Domaine Bernard Baudry: New, Organic Chinon

Domaine Bernard Baudry: New, Organic Chinon
“This estate represents so much of what can be great in French wine today—a fantastic family, vineyards and winemaking worked by the owners, and obsessively terroir-specific drive to capture all of Chinon’s facets. The reds are structured and firm, but also sport mineral, a chalky delicenses. Do not miss the rosé and the rare, beautiful Chenin Blanc.” Parr & Mackay, The Sommelier’s Atlas of Taste
“While they are sometimes labelled traditionalists, I find them to be more naturalists. Everything here is organic, harvested by hand and bottled without fining or filtration. In any case, theirs is a style that I admire: they make cabernet franc taste as suave and succulent as pinot noir.” Joel B. Payne, Vinous

The Parr and Mackay quote above pretty much sums it up: Matthieu Baudry is on fire. The wines from this domaine—be it red, white, or rosé—have never been better, a testament to the family’s superb organic vineyard work and its exceptional collection of terroirs. And they don’t miss a trick in the cellar, where natural yeast fermentation and low sulphur additions hold sway over the more aggressive handling one can often encounter in Chinon.

Alongside a reship of a savoury and delicious Chinon crammed with earthy, sweet Rabelaisian charm, today we offer the new vintage of Baudry’s Les Granges bottling—a bright lip-smacking red of simple perfection. Then, two of the domaine’s rarest wines, the Chinon blanc and rosé. Already one of the Loire’s most charismatic rosé wines (with a cult following to boot) the wine has gone from strength to strength as Matthieu has slowly introduced a new terroir to the blend. The 2021 has to be the finest example we have shipped.

White Chinon is a rare bird at the best of times; Chenin blanc accounts for only two per cent of the total Chinon appellation. Baudry farms under two hectares, and there’s good reason La Revue du Vin de France has labelled the wines “the model of great Chinon Blanc”. Born of a cool season and exceptionally low yields, Baudry’s 2021 Chinon Blanc—redolent with a lovely chalky texture and intertwined with calcareous tension and a saline snap—is a pure delight.
