The Montersino Cru is located at the southern tip of Barbaresco, close to Treiso at 320 metres above sea level. The Roccas’ 0.42-hectare parcel is within the highest and coolest area of Barbaresco and is one of Barbaresco’s most elevated plots. The south-facing vines were planted in 1998 by Angelo Rocca and are rooted on very poor clay and limestone slopes with thin layers of sandstone. The sandstone brings finesse, as does the altitude. Daniela Rocca has pointed out that this soil type (locally called Formazioni di Lequio) resembles Barolo’s Monforte and some of the chalky soils found in Serralunga.

Albino Rocca Barbaresco Montersino 2018

Reviews

“Showing a very fine and lean appearance, the Albino Rocca 2018 Barbaresco Montersino is delicate and nuanced even at this very young stage in its life. There are layers of small berry, cassis, grilled earth, blue flower and crushed stone that complete this very classic portrait of a grape. Only 2,000 bottles were released.”
93 points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
“The 2018 Barbaresco Montersino stands out for its inner perfume and aromatic presence. This mid-weight, lithe Barbaresco is super classy. Dried rose petal, orange peel, mint and wild flowers open with a bit of coaxing. This is an intensely floral, ethereal style, but there is plenty of Nebbiolo grip. The 2018 is all class.”
92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous
“Ripe berry, blue flower and menthol aromas shape the nose. Full-bodied and enveloping, the savory palate offers mature black cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and a hint of mocha framed in tightly woven, fine-grained tannins. It's nicely balanced, with fresh acidity.”
