Bannockburn Shiraz 2023 (1500ml)

Bannockburn Shiraz 2023 (1500ml)

Bannockburn produces one of the most distinctive expressions of Shiraz in Australia, which can be attributed almost entirely to the site. Fruit for this year’s Bannockburn Shiraz is drawn predominately from vines in the south-facing Winery Block (planted in 1990) and Range Block (1974), with some declassified, high-density De La Roche (planted in 2007) in the mix. The sites possess soils of mainly volcanic scoria over basalt, clay and loam with a limestone-clay base.

Handpicked parcels of fruit were wild fermented separately with approximately 10% whole bunch overall including a portion of carbonic maceration. After pressing the wine was racked to a combination of hogsheads and puncheons of which 10% was new oak. The wine was left undisturbed for 10 months, then racked to 1200l old oak vats for another 6 months maturation prior to blending and bottling. Matt Holmes has pared back the new oak and gradually introduced more carbonic influence in his Shiraz. He feels the mature Winery Block has inherent savoury qualities (due to the clay/limestone, old vines and poor soils), and this treatment lifts the impression of brightness and fruit purity.

“Vibrant and lifted aromas of black and red fruits, with an earthy undertone carrying notes of herbs, cracked pepper, olives and charcuterie. The palate is medium-bodied, with finely tuned tannins and a plush, textural mouthfeel. From a cool vintage, this has plenty of lift and freshness, with a savory backbone. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”

Valenciso Rioja Reserva 2019 (1500ml)

Valenciso Rioja Reserva 2019 (1500ml)

This estate's flagship perfectly encapsulates Luis Gutiérrez’s assertion that Valenciso is one of the most traditional of Rioja’s modern producers. From a selection of handpicked Tempranillo from the clay/limestone soils around Ollauri, the grapes are drawn from 17 organically managed plots spread across the villages of Villalba, Gimileo, Rodezno, Briones and Haro, all within a five-kilometre radius of the winery.

Part of what has been proposed as the Western Sonsierra zone (by Alberto Gil and Antonio Remesal Villar in Rioja: Vinos Silenciosos), these venerable sites lie at the heart of Rioja’s grower-producer genesis in the late 19th century.  Key to the quality includes the patrimony of old-vine Tempranillo (no less than 60 years old in this cuvée) and excellent limestone calcário soils at altitudes up to 600 metres. In the right hands, these historic terroirs imbue their wines with aromatic intensity and great structure for longevity.

The wine ferments naturally in concrete vats before aging for 18 months in (mostly) low-toast Radoux French oak barriques. In recent vintages, 10% of the wine has also been raised in low-toast Caucasus oak, further lessening the wine’s already minimal wood influence. Following aging in barrel, the wine is transferred back to cool concrete vats to settle for a further 24 months before release. Luis and Carmen find the wine clarifies so well in concrete that there is no need to fine or filter it before bottling. “We seek wines with aromatic volume, wines that shine not out of weight but of perfume,” explains Luis Valentín.

“The latest in a fine run of Reservas from Luis Valentín and Carmen Enciso, this well-priced Tempranillo combines components from Briones, Gimileo, Haro, Ollauri, Rodezno and Villalba. Youthful, structured and vigorous, it's a compact, serious, age-worthy red that manages to sidestep the heat of the vintage. Inky and profound with dark plum and blackberry fruit and a balsamic undertone.”

Toolangi Vineyard Pauls Lane Chardonnay 2021 (1500ml)

Hand-harvested from Toolangi’s original 1995 plantings (I1OV3 and Gin Gin clone grapes on D Block). From just rows 35-55, these rows naturally yield fruit that has both intensity and superb freshness.

Crushed and pressed with full solids straight to French oak (20% new). Fermentations were wild and the wine spent 10 months on lees in barrel before bottling.

2021 was a prolonged, classical season allowing for brilliant definition of flavour. It’s quite a dense yet racy Chardonnay with layers of ripe pear, yellow jube and nectarine fruit, nutty complexity and a clean, powdery close.

“Well, yes please. Flint, struck match, white peach and nectarine flavours with fennel, green pineapple, cedar and cream characters purring persuasively throughout. It’s complex, ripe, mouthwatering and lengthy. It’s delicious.”

“From a single block of 26-year-old vines. Whole-bunch pressed to barriques and puncheons (20% new) with no mlf. A bright, deep-ish green gold. Enticing aromas of lightly spiced apples and stone fruits with hints of mint and pink grapefruit. Generous and giving on the front palate, I like how this fine-boned wine finishes taut and long. A stylish wine that should age gracefully.”

Benjamin Leroux Bourgogne Côte d'Or Rouge 2023 (1500ml)

An ouvrée describes a piece of land that one person could farm themselves. This limited magnum bottling debuted in 2022, with the wine made using vinification intégrale, a form of barrel fermentation where the wine is rolled in barrel instead of being punched down or pumped over. So pleased with the result, Leroux has repeated the project, this year using Vosne-Romanée fruit from his vineyard La Croix Blanche. A stellar Bourgogne Rouge that should not be missed!

“From La Croix Blanche in Vosne-Romanée, vinified in the barrel and now bottled in magnum format. Two 500 litre barrels vinified became one in wine. Medium deep purple. More reserved on the nose, and much tighter on the palate but with a sense of nobility, and good tension.”

Champagne Bérêche et Fils Brut Réserve Vieilles Vignes Non Filtrée NV (Base 21. Disg Jan 2025) (1500ml)

Disgorged January 2025. This cuvée has become synonymous with the extreme quality that can today be expected from Champagne’s finest estates. The current release is based on the 2021 vintage and was disgorged in June 2024. Due to the low yields of 2021, the new release comprises 55% fruit from the base vintage, with the balance from the two previous years. The blend is split between 35% Pinot Noir from Montagne de Reims (specifically Ludes, Trépail and Ormes), 35% Chardonnay from sites across Montagne de Reims and Vallée de la Marne and 30% Meunier from Mareuil-le-Port in Vallée de la Marne. Ludes and Trépail provide the tension, offsetting the depth and texture of the Marne fruit and reserve wines. The average vine age is 40 years.

The hard-harvested fruit ferments naturally in barrel before aging in barrel and tank. After bottling, the wine spends 36 months sur lattes in the Bérêche cellar, and finally, is disgorged by hand (!) with around 5 g/L dosage. This is the kind of fastidious attention to detail you would expect from the finest prestige cuvées, and it shines through in the quality of the wine. Antonio Galloni (Vinous) is spot-on when he writes: “Although most readers probably associate Bérêche with some of their higher-end bottlings, the Brut Réserve is a real rock star.” The style is taut and focused; the wine’s natural density and texture are superbly balanced by crystalline acidity and smoky mineral resonance.

“The NV Brut Réserve (base 2021) is a bit unusual in this release, in that reserve wines account for 45% of the blend because the base year was so challenging. It’s an approach that worked out well though, as the finished wine is gorgeous. Pear, apricot, white flowers, spice, mint and almond all grace this nuanced, classy NV Champagne. Floral overtones appear later to lift the finish.”

Champagne Bérêche et Fils Campania Remensis Rosé 2019 (Disg. Mar 2025) (1500ml)

Bérêche’s succulent and salty rosé uses the Roman name for the countryside around Reims. The 2019 is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 10% Meunier with 25% Chardonnay, topped up with 5% still red. The fruit is sourced from vines planted by the brothers’ maternal grandmother in the 1950s. These three hectares of old vines are deeply rooted in the sandy Les Montées vineyard in Ormes, just west of Reims.

Disgorged by hand with 3 g/L dosage, the palate unpeels with flavours of red berries and Bandol-like blood orange, tobacco and sweet spices complemented by chalky mineral and saline notes. But it’s just as much about the texture, which is pillowy and charming before tapering to an incisive, fine-boned finish. We’ll leave the last word to Jamie Goode, who wrote in 2015 that Bérêche’s wine “is one of the best rosé Champagnes that I’ve had. It’s so beautiful.” Or perhaps to William Kelley: “exquisitely ethereal”. Or Jancis Robinson: “a rosé for the table. Perfume and gorgeousness.” Speaking of the table, Raphaël tells us that his favourite match with this wine, so far, is roast pigeon (à la Racine in Reims).

“Pale pink, no nose. It tastes surprisingly sweet for just three grams of dosage – a sort of candied-blood-orange sweetness. At first I was a bit taken aback, and then the wine proved me wrong. The fruit in this wine is sumptuously ripe, untrammelled, beautiful, wild strawberry fruit. And there's a whisper of nutmeg and allspice. Fragrant and persistent. A deep finish. It's a wine you want to press into. I would love this with paper-thin slices of ruby-rare roast beef or duck.”

Champagne Laherte Frères Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature NV (Base 21. Disg. Apr 2024) (1500ml)

This mineral-charged Champagne is 100% Chardonnay from the family's chalkiest soils in Chavot and Épernay. These vineyards are biodynamically farmed, and the soil is rich in chalk and chalky clay (marl), with pockets of flint and schist. The chalkiness drives the wine’s striking, racy and intensely saline minerality—that energy, freshness and zingy, citric line—while the clay balances fruit weight and texture. The recent addition of Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs premier crus of Vertus and Voipreux has only lifted the remarkable quality. Built on perfectly ripe fruit, this bottling is based on the low-yielding 2021 vintage, with 50% reserve wines from the two previous years. As the name suggests, it’s bottled without dosage.

Aged for just over two years in bottle following primary fermentation in barrique, foudre and tronconique cask, like all Laherte’s Champagnes, this cuvée is disgorged by hand. More than ever, it’s stunning value for those who love purity and minerality in their Blanc de Blancs. Now released with an additional seven months in bottle, the new disgorgement is a wonderfully sculpted Champagne, sizzling with tension and penetrating focus.

“The NV Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs is bright and finely sculpted right out of the gate. The blend of 50% 2021 and 50% 2020/2019 comes across as a bit austere, but that’s not surprising given the base 2021 vintage. Crushed rocks, mint, citrus, white flowers and sage all take shape. As always, the Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs is a Champagne of great character. It's a terrific value, too.”

Champagne Laherte Frères Ultradition NV (Base 21 Disg. Nov 2023) (1500ml)

Base 2021. Disgorged November 2023. Base 2022. Disgorged Dec 2024. Dubbed “just impeccable, especially within its peer group” by Galloni, Laherte’s Meunier-led ‘entry-level’ Champagne comes from eight different parcels across the Coteaux Sud d’Épernay and Vallée de la Marne. The blend of 60% Meunier, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir represents the diversity of the Estate’s plantings. Some 40% of the blend these days is drawn from the two preceding vintages.

The juice naturally ferments in a mixture of vessels, including two 50-hectolitre Rousseau tronconique casks, old barrels, foudre and concrete. The wines were always aged on lees and see partial malolactic conversion (around 60-70% on average). Based on the 2021 vintage with 40% reserve wines, it’s taut and juicy with loads of delicious, racy, redcurrant and apple skin Meunier fruit fused with citrus and saline tang from the Chardonnay. This Extra Brut bottling is disgorged with 4 g/L dosage. As fun is it is to drink, it’s a serious and complex wine for the price.

“The NV Extra Brut Ultradition is a very pretty, gracious wine consisting of a blend of 60% Pinot Meunier, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir from eight vineyard sources. Perfumed floral and spice notes give the Ultradition lovely brightness to match its mid-weight, notably vinous personality. Orchard fruit, chamomile, dried herbs, mint and crushed rocks are all wonderfully expressive, if a bit light. This is an especially nuanced edition.”

Champagne Larmandier-Bernier 1er Cru Longitude Blanc de Blancs NV (Base 18 Disg. May 2023) (1500ml)

Disgorged May 2023. Like this grower’s Latitude, this is 100% Côte des Blancs Chardonnay (the vineyards are in Cramant, Avize, Oger and Vertus), yet the vineyards have thinner topsoils, and so the vine roots plunge straight into the chalky bedrock. The name here refers to the vertical nature of the geographic locations of the vineyards as well as the style of wine resulting from the chalky soils of these sites, i.e. a more linear, mineral wine. While Larmandier’s Latitude is expansive across the palate, the Longitude is all about minerality, line and raciness. William Kelley has called this wine “one of the finest non-vintage bottlings to be found in Champagne”, and the high ratio of reserve wines (40% from their perpetual reserve started in 2004) should leave you with little doubt as to the quality on offer. This bottling is based on the 2018 vintage, with 40% reserve wine drawn from a ‘perpetual’ reserve started in 2004.

“Delivering aromas of citrus pith, pastry cream, crisp orchard fruit and freshly baked bread, the latest rendition of Larmandier-Bernier's NV Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Longitude is medium to full-bodied, chalky and incisive, with a rich core of fruit, racy acids and a pretty pinpoint mousse. Concluding with a long, saline finish, it's more chiseled than its Latitude counterpart and represents an appreciable step up.”

Champagne Larmandier-Bernier 1er Cru Rosé de Saignée (Base 18. Disg. Apr 2021) (1500ml)

The Rosé de Saignée is drawn mostly from what are thought to be the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Vertus (45 years old), and one of this village’s very last 100% Pinot vineyards. In fact, the vineyard is a co-planted blend of 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Gris, with both varieties contributing to this wine. The grapes were allowed to macerate for a period before the juice was drawn off, providing the colour and much of the body and flavour for the wine. This saignée technique is now rare in Champagne, primarily as it is a demanding method of vinification and it requires grapes with an excellent degree of maturity. Most rosé in Champagne is made by the addition of a little red wine. Vive la difference!

As with all Larmandier’s wines it was naturally fermented. Part of this cuvée was raised in a Nomblot concrete egg and part in stainless steel, and more recently Larmandier has been also trialling amphora designed by Mizel Riouspeyrous from Domaine Arretxea.

It’s one of Champagne’s wow wines, repeatedly compared to a Chambolle-Musigny. In short, it’s a Champagne that can stop drinkers in their tracks. The 2019 is a spellbinding release built on energy and crystalline tension. Although it drinks beautifully on its own, it has the depth to go with smoked or grilled salmon. Yes, do that—you won’t regret it! This bottling was disgorged with a discreet dosage of three grams per litre. It is a superb release that will be even better with a year or two in the cellar.

“Larmandier-Bernier's NV (2018) Extra Brut Rosé de Saignée is a very pretty wine. The style is a bit more floral and savory, with less vinous intensity than some previous editions, but plenty of ethereal nuance. This is an especially understated style. Dosage is 3 grams per liter.”

“The NV Extra Brut Rosé de Saignée (2018 base) will soon be disgorged, and readers will be able to identify it by its deeper, unusually saturated hue without looking at the small print. Bursting with aromas of pear, plums, orange rind and sweet berries, it's medium to full-bodied, round and enveloping, with a ripe core of fruit and the most phenolic presence I've tasted in this perennially superb cuvée. That makes this 2018 base a more vinous, gastronomic wine, which will offer interesting possibilities at the table.”

“The village of Vertus is unusual in the Côte des Blancs for playing host to a historical plantation of Pinot Noir. Here it is assembled with a little Pinot Gris by Côte des Blancs stalwarts Pierre and Sophie Larmandier into a striking, deep-cherry rosé de saignée (made by macerating the Pinot Noir skins in the juice at press). Absolutely bursting with strawberry and floral tones yet still manages to retain a linear, focused energy and supple texture that’s quite unusual for the style. A Côte des Blancs original.”

Champagne Larmandier-Bernier 1er Cru Terre de Vertus Blanc de Blancs 2015 (Disg. May 23) (1500ml)

Terre de Vertus is one of three single-terroir Blanc de Blancs produced at this estate and is certainly the most famous. It is from a parcel of vines on the chalky mid-slope of Vertus, traversing the 1er Cru lieux-dits of Les Barillers and Les Faucherets. These sites produce intensely mineral wines that recall the best of Le Mesnil (to the north) in their chalky raciness and drive.

This fermented naturally, with roughly 60% fermented and aged in neutral barrique and the other 40% in large Stockinger casks. Malolactic conversion began spontaneously, and the wines were left on their lees for nearly a year. After the second fermentation, the wine aged in bottle for another six years before being disgorged. There is no dosage in order to respect the purity of the terroir. The result is one of the most distinctive and mineral wines of the entire Champagne region—and one of the benchmark wines of the great grower movement.

Since the mid-‘90s, this wine has always been non-dosé—long before it was fashionable. The Larmandiers made the decision because this particular terroir (when farmed in their way: old vines, biodynamics, low yields, etc.) works best without any additions. Still very young and brimming with textural richness and energy, the new release shows a little more flex than the previous vintage. Courtesy of an especially low-yielding year high in dry extract, the palate is buoyed with freshness and the chalky finish is incredibly long and scintillating. Try it with oysters, terrine, hard cheeses, roast chicken or grilled white fish.

“The 2015 Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Terre de Vertus continues to show well, offering up generous aromas of peach, orange oil, ripe melon, white cherries, buttery pastry, orange oil and dried white flowers. Full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with a vinous, muscular profile and a long, gently mordant finish, it's one of the more powerful wines in the range.”

Champagne Larmandier-Bernier Grand Cru Vieille Vigne du Levant 2013 (Disg. May 22) (1500ml)

This Blanc de Blancs was historically labelled Vieille Vigne de Cramant. Nothing has changed save for the name, which is now inspired by the vineyard where most of the grapes come from, Bourron du Levant (planted in 1960). The balance comes from a 0.5-hectare holding in the neighbouring terroir of Le Fond du Bâteau (with 75-year-old vines).

Both plots are at the heart of Cramant’s southeast-facing slopes on the flanks of the Butte de Saran. Basking in the first rays of the morning sun, these vineyards give wonderfully ripe, layered wines. The old vines’ deep root system combines with the terroir to bring a wine of glowing density and opulence. It offers a fascinating, concentrated and stone-fruited contrast to the other Larmandier cuvées (not to mention other producers’ Cramant wines). It remains a super-mineral wine, but here you have more flesh, weight and body.

The winemaking across each of Larmandier’s single-terroir wines is similar. Here, it is spontaneous fermentation and malolactic conversion, 12 months in large Stockinger barrels and no filtration. This cuvée, however, spends at least eight years in bottle on lees. This release was disgorged with 2 g/L dosage.

“The 2013 Extra Brut Vieille Vigne de Levant Grand Cru is a Champagne of real breadth and substance that captures the essence of these 50-70-year-old vines. Apricot, chamomile, dried flowers and a kiss of oak are all amplified. Vinous and creamy, the 2013 builds beautifully with time in the glass, showing tremendous character and pedigree. The 2013 was fermented and aged in a combination of neutral barrique and foudre. Its a super-classic Larmandier-Bernier Champagne. Dosage is 2 grams per liter.”

“The Larmandier family excelled in this cooler vintage, so it's unsurprising that the 2013 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Vieille Vigne du Levant has turned out beautifully. Wafting from the glass with notes of crisp yellow orchard fruit, brioche, white flowers, oyster shell and honeycomb, it's medium to full-bodied, deep, layered and incisive, with a tangy spine of acidity, terrific tension and a long, racy finish.”

Champagne Larmandier-Bernier Latitude Blanc de Blancs NV (Base 19. Disg. Sep 23) (1500ml)

Latitude is 100% Côte des Blancs Chardonnay from vineyards on the southern side of Vertus. These vineyards are on roughly the same latitude, hence the name, which also hints at the breadth of texture that wines from these sites—having more clay in the soil—tend to offer. In the cellar, Larmandier uses mostly large casks (almost all the wood now comes from Stockinger in Austria).

Fermentation and malolactic fermentation take place naturally, and there is no filtration. Latitude matures in bottle for more than two years before disgorgement and dosage at low, extra-brut levels at least six months before release. This bottling is based on the 2021 vintage, with 40% reserve wine drawn from a ‘perpetual’ reserve started in 2004. Upcoming releases will include fruit from some terrific vineyards in Villeneuve and Bergères, which will only further buttress the quality.

“The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Latitude 1er Cru is bright, punchy and full of mineral-driven intensity. Crushed flowers, lemon peel, sage, mint and crushed rocks build as this potent, intensely saline Champagne opens in the glass. This is impressive. As always, the Latitude is a Champagne built on textural breadth and volume, typical of wines from the southern sector of Vertus. This release is based on 2019 and 40% a perpetual reserve that goes back to 2004. Dosage is 3 grams per liter.”

Champagne Pascal Agrapart Grand Cru Terroirs Blanc de Blancs NV (Base 21. Disg. Mar 25) (1500ml)

Agrapart’s scintillating Terroirs is 100% Grand Cru, with the fruit sourced only from great sites across four revered villages in the Côte des Blancs: Avize, Cramant, Oger and Oiry. Together with the terroir, vine age is a key quality factor, with the average age of the plantings at more than 50 years.

This release is based on three outstanding vintages: 2021, 2020 and 2019. The reserve wine (the earlier vintage) makes up a remarkable 70% of the cuvée—another telling factor in its quality. After natural fermentation, half the wine matured in large-format, neutral oak and spent over 36 months on lees. Dosage is limited to 3 g/L, and disgorgement was carried out by hand in March 2025.

This is another flat-out stunning disgorgement of this wine. Although the 7 Crus is terrific, this is, as always, another level altogether. The quality of the Grand Cru sites, the age of vines, the vintages involved, and the dominance of reserve wines in the blend all play their role in this difference. Regardless, it’s evidence of a stellar grower in perpetual movement. The wine is already wonderful but will, as always, benefit from another year under cork.

"The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Terroirs is an excellent introduction to the estate’s Chardonnays. Heavily based on Oger (around 40% of the blend), with the remainder coming from Oiry, Cramant and Avize, it’s already expressive, offering aromas of honeysuckle, nectarine, bread and fresh hazelnut. Medium to full-bodied with bright acidity and complemented by a pillowy mousse, it concludes with a long, sapid finish."

“The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Terroirs Grand Cru is unusual in that it is a blend of three vintages (2021, 2020 and 2019) instead of the more typical two, because of very low yields in 2021. There's real density and power here, but not at the expense of Côtes des Blancs citrus, floral and mineral character. As always, the Terroirs is a blend of parcels in Avize, Oger, Cramant and Oiry, all Grand Crus.”

Within the cold, west-facing, Kimmeridgian limestone-rich lieu-dit of Biaunes, there is a small plot of Chardonnay that Gautherot planted wild—that is, without preparing the soils and among native vegetation (a totally crazy idea). The Côte des Bar is overwhelmingly planted to Pinot Noir, but in 2000, Gautherot chose Chardonnay. He used mass-selection cuttings from Anselme Selosse’s vines (in Avize) and Vincent Dauvissat’s Valmur Grand Cru vineyard. This plot has become the base of what Antonio Galloni calls “one of the most beautiful and distinctive wines in Champagne”. As of 2020, the cuvée also includes fruit from the Fonnet vineyard as well as Vouette itself, which was previously planted to Pinot Noir before replanting to Chardonnay several years ago.

