The latest releases from Swinney continue the Estate's run of quiet, hard-earned excellence, reflecting the joint effort of owners, siblings Matt and Janelle Swinney, winemaker Rob Mann and viticulturist Rhys Thomas. As always, these wines come from Swinney's meticulously managed Frankland River vineyards, farmed to deliver the finest, most expressive, low cropped fruit. 

 

As for the vintages, 2026 was a great year for Riesling, and 2025 was warm and dry with an early harvest, bringing very low yields and perfectly ripe reds. As the notes below make clear, it's a superb set of wines from an outstanding grower producer.

Swinney Riesling 2026

Grown on organic, dry-farmed blocks in Powderbark, two of Swinney's oldest Riesling plantings, with shade cloth protecting the bunches from excessive sun. In the cellar, the fruit is whole bunch pressed and naturally fermented in neutral vessels, then rested on lees for three months, building texture while preserving purity and freshness.

"A pungent and textural Riesling full of fresh-cut pears, kumquat and spicy lime sorbet. It screams giddiness and youth, as all young Rieslings should. In the mouth, the acidity is striking and linear, framing the wine and playing beautifully with the phenolics to create a chalky, sherbet-like texture. It finishes pithy and dry, with flavour that carries. Drink before the sun gets too high in the sky. Doesn’t need food. "

Swinney Syrah 2025

Swinney has become regarded by many as the finest Syrah vineyard in Western Australia, with one writer describing the Syrah as "more Hermitage than Grange." It's hand-harvested from Wilsons Pool and 30-year-old Powderbark vines, planted to a mix of clones including Jack Mann's own heritage selection. Shade cloth shields the fruit from harsh afternoon sun, preserving freshness and spice, while gravity flow avoids pumping, maximising whole berries. The result is a wine of real structural complexity, built through careful farming and gentle handling in the cellar.

"The boldest and richest of the Rhône triumvirate of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre. The colour is a deep inky red. The nose is an intense and engaging spicy plum and dark chocolate combination, and the palate is both structured and supple, with a fine thread of mineral, ironstone tannins, some well-weighted, understated oak and stacks of plush, lush fruit. Scrumptious, delicious wine."

"This delivers on the promise of the Syrah moniker. It opens with gamey notes and Italianate herbal whiffs, dark cherry, woody spices and a hint of white pepper. The medium-weight palate is inky, quite rich yet lively, with more game meat, forest berries, a liberal dusting of white pepper, and truffle notes chiming in too. There's a building grip of fine yet succulent tannin, a graphite note amongst that. Add this all up, and you've a very fine expression of Syrah, unapologetically savoury and tannin-hewn, which is great, really. "

Matt Swinney's affection for the Southern Rhône and Priorat led him to plant bush-vine Grenache on the estate's ironstone hilltops back in the 1990s, when the variety was virtually unknown in the region and the decision raised more than a few eyebrows. Erin Larkin has called it "a tremendously important wine not only in the context of this vineyard but of the Great Southern Region and, indeed, on a national level, for Australia," while Max Allen has written that it "tastes like no other Australian example of this variety and will change perceptions of the Frankland region."

"This has some get up and go. An energetic red wine with vibrancy of red-berry fruitiness, green olive saline-savouriness, a little tickle of watermelon juice and rosehip tea, licks of vineyard-specific, ferrous, sweet earthiness between the bouquet and palate. There's great perfume here, quite a bit of spice in it, and florals too. The flavours are more subdued in that regard, but there are magnificent riffs of crushed-rock tannin that weave through the juice of the wine, and it's refreshing in its lengthy, chompy finish. A savoury wine of great satisfaction, elevating Grenache's seriousness credentials from WA once again. Ludicrously good."

"The team’s Grenache has certainly proven to be the surprise card in their pack. In the early days, one doubts that anyone was really convinced that they would reach the heights they have managed. Whilst the famous examples of this variety from traditional regions are certainly not to be discounted, don’t miss trying what they have achieved here. It is also excellent value. From Frankland River fruit. A gleaming crimson with a ruby rim, there is a beautifully fragrant nose. There are notes of raspberries, cherries and cream, a touch of blueberries, florals, notably rose petals, and bay leaves. This is a surprising and alternative perspective on Grenache and not to be missed. The wine is finely balanced with great focus and a lingering finish, with a seductive and sleek texture and very good length. Seamless in style with juicy acidity, this will drink beautifully for the next decade. "

Swinney Mourvèdre 2025

Echoing what's already been said about Swinney's Grenache, it's rare to find a Mourvèdre of this purity and distinction from Australian shores. This marks Swinney's sixth straight vintage of the wine, and it continues to bask in the spotlight. The fruit is drawn from dry-grown bush vines on the Wilsons Pool vineyard, planted in the early 2000s on rich, gravelly loam soils.

"This Rhône variety has really found a home in Frankland, and this is another compelling example of the variety. Lovely savoury, mineral notes float across some nice red fruits, with a subtle ironstone edge. The palate is generous but supple, with that fine thread of chalky tannins supported by very gentle oak, handling and controlling the fruit through to a long finish. It's a wine of remarkable complexity and juiciness, with those ripe red fruits and a little blue fruit character filling out the palate."
