Quinta do Noval

Single estate Port from a Douro icon
Quinta do Noval

A strong line up from Noval this time, and a few wines you’ll want to grab.  The 2024 Vintage Port comes from a season of near perfect weather, with Touriga Nacional and Touriga Francesa the clear stars, and it shows remarkable purity and clear ageing potential. If you’re after something to pour now, the unfiltered 2019 LBV is made like a Vintage Port, from a terrific year, and over delivers at the price. Then there are the Tawnies, from the fleshy Fine Tawny to the 10 and 20 Year Old, which remain some of the greatest values in wine.

Quinta do Noval LBV Unfiltered 2019

Not all Late Bottled Vintage is created equal. Quinta do Noval pioneered this category when it bottled its first LBV in 1958. Right from the early days, Noval chose to treat this wine exactly like its Vintage Port before aging: focusing on using only great-quality, estate-grown grapes trodden by foot. And unlike the prevailing norm where heavy-handed filtration strips out so much, Noval bottles its LBV without filtration. The result is a considerably richer style that shares some of the depth and intensity of Noval’s VP.

Like the Vintage Port, the grapes are stomped in lagares (the traditional stone vats of the Quinta), then macerate during a three-day fermentation to obtain the best possible extraction of the polyphenolic compounds. From a terrific year for this grower’s Ports, it is a rich and complex wine with gorgeous notes of wild berries and blackcurrant fruit alongside hints of dried peel and Christmas spice. True to form, it’s polished and refined with admirable poise, complexity and a twist of quality dark chocolate and sweet tobacco on the lingering finish. The exceptional 2019 carries on this wine’s proud tradition of fine, structured tannins, great freshness and purity of fruit.

Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2024

Made with wines from ten different parcels, it shows a deep colour and a refined, expressive nose of black cherry, wild berries and violets, with notes of rockrose, redcurrant, subtle spice and a hint of cocoa. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with firm yet polished tannins, balanced acidity and remarkable purity of fruit. The finish is long, persistent and elegant, revealing great depth, delicate hints of dried flowers and clear ageing potential.

The 2024 growing season was marked by a sequence of near perfect weather conditions. August and September, with their sunny days and cool nights, enabled the grapes to reach optimal ripeness. This year, the Touriga Nacional and Touriga Francesa varieties clearly emerged as the stars of the vintage.

"Concentrated and intense, with notable purity and energy. With vivid aromatics of fresh blackberries, violets and a stony touch. Full-bodied yet approachable and harmonious, very composed, with a clear sense of direction. Tension and depth are carried by focused, yet marked, integrated tannins that bring definition and detail. 40% Touriga Nacional, 17% Touriga Francesa, 10% Sousão, 3% Tinta Roriz, and 30% Field Blend."

"Black core with narrow purple rim. Pure fruit bomb of black and blue fruit with a sort of biscuity sweetness. That initial impression gives way to a darker and more brooding layer, more dusty/rocky Douro. Immense power and elegance combined. Essence of vintage port. The tannins are dense yet so fine, they glide. Perfect balance."

"The 2024 Vintage Port represents just 7.64% of the production this year. Picked from ten parcels between September 4 and October 11, with two spells of showers in between, it is foot-trodden and vinified in granite lagares and matured for 18 months in oak cask at the Quinta. This is definitely more intense than the Passadour '24, with upfront scents of plum jam, pressed violets, almost giving it a souped-up Margaux-like allure, clove and dark chocolate. Wonderful delineation. The palate is sweet, playful on the entry. There is just the right density to this Noval, just a little granular in texture, an underlying sour cherry element that imparts tension. Finely chiselled tannins, this Vintage Port had beguiling symmetry, with a sustained finish featuring black pepper and clove. What a gorgeous Noval this is going to be."

Quinta do Noval Fine Tawny NV

Noval’s Fine Tawny NV is an elegant, fleshy wine with good richness and a fresh, tangy finish. Tinta Roriz, Touriga Francesa and Tinta Barroca are the major grape varieties here, sourced from both the estate and Noval’s A-category suppliers. This wine is aged for three years-plus in large oak vats before the final blending and bottling.