Indigenous yeasts ferment the wine in used 500- and 600-litre barrels, with a small portion fermented and raised in Georgian amphora (see Textures). As with Fidèle, this wine spends roughly 15 to 18 months in bottle on lees before being disgorged by hand with zero dosage. For the record, the Biaunes vines yield only 15 to 20 hl/ha each year, which is key to the depth and mineral intensity on offer. Were it not for bubbles, you could be drinking a great Grand Cru Chablis.

Fidèle is 100% Pinot Noir grown on Kimmeridgian limestone soils. This includes roughly 5% reserve wine from a perpetual blend started in 2001 and stored in two large old foudres. The Fonnet vineyard, located in a small, enclosed valley, forms the heart of this cuvée. Sorbée provides much of the balance, topped off by Châtel—a rocky, limestone-rich vineyard with 20-plus-year-old Pinot Noir vines. Overall, the vines average 30 years of age. After pressing in a traditional vertical Coquard press, Fidèle is vinified—without added yeast or chaptalisation—in used Burgundy barrels for 10 months (these came from Domaine Arnaud Ente in Meursault). The wine then spends 15 to 20 months on lees in bottle after secondary fermentation and is disgorged with zero dosage. Gautherot describes this as “a dangerous wine”—the bottle disappears so quickly—and this description could not be more apt. Dry, savoury and super mineral!

With two stars in France’s leading wine guide, Revue du Vin de France’s Le Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France, this is the highest-rated Crozes Domaine, reaffirming Maxime Graillot’s great work. With vines aged between 40 and 50 years on average, the Graillot terroirs are firing on all cylinders. Organically managed, gnarled and meticulously manicured vines reach up from a sea of smooth, rolled stones like the hands of an old vigneron. They are rooted on the Terrasse des Chassis in Pont-de-l’Isère, where the soil was formed by ancient alluvial deposits of sand, gravel and river stones.

The grapes were loaded (crushed without destemming) into lined concrete vats for a two- to five-day pre-ferment maceration. After natural fermentation, the wine was aged in used François Frères barriques (between one and seven years old) purchased from some of the finest Estates in Burgundy. Since the 2011 vintage, 20-hectolitre Stockinger ovals have also played a quiet yet growing role. This is a beautifully rounded, classic Graillot Crozes with bundles of energy and finesse; a super Northern Rhone Syrah that recalls the Domaine’s finest vintages. A bargain.

“Brooding black cherry and spice nose with some olive, crushed rock and pepper. There’s a hint of cured meat, too. The palate is powerful and rich with olive and meat savouriness under the sleek black fruits. Such energy and depth.”

“A driven, balanced, flavorful, textural and lively Crozes-Hermitage, showing aromas of dark cherries, spiced plums, wild herbs and warm spices. It's medium-bodied with fine tannins. Superb texture and balance here with a long, succulent and vivid finish.”

Biodynamic. La Moussière is one of the great vineyards of the Loire Valley. Cultivated with incredibly rocky, limestone-rich soils, this gently rolling vineyard lies on ancient Saint-Doulchard marls, which form part of the great Kimmeridgian chain (à la Chablis). Coupled with Mellot’s meticulous biodynamic farming and low yields, this terroir is responsible for some of Sancerre’s most striking and atypical wines.

As usual, 50% of this wine fermented in huge wooden fermenters and was raised in oak casks—a fact that in no way compromises its fabulous purity and energy. The balance fermented and was raised in traditional concrete vats before blending. The wine aged on fine lees for roughly 12 months, further enhancing its famously deep, pulpy texture. Reminiscent of a topflight Chablis, those who crave flesh, purity and tension in their white wines will find great company here. Full of supple nectarine and ripe grapefruit, the wine unfolds on the palate like a coiled white Burgundy. A great La Moussière—is there any other kind?!

