Toro Albalá

The World's Only Vintage PX Specialist
Toro Albalá

Toro Albalá should need little introduction to our customers. Hugely influential in elevating Pedro Ximénez into the fine wine category, they were the first Montilla estate to begin bottling PX under their own label, were also the first to begin offering vintage-dated PX from their extraordinary library of old vintages, and, as far as we know, are still the only Sherry producer that makes all of their wines, dry and sweet, from Pedro Ximénez. Below we offer the latest arrivals from this remarkable producer (that have arrived with the sold-out back vintages). The shipment includes the ridiculous value 'Solera 1922', Don PX Vintage 2004 (two wonderful sweet wines), and the infinitely complex dry Oloroso En Rama 15-year-old.

Founded in 1844 in Aguilar de la Frontera, right in the heart of DO Montilla-Moriles, the Toro Albalá Estate took its modern form in 1922, under José María Toro Albalá and, from 1970, under the guidance of Antonio Sánchez Romero. Following over five decades at the helm, Antonio Sánchez eventually retired in 2022. Today, with the assistance of winemakers Cristina Osuna and Fátima Ceballos, Sánchez's descendants continue his legacy.

Farmed on the bleached-white, chalky albariza soils of the region, Toro Albalá's old bush vines and the strong, Cordoban sun combine to produce deep, opaque, sweet wines that balance intense richness with a bright, savoury edge, so the wines, though obviously sweet, never become cloying. They go brilliantly with chocolate- or nut-based desserts, strong cheeses, and ice cream, or simply with coffee or on their own at the end of the meal. Forget Chartreuse or other digestifs! Offer your clients a glass of Toro Albalá at the end of the meal, and they will thank you forever!

Toro Albalá Poley Oloroso En Rama 15 Años NV (500ml)

17% ABV. From a solera approaching a century of production, this rich yet almost fully dry Oloroso averages 15 years of age.

It’s fleshy, with a round and velvety texture and a long, vibrant finish. Unfortified again, the nose throws hints of caramel, orange rind and toasted almonds. The palate is mellow and super-complex, with lively freshness and complex flavours of quince, bitter orange and loads of brown spice and tobacco notes. The finish is long and iodine-rich. Perfect to drink on its own or sensational with almonds, charcuterie and very mature cheese.

“The color is a bright orange, and the youthful nose is redolent of dry apricots, toffee and walnuts. Medium- to full-bodied, velvety, it has the telltale toffee and caramel flavors of an Oloroso. The strong bitter note makes an appearance again in the finish.”

Toro Albalá Don PX Solera 1922 (375ml)

This is the debut release of Toro Albalá's 1922 Solera, named for the very same year José María Toro Albalá moved the bodega into Aguilar de la Frontera's old power plant. The grapes are picked by hand in mid-August, then spend a week drying under the Andalucían sun to concentrate their sugars before pressing. A small portion of the finished wine is drawn from that historic 1922 solera itself and is refreshed with younger vintages, bringing together depth, energy and refinement in one blend. The result is a generous, beautifully composed Pedro Ximénez, with cocoa, dried fruit and mocha notes layered against orange peel and hazelnut, excellent acidity, and a long, polished finish. A ridiculous bargain.

Toro Albalá Don PX 2004 (375ml)

Don PX is Toro Albalá's signature vintage-dated wine, with each vintage kept separate from harvest through to bottling, giving every release its own unique personality. It takes almost three kilos of sun-dried grapes (asoleo method) to produce a single litre of this wine. Once pressed, the must is fortified to 9% and then settles in stainless steel tank for twelve months, before being fortified again to 17% and moved into American oak butts for at least twenty years of careful aging. The 2004 is concentrated and rich, with unctuous aromas and flavours of ripe dates, maple, cinnamon and aged brown sugar and then fabulous cut and freshness. Released at over twenty years of age, it is another bargain.

“There is a distinct perfumed note, almost floral (jasmine, orange blossom), a little Moscatel-like that makes it very attractive and that I found in most of the PXs this year, which made them stand apart when tasting them with PXs from producers in Jerez.”

“Toro Albalá from Montilla-Moriles keeps releasing small lots of very old vintage-dated sweet Pedro Ximénez and this time I also tasted a couple of dry, old, vintage-dated Amontillados of mindboggling quality.”  Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate
