Domaine Goisot: Biodynamic Burgundy That Won’t Break the Bank

Domaine Goisot: Biodynamic Burgundy That Won’t Break the Bank
“… the truth of the matter is that quality is shoulder-to-shoulder with far more famous labels. In Goisot, we have a grower as meticulous and as principled as you will find anywhere and the results can be seen in the glass.” Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate
“The estate is totally biodynamic and makes wines of remarkable purity and concentration ... Simply stunning.” Bettane and Desseauve’s Guide to the Wines of France
“No one but no one delivers more quality for the price than Goisot. The quality is flat out amazing, particularly given the modest appellations with which he works.” Allen Meadows, Burghound

As many of our clients will already know, this pioneering, biodynamic domaine in Yonne (the same department of Burgundy that includes Chablis) produces some of the most exciting terroir-rich wines of Burgundy and some of this region’s most outstanding value. For a domaine that works in a “modest” (Meadows) area that most wine lovers have never heard of, Goisot has earned an unprecedented reputation in France. To give you some idea, the late Anne-Claude Leflaive once described Goisot as “a superstar!” when we had mentioned we were visiting Saint-Bris the following day. Praise indeed.

How has such a humble, out-of-the-way grower broken into the Burgundy elite? In short, Goisot farms some of northern Burgundy’s purest limestone vineyards (pictured above); possesses a large proportion of old, massale selected vines; and cuts no corners in the perfectionist, biodynamic vineyard work and precise élevage.

The bewitching 2019 vintage delivered a super-rare combination of ripeness and freshness, with acidity levels similar to the exciting and racy Chardonnay vintages of ‘17 and ‘14. To quote Allen Meadows: “Fans of the domaine are used to seeing it consistently outperform with the modest appellations that it has, and they have done so again in 2019.”
