Corzano e Paterno

Bohemian & Beautiful, Traditional Chianti
Corzano e Paterno

Located on the steep slopes of the Val di Pesa (between Florence and Siena), Corzano e Paterno is a picturesque organic farm on the very edge of the Chianti Classico area. Here the Goldschmidt and Gelpke families produce not only the beautiful Chianti we import, but also outstanding olive oil and Pecorino cheese that they sell to many top Italian restaurants. Corzano e Paterno is an ancient and beloved Estate (in fact two historic Estates merged together) and is still run by the two families who own it, with the winemaking and vineyards led by Aljoschia (Joschi) Goldschmidt, Arianna Gelpke (his cousin), and now Joschi's son, William. There are 20ha under vine, all rooted in the local clay and limestone soils, and all situated at 300 metres ASL. Nothing here is about chasing fame or fortune. Everything is about sustainability (in every sense of that word), honouring the place and producing authentic products. The wines are both delicious and pure, and, even though they are wonderfully precise, they are not at all glossy or oaky, but rather full of Tuscan character. They are wines that carry the place, the tradition and the soul of this family farm in Tuscany.

Corzano e Paterno Toscana Bianco Il Corzanello 2025

Organically farmed and hand harvested from the cooler pockets of the property, this is always a racy, Trebbiano dominant, blend that includes some Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Petit Manseng and Sémillon. The grapes were cooled immediately after picking, whole-bunch pressed, and the must left to settle for 24 hours before a slow fermentation between 15 and 18 degrees. No malolactic here, just four to five months resting on fine lees. The result is a fresh, tangy and floral white, aromatic and bone dry, with white blossom, crunchy orchard fruit, and lemongrass notes. A gorgeous and unique white.

Corzano e Paterno Toscana Rosso Il Corzanello 2025

A wonderful bargain, this is a savoury, super classic tasting Tuscan blend. It's 100% organic and estate grown Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a touch of Merlot. Again, the fruit comes mainly from cooler spots on the Estate, and the winemaking is built around keeping the wine bright, fresh and digestible. The grapes also get a week or so of cold soak, giving the wine some fine, powdery structure. The result is some superb Tuscan value, with sweet black cherry fruit, iodine and violet scented fruit, all held together by fine tannins and vibrant freshness.

Corzano e Paterno Chianti Terre di Corzano 2024

Organic. The estate’s core wine is the Chianti Terre di Corzano, which translates as ‘soils of Corzano’. It’s a blend of 90% Sangiovese co-fermented with 10% Canaiolo, all hand-harvested from Corzano’s rocky, south-facing slopes. The soils here are what the Italians call alberese—compact clay/limestone littered with pebbles—which tends to yield particularly aromatic reds.

Incorporating 15% bunches, the wine fermented naturally and matured in a combination of 25- and 40-hectolitre botti, a traditional maturation that has become rare in today’s barrique-obsessed Tuscany. Arianna Gelpke favours the softening impact of large-format wood on Sangiovese tannins, and we can only agree.

Corzano’s transparent style, emphasising purity of fruit, is in full flight once again. It’s bursting with the essence of hillside Sangiovese, with layers of dried cranberry, blueberry, sweet earth and iris root woven together by succulent acidity and ripe, supple tannins. The Canaiolo adds a dab of sweet spice and anise to Sangiovese’s palette of cherry, blue fruits and grilled-herb complexity. 2024 has gifted a fresher, tenser version this cracking Sangiovese.  A fantastic drink, even better when served alongside smoky red meats, roast pork or deep-flavoured lasagne. No Classico, no cry.

Corzano e Paterno I Tre Borri 2023

Named for the three small rivers that converge on the property, I Tre Borri is Corzano's most profound and generous wine. It is pure Sangiovese from three parcels of the estate's oldest vines, planted by Wendel Gelpke in the 1970s and cropped low, at roughly one bottle per vine. The fruit is selected twice, first in the vineyard and again in the cellar, and the wine is made only in the finest vintages. Since 2015 it has been bottled as Toscana Rosso rather than Chianti Riserva. Aljoschia Goldschmidt felt the Riserva DOCG image was in decline and preferred the IGT designation to convey the quality and philosophy of a wine made from the cream of Corzano's Sangiovese.

Fermentation is spontaneous, in truncated cone-shaped wooden vats and small open-top containers, and in the best years a portion of the grapes is left as whole bunches. Maceration lasts up to 40 days, with daily punching down and only rare pumping over for a gentle extraction. After a soft pressing, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in wood and ages for two years in tonneaux and 25hl barrels. In the glass, it is an intense ruby red. The nose shows red fruits and a spicy note of cinnamon. The palate is soft and fruity, finishing with a smoky aftertaste.
