Champagne Laherte Frères - Rolling Stones: Fresh Disgorgements of Ultradition, Blanc de Blancs and Rosé de Meunier

“Once again I was deeply impressed with Aurélien Laherte’s Champagnes. The range continues to grow, and yet each wine has a sense of purpose. All of these Champagnes share a feeling of vinous richness that is enhanced by aging in mostly neutral oak and low dosage. The Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs remains one of my favorites for its quality and price, but it’s pretty hard to go wrong with any of these Champagnes.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous

“What I admire most about these Champagnes is their purity and singularity of expression. Varietal and site character are always front and center. Organic/biodynamic farming and a minimalist approach in the cellar inform these wonderfully distinctive Champagnes. It’s next to impossible to choose favorites in this range.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Although Antonio Galloni’s commentary may not count as breaking news for those following this grower, his words neatly underline how Aurélien Laherte is working at a level that bears comparison with many of the best growers in Champagne. In common with many of his peers, the tireless level of viticulture practiced here has become ever more intensive and meticulous. In the cellar, the amplified use of reserve wine, longer time on lees and lower dosage to deliver more transparency have also played a crucial role in raising Laherte’s wines to the level we find today. Aided by a trio of excellent, if novel, vintages (2018-2020), the current disgorgements are teeming with verve, authenticity, and crystalline definition. We will provide more detail when we release Laherte’s single-site and premium bottlings later this year, but for now, you cannot go wrong.
