Settled on a limestone plateau above the Loire, the chalky soils of Les Bournais would not be out of place on Vouvray’s Première Côte (home to Clos de Bourg and Le Mont). Unlike most of Montlouis—which is on clay and flint—this four-hectare vineyard is on a pocket of clay and Bournais limestone, the stone from which it takes its name. The vines (planted in 1998) gently follow the contours of the land, right to the edge of a chalky precipice. The roots have just 35 centimetres of clay soils to burrow through before hitting the limestone bedrock, perhaps one reason we always see a distinctive smokiness in the aromas of these wines.

Reviews

“The 2020 Les Bournais is a silky, seductive wine that retains a sense of shape despite its ripeness. The appellation of Montlouis has lots of clay-flint, but this is clay-chalk, and the result is a round yet focused style with fine length and line. The barrel fermentation and maturation (just 10% new) doesn't impart any flavor but adds to the roundness and gives support to the wine. Fully dry, you can expect ripe apple, pear and a gentle lick of sweet brioche on the medium-long length. Sourced from clay-limestone soil.” 92 points,

“I like the aromatics here, softly presented and suggestive of crushed orange and peach. There is an immediately apparent sense of rhythm on the palate which is richly textured with a sinewy build and plenty of phenolic grip. This has the advantage of a dry grip, although it is the sense of bitterness rather than the acidity that pushes it along. Very good.”
