Camille Thiriet

Super 2024s from An Emerging Burgundy Phenom
Camille Thiriet

The 2024s from Camille Thiriet and her equally talented husband Matt Chittick are terrific. The whites are juicy and mineral, and the reds are fine-boned and superbly crafted renditions of the whole bunch style that Camille and Matt love and execute so well. This is no surprise when you consider that Jeremy Seysses of Domaine Dujac is one of their best friends (and was best man at their wedding), and that Bernard Noblet, retired Cellar Master of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, helped them produce their first five vintages. As you would expect from a young Domaine, the wines keep getting better and better, and the 2024s absolutely blew us away when we tasted them in Burgundy last year. The only negative is that the volumes are low, thanks to extremely low yields in 2024—13hl/ha in both colours! Regardless, Burgundy lovers should not hesitate!

Maison C. Thiriet Bourgogne Aligoté Du Jardin 2024

Thiriet’s Du Jardin is a blend of old-vine Aligoté Doré from parcels in Comblanchien and Meursault. The yield from these ancient vines is tiny, partly accounting for the aromatic intensity of this cuvée. The fruit was pressed together using a vertical press and raised in old oak (20% new) for nine months. A small yet decisive skin-contact component adds to the texture and complexity.

"A discrete nose but with width and the impression of some generosity below. Hmm, melting from a generous but still mouth-watering and beautifully balanced. Wide and complex finishing. Delicious finishing."

Maison C. Thiriet Bourgogne Blanc Cuvée Confidentielle 2024

Camille’s négoce Bourgogne Blanc has been in the portfolio since her first vintage in 2016. The wine is so named because at the start, Thiriet made such a tiny amount in her garage. The source varies year to year. The new release comes from Puligny-Montrachet and Peronne in Mâcon. This is a terrific Bourgogne with loads of character, splendid texture and a vibrant, zesty finish.

“More airy and wide – certainly more forward – the clarity of citrus is very appealing. Generous but with super scale and even more super mouth-watering flavour. What a beautiful Bourgogne that maybe has some of the generosity of the Mâcon but none of the extra sunshine that you usually get with blends from there!”

Domaine Camille Thiriet Bourgogne Blanc En La Place 2024

Camille’s Domaine Bourgogne Blanc is drawn from La Sablière between Corgoloin and Comblanchien. The vines are 60 years old, and the 2024 is sensational, with lovely, pure, pulpy fruit (pear, golden delicious apple and hazelnut notes) and terrific, mouth-watering freshness.

Domaine Camille Thiriet Bourgogne Rouge En La Place 2024

Thiriet’s Domaine Bourgogne Rouge comes from the same vineyard as the Bourgogne Blanc, but the Pinot vines are even older. The vineyard’s name, La Sablière, refers to the sandy clay soils, partly explaining this wine’s beautiful, lifted perfume of summer fruits and red flowers. The vines are 90 years old, some even older. Simply a stellar wine for this level: elegant, pure-fruited and vivid with a pretty cherry and raspberry fruit, lacy structure and classy length.

“Made from 90-year-old vines, using 50% whole bunch vinification. Mid ruby, strawberry fruit with a smoky edge. En La Place is its usual attractive self, just a little lighter than previous years. Drink from 2026-2028.”

"Direct, faintly reductive. Slightly saline too. In the mouth, it’s quite a direct wine but with the juicy energy of dark fruit. Chalky texture to finish as a counterpoint to the perfumed flavour. Yum!"

Domaine Camille Thiriet Bourgogne Rouge Les Chagniots 2024

Domaine Camille Thiriet Bourgogne Rouge Les Chagniots 2024

Les Chagniots comes from a small parcel of 60-year-old vines under the Domaine d’Ardhuy’s Clos des Langres in Corgoloin. The name Chagniots is often cited as a reference to small oak trees, though it also denotes iron-rich minerals in the local patois, so may refer to the thick reddish soils high in iron oxide. This release fermented with 30% bunches, and it is delicious: sweet-fruited and seductive, yet with impressive refinement. This is an expressive, character-filled red Burgundy for a fair price.

“Les Chagniots sits on deeper clays here, near Domaine d’Ardhuy. 30% whole bunch vinification. Rich purple, much greater fruit depth, no sign of the stems. There is currently a mini reduction here, but it will be trumped by the beautiful fruit expression behind. Drink from 2027-2029.”

"A wider, more vibrant nose, supported by a deeper note of dark fruit. Dark, vibrant, more fluid, extra clarity – oh yes – here’s a super villages. So fine finishing – again a little chalky at the end, but with extra energy and perfume. Bravo!"

Domaine Camille Thiriet Côte de Nuits-Villages Rouge Cuvée Deslandes 2024

This impressive red comes from 90-year-old Pinot vines (!) high on the slope of Comblanchien, not far from the Château de Comblanchien. Although drawn from a terroir called La Julbigne, Camille prefers to call this bottling Cuvée Deslandes in honour of an early benefactor—and it’s certainly easier to pronounce! The wine was vinified with 80% whole bunches, and a portion matured in stainless steel to capture as much of the vineyard’s delicate, floral aromatics as possible. Really, really delicious, classy wine. A 1er Cru in all but name.