Noval’s wine tends to be darker and have more fruitcake richness than most entry Tawnies in the market. This is a legacy of the quality of material involved and the higher rate of evaporation that occurs in Douro—as opposed to Vila Nova de Gaia—which concentrates the grape’s natural residual sugars. Showcasing an intense brick colour, this has a complex nose with youthful cherry fruit and anise. On the palate, it is medium-sweet, with rich fruit and a fresh finish. Try it slightly chilled as an aperitif as they do at the estate (and in France), or enjoy at room temperature with dark chocolate desserts or coffee.

“Dark in color, the wine has plenty of tangy tawny character. It is ripe, full and rich with caramel and spice flavors as well as acidity that is finely balanced. This is an attractive wine, ready to drink.”

"I always love this cuvée, which offers tons of character for a great price. Classic Noval notes of spicy red and blue fruits, orange blossom, cigar, tobacco, and candied mint emerge from the NV Black, and It's round, supple, and full-bodied on the palate, with nicely balanced sugar, a layered yet elegant mouthfeel, and a great finish. Delivering richness as well as freshness, you could certainly do a lot worse for the price. It also holds up nicely with air, and I was able to follow this bottle for multiple days. It's great today and will be great in 7-8 years as well, if not over a decade, although this is not something you need to hide in the cellar."

This is the youngest of the Noval Tawnies with an age indication. It’s made from 50% estate fruit with the balance from A-grade producers in the heart of the Douro Valley. Alongside Tinta Roriz, Touriga Francesa and Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional and Sousão now enter the story. The grapes are foot-trodden and fermented in the traditional lagares of the Quinta. After fortification, the wine is moved to old oak barrels of 640 litres for aging.

Wines selected to become part of Noval’s chain of aged Tawnies are chosen from only the finest remaining Ports after the selection of the Vintage Port has been made. The finished wine is a blend across vintages with an average age of 10 years. It displays complex, lifted aromas of Christmas cake and toffee, with Noval’s elegantly structured palate and a long, dry finish. A superb example.

“A fresh, vibrant style, showing cherry and redcurrant pâte de fruit notes, with blood orange and rooibos tea flavors. Light cinnamon and mineral nuances add to the streamlined finish.”

"Quinta Do Noval's NV 10 Year Tawny offers up a semi-opaque ruby hue as well as a tons of cigar wrapper, chocolate, espresso, and candied black olive aromas, just to name a few. It's complex, medium to full-bodied, and rounded on the palate, with plenty of fruit as well as complexity. Aged in oak in a solera system for multiple years, this is in a sweet spot for me, with a solid mix of sweet fruit and some complex, spicy, tertiary nuances."

“Medium in body- -well, it's a 10, not a 40- -this has fine freshness and perfect balance. The juicy, delicious finish is irresistible and has more intensity of flavor than most 10 Year Olds. Although I tend to look first for freshness in this category, it is also nice to find some complexity and intensity of flavor, too, as here. This is nicely done.”

Unlike Noval’s 10-year-old Tawny, this wine is made entirely from fruit cropped from the Quinta do Noval estate, so this is a step up in quality as well as age. In Port and the Douro, Richard Mayson has referred to this category as, “the epitome of balance combining freshness and delicacy with the secondary toasted almond and walnut complexity from ageing in wood.” Noval’s contribution to the 20-year-old field is pure premier league. Sublimely elegant and refined, there’s so much intricacy and toffee-scented depth. It’s a perfect example of how delicious and complex a 20-year-old Tawny Port can be.

“A shade or two darker and richer than its peers, with warm toffee, hazelnut cream, roasted vanilla, cinnamon and walnut husk notes leading the way, backed by halva, pistachio oil and dried fig details. Lush through the finish, with the walnut hint lingering long enough for all the elements to fall in line. An exotic tawny.”
95 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator
“Deliciously nutty yet fruity with burnt umber notes and some dried orange peel. The perfect age for a tawny port`. Still vigorous and no excess evaporation or rancio. Big and bold but with great balance.”

‘It’s my favourite, it always will be and always have been…’ Quinta do Noval has a ‘genteel quality and accessibility’, offers Wadsack, ‘other ports are more stand up and arrogant and English, for better expression, but this producer is owned by French and has a subtlety’.” Vintage Port Masterclass with Joe Wadsack, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
