This is a mountain Saint-Joseph, from the exposed, 320-metre hilltop lieu-dit of Janoune, which is close to JBS’s cellar at Andance. This vineyard was planted between 1980 and 2000 with massale selection vines that yield small berries and compact bunches that almost resemble Pinot Noir. The vines are managed organically by the cousin of Souillard’s father. Sited on the granite ridge of Andance, which forms part of the Châtelet Mountain, there are stunning 360-degree views that take in both the Alps and the Massif Central.
The 2021 was fermented and raised for 14 months in just two mature, 225-litre oak casks. It’s a fleshy, yet compact release, bristling with inky density and whole-bunch freshness.