“80% whole bunches for the Cuvée Deslandes. Not the deepest crimson purple. Camille talks of “the nose of Comblanchien”. Certainly, this shows a savoury aspect with graceful red berry fruit. Discreet at the front, building beautifully behind. Drink from 2027-2030.”

Maison C. Thiriet Côte de Nuits-Villages Rouge Aux Montagnes 2024

This was the cuvée that started it all—the first wine that Thiriet released. Aux Montagnes is a four-hectare parcel directly below the Comblanchien château and quarry. Sited on the belly of the slope at 260 metres—where the Côte de Nuits 1er Crus normally sit (just saying)—there is only 25cm of clay-limestone before the vines tap directly into the bedrock. The clay here is quite red, with a high iron content. Thiriet works with a parcel of vines from Nicolas Potel’s holdings planted in the 1970s. She uses fewer bunches for this vineyard as the stems add a lot of tannins here. The result is a more fleshy, hedonistic style of Burgundy (yet still fine-boned!) with excellent density and waves of sweet fruit.

“80% destemmed. A very pretty ruby-crimson. Elegance, a suggestion of the ethereal in the nose, very high class. Just a little tension on the palate, from fine-grained tannins, and fine length. Drink from 2028-2030.”

"Extra width of aroma – a vibrant energy of darker red fruit. Mouth-filling, juicy, delicious – the tannin supporting the flavours with a small grain, a small fluidity of flavour. Pretty finishing – keep it 3 years to bring an extra softness to the texture…"

Domaine Camille Thiriet Côte de Nuits-Villages Rouge La Montagne 2024

Not to be confused with the Aux Montagnes négociant bottling, this comes from a high, Estate-owned site (280 metres) on the Corgoloin-Ladoix border. La Montagne lies below Clos Magny (see below) and faces due east. The soils are light and dominated by sandy clay. In Camille’s words, the wine combines “the freshness and purity of Savigny with a little more depth and structure of the Côte de Nuits.” From 60-year-old vines, this has a cooler and slightly more structured persona than the Magny below. La Montagne would benefit from some time in the cellar—even if, like all of Matt and Camille’s 2024s, it’s already delicious. The use of 50% whole bunches contributes to a long finish full of sappy energy.

“50% whole bunch vinification. Very elegant, very stylish, though a bit closer to the earth. Fresh red fruit goes all the way through, with enough grip at the back. Drink from 2027-2030.”
90 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"More direct, still. A vibrant aromatic. More vibrant in the mouth too – and juicy. Plenty of wide-finishing tannin but with a very delicate, pretty finishing flavour profile. So delicious and long finishing…"

This cuvée is from a small 0.8-hectare parcel within the larger Le Clos de Magny climat in Corgoloin. Thiriet’s plot is at the top of the slope at 350 metres covering three soil types, including one on straight rock, and another with a clay buffer. Surrounded by the forest, part of the vineyard is often in the shade, which Camille believes works in her favour in warmer years. Another idiosyncrasy is the mass of large boulders that run through the soil just under the surface. It all adds up to a unique terroir that gifts tiny berries and little, loose bunches. These allow Camille to use 100% whole-bunches after cutting out the thick end of the main stem.

“100% whole bunch. Flamboyant lively purple with a beautiful energy to the dark berry fruit on the nose. Darker fruit all round, yet filling the mouth, with some (once again) fine-grained tannins at the back. Drink from 2028-2030.”

This tiny 0.6-hectare monopole above the Corgoloin cemetery was the jewel in Gilles Jourdan’s portfolio. Now, Camille Thiriet wears the crown. The vineyard takes its name from the owner in Napoleonic times, and part of the site’s claim to fame is the rare outcropping of blue marl that imbues its wines with exceptional longevity. It’s the only vineyard in the area with these rare soils. Camille told us she had tasted wines from 1957 and 1979 with the previous owner and was blown away by the quality. The vines in Thiriet’s plot average 60 years old, and the 2024 was fermented with 80% bunches. This is Thiriet’s most serious and complex wine: compact with deep, dark cherry fruit, roasted brown spice notes and fine, powdery tannins. Give it a few years and wait for the fireworks. In terms of the reviews below, remember that a 92 from Jasper Morris et al. for a “village-level” wine is very impressive and well-deserved.

“Five Stars. Medium to deep ruby purple. The most fruit density of the wines to date. An explosion of ripe rich red fruit heady cherry flavours, with a crisp tension to finish. 80% whole bunch vinification. Even one more step up! Drink from 2028-2032.”
92 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"Really, an extra complexity, finely grained complexity with a small spice. Ooh – direct, melting, fluid flavour, the most sophisticated texture of all the wines. Almost an extra minerality in this discreetly wide finish."

“Domaine Camille Thiriet is a testament to a venture built almost from scratch. Since 2016, Camille Thiriet and Matt Chittick have developed the estate from a micro-négociant operation launched in a garage in Comblanchien. In 2022, they acquired Domaine Gilles Jourdan, bringing the estate to nearly six hectares. Farmed organically, their pure, fresh wines shine a light on the lesser-known terroirs of the Côte de Nuits-Villages appellation." Michelin Grape Selected Estate

"Camille is an exceptional talent, whose wines reflect their terroirs admirably. She has made another excellent range in 2024, with no sense of fragility." Jasper Morris MW,  Inside Burgundy
