The larger of the Domaine's two great monopoles, the 7.2-hectare Clos des Forêts Saint Georges runs the full width of the slope from forest to road, encompassing three distinct terroirs—white oolitic limestone at the top, pink Prémeaux limestone through the middle, and clay-rich Ladoix limestone at the base. Each of these soils are now managed, harvested and vinified separately by Géraldine Godot. Historically, this vineyard has produced the most structured and profound red in the l'Arlot stable, the wine that is the most Nuits, if you like. However, in recent years Godot, by managing each parcel separately and by thinking deeply about the terroi, has managed to find a much more “Premeux” or “L’Arlot” expression of Forets. The 2023 is very much in this latter mould. It was made from 100% destemmed fruit, fermented spontaneously and aged 16 months in French oak (40% new). The finesse and precision is impressive, as is the seductive flesh. Yes, it’s deeper and more obviously structured than Clos de l'Arlot, yet it has the same superb balance and class.