Organic. Chenin Blanc. This small, enigmatic vineyard-cum-appellation on the north bank of the Loire River traces its roots back to the Cistercian monks of the 12th century, who, for good measure, also planted the legendary Coulée de Serrant next door. Its name, The Monks’ Rock, also refers to the schist bedrock and soils littered with volcanic rocks. Tessa Laroche is one of only 12 vignerons to own a parcel in this prestigious vineyard that sits high atop the wider Savennières appellation.

The wines of Roche-aux-Moines once produced what became a house wine in the court of Napoleon Bonaparte, and today, Tessa Laroche reminds us why Savennières was once considered among the most prized French wines. To reach this plateau, Laroche declassifies the fruit from any younger vines and yields are kept extremely low, usually around 30 hl/ha. Even then, the grapes are harvested at perfect ripeness over a series of six tris or pickings.

In the cellar, the grapes ferment through indigenous yeasts and the wines age for 18 months on lees in a mixture of used barrels (220 and 400-litre) and 20-hectolitre foudre. Unlike in the past, it undergoes full malolactic conversion every year, and the only sulphur addition takes place at bottling. The resulting wine is, to quote Jon Bonné (The New French Wine), “a case study in Chenin Blanc intensity”.

From a year Tessa Laroche rates as her most successful to date, the 2022 is a true terroir wine—with all guns blazing. Climbing out of the glass, the delightfully fleshy Chenin fruit is complemented by flecks of the flinty, dark-hued minerality that helps make this vineyard so distinctive. Laroche’s wines take less time to blossom than those made by her mother, Monique, yet this vintage could easily age, with benefits, for 10+ years.

“A tasting of various lots from stainless steel cuves and wooden foudres. Foudre #1: A 20-hectolitre Lacroix foudre. Tense, smoky and reductive nose. A polished style on the palate, very harmonious, complete, minerally, entirely correct for the appellation. Fabulous. Foudre #2: A 20-hectolitre Grenier foudre. Wonderfully smoky and reductive. Bright, tense and minerally on the palate, veined with acidity, delicious and reductive. Long too. Superb. The alcohol is around 13.5%. As usual I have added a note of caution to my ranged score.”

Diam. Much like the rest of Burgundy, Chablis’ finest vineyards have, for better or worse, become synonymous with a symbolic grower. This is the case with Côte de Léchet and Domaine Bernard Defaix. With nine hectares of vines overlooking the village of Milly, the domaine is the largest single holder within this 1er Cru, and its cellars sit at the base of the Léchet hill. Didier Defaix is, therefore, the vineyard’s emblematic vigneron—as well as the site’s only certified-organic grower.

Perfectly exposed to the southeast, Jasper Morris MW describes an archetypal wine from Léchet as “entirely white fruited in style …not dissimilar to Beauroy, but with more intensity”, while Andrew Jefford suggests the hill gives “some of the most 'mineral' Chablis of all”. In 2023, you get the best of both worlds, alongside chiselled, chalky texture and an extra spoonful of fruit sweetness compared to a classical vintage. Taking advantage of the vineyard’s intensity and to build complexity, Didier Defaix ferments a quarter of this wine in old, neutral barrels which previously housed Defaix’s old-vine Reserve Léchet bottling.

“Less width but there’s extra depth of aroma here – yellow citrus again with a more mineral clarity at the base. An extra incisive start, the minerality of the previous wines with a hint of extra structural rigour. The finish is vibrant and grows wider and wider.”
Bill Nanson, Burgundy Report

“Bursting with lemon curd, warm milk and crushed chalk on the nose, the same follow onto the well-balanced, nobly creamy and dry palate. The finish displays zesty acidity. Didier Defaix oversees 8 ha of vines here, making the domaine the largest holder of this Premier Cru.”

“Bursting with lemon curd, warm milk and crushed chalk on the nose, the same follow onto the well-balanced, nobly creamy and dry palate. The finish displays zesty acidity. Didier Defaix oversees 8 ha of vines here, making the domaine the largest holder of this Premier Cru.”
