/L of residual sugar with aplomb. (Sweet)”

“The golden-colored 2024 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Beerenauslese is caramelly on the rich, very intense and nutty nose, although there was almost no botrytis (just 40%). Sweet, highly refined, elegant and enormously saline on the palate, this is a very rich but also precise and balanced Riesling BA with a long and generous finish. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork.”

“The 2024 Riesling Kiedricher Gräfenberg Beerenauslese was made from shriveled grapes without botrytis. It is luminous with a light amber hue. Ripe peach, orange peel and passion fruit aromas enliven the nose. Supple lift drives its perfume home and heavenwards. The palate is intense, candied, pure, lemony and so vivid. The sharpest touch of acid is like a laser beam, creating unrelenting precision, clarity and concentration. This is absolutely intense and slender. Thrilling purity and acidity make this laser-like and unrelenting in its driven energy. It is like airy, spun gold of acidity and fruit, like sweetness refracted through sunlight. “Robert Weil has been one of the icons of German wine culture for many years. Nothing but the finest Rieslings are produced. And as more than 100 years ago, the wines are distinguished in terms of their origins and their style.” Stephan Reinhardt, The Finest Wines of Germany

“Another of Germany's most celebrated domaines, Weil’s wines are noted for their richness and purity, delivering lots of citrus and fruit concentration, without ever seeming heavy or ponderous.”
