“Simply a Super Beaujolais”: 2024 Griottes Back in Stock
Chermette

What a difference a year makes. After a run of warm and dry seasons, 2024 is bringing freshness back. And plenty of it. Chermette’s 2024 Griottes is a punchy crowd-pleaser with loads of crunchy blueberry fruit and exuberant cherrystone tang. This is just the kind of Beaujolais the late Marcelle Lapierre referred to when he said, “Ça se boit sous la douche.” (It’s a wine you can drink under the shower.)

A few years back, Jean-Étienne Chermette had the genius idea of bottling a parcel of Griottes “en BIB”—coincidentally, the French slang for bag-in-box. We’ve managed to get our hands on a little more stock, but it shouldn’t last the summer out. And don’t forget that the Chermette family is more than a dab hand at crafting quality sparkling Burgundy. From harvest through to disgorgement, everything is done in-house and by hand. If you don’t know this wine, do yourself a favour; fine Méthode Champenoise at this price is a rare bird.

Domaine Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes 2024

Domaine Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes 2024

This mouthwatering crowd-pleaser is named after a grove of cherry trees that flank the vineyard. The fruit comes from 40-year-old Gamay vines, grown in dark granite soils around the Chermette homestead in Saint-Vérand, Southern Beaujolais. In contrast to their age-worthy Crus from Moulin-à-Vent and Fleurie et al., Chermette aims to produce something light-to-medium-bodied, bright and cherry-fruited with reach-for-another-glass charm.

The winemaking has remained unchanged for decades. Traditional whole-bunch, semi-carbonic fermentation in concrete tanks followed by maturation in tank and old oak casks are still the order of the day. Twenty-twenty four was a cooler year in Beaujolais, gifting, at this level, a thirst-quenching and moreish Gamay with loads of crunch, blueberry and strawberry charm and cherrystone tang. As always, it is a delicious, vibrant wine and fabulous value.

“A good vibration of energy—with a little spice. Plenty of colour. This has a lovely texture and depth of tasty fruit. Good length—simply a super Beaujolais…”

This dry sparkling wine is 100% Chardonnay from a single parcel of vines just north of the Chermette cellars in Le Bois-d’Oingt. It’s a 4.5-hectare, southwest-facing site on limestone/clay soil—perfect for Chardonnay. The wine aged for 18 months in bottle with minimal sulphur. It was neither fined nor filtered, and very little dosage was added (4 g/L). The current disgorgement is a blend of 2021, 2022 and 2023. As always, we love the combination of juicy orchard fruit, fine airy bubbles and the wine’s fresh, sculpted energy.
