Domaine de l'Arlot

Sublime Purity and Elegance from a ‘Top Ten’ Burgundy Domaine

Domaine de l’Arlot is now the holder of a three-star rating from France’s most revered wine guide, Le Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France, published by La Revue du Vin de France. The ‘Green Guide’, as it is often called, is France’s wine equivalent to Le Guide Michelin. As per the Michelin guide, three stars are the summit and dubbed the ‘Olympus for French Wines’. At the last count, only 10 Côte de Nuits Domaines are rated trois étoiles, and l’Arlot now finds itself alongside the likes of DRC, Rousseau, Ponsot, Roumier, et al.

Obviously, this is a tremendous acknowledgment of the work of the current manager/winemaker, Géraldine Godot, who has brought this fascinating estate to the very top of the Burgundy tree. Taking nothing away from the great work of her predecessors—Jean-Pierre de Smet, Olivier Leriche, and Jacques Devauges—we agree entirely with Neal Martin, who has written that Géraldine Godot is “possibly making [Domaine l’Arlot’s] best wines ever.”

This l’Arlot style is one of purity, perfume, and seduction—yet still with enough stuffing to age very well. This is why we buy Burgundy: to be able to drink wines like these.

Domaine de l’Arlot, with its hillside vineyards and 19th-century gardens, has what many consider to be the most beautiful estate in Burgundy. Since the late 1980s, this producer has also been responsible for some of the prettiest red Burgundies going around. The perfume, silkiness and flickering clarity of these wines are born of the l'Arlot vineyards and the Prémeaux terroir in general. Prémeaux has always stood apart from the rest of Nuits-Saint-Georges and made wines that are altogether finer and more elegant than those produced further North, around the town itself. L’Arlot brings the finesse of this terroir to the fore with their approach to wine growing and élevage. Biodynamic farming; perfect, well-sorted fruit; gentle extraction; and whole bunch use, all play their part. Every step, from vineyard to bottle, is tailored to underline purity and finesse.

In the cellar, Godot refuses to follow any recipes, instead adapting her winemaking to the season. In 2020, for example, she used between 50 and 70% whole bunches across the red cuvées. The warm, dry season produced stems that were riper, and Godot felt the ferments would benefit from the inclusion of whole bunches. She was right. In 2021, a much cooler, wetter season, there were no whole bunches added at all. So, no recipe, only careful consideration of the personality of each terroir, in each season, and then thoughtful, precise handling in the cellar. Of course, adaption is the name of the game these days in Burgundy. Godot is a highly thoughtful, sensitive and intelligent winemaker, and the quality of her current releases only underscores why this iconic Domaine is now rated so highly.

Domaine de l'Arlot Grand Cru Romanée-St-Vivant 2010 Museum Release

In 1991, Domaine de l’Arlot purchased a few rows of Romanée-Saint-Vivant in the Quatre Journaux terroir, the ‘island’ of RSV below La Romanée-Conti, where Arnoux-Lachaux is also based. It’s a jewel of a plot, with 24 rows over a tiny quarter-hectare parcel planted in 1973. On average, it produces only three barrels of wine, and our average allocation is 12 to 18 bottles. The wine ages mostly in one-, two- and three-year-old barrels, with 40% new oak.

Domaine de l'Arlot Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de l'Arlot 2022

Clos de l’Arlot is the Premier Cru monopole at the heart of this domaine. It’s where the domaine’s buildings and winery are situated, with the vines straddling the steepest, narrowest part of the Côte d’Or. The stone walls date back to the 18th century, when the Clos de l’Arlot was created. These vines produce a far more delicate, ethereal wine than the nearby Clos des Forêts, its sister vineyard just down the road. Only 0.87 hectares of the oldest Pinot vines planted in Clos de l’Arlot are used for this Grand Vin. Most of these were planted between 1939 and 1951 on the steep, concave amphitheatre part of the slope historically known as Cadastre no. 15. Although Clos de l’Arlot is labelled Nuits-Saint-Georges, the place really has so little in common with the rest of Nuits, and this shows through in the wine’s personality, which is much more Chambolle. This reflects the rocky, close-to-the-forest Prémeaux terroir (which is as good for white wines as for reds). The 2022 is one of my favourite releases under Géraldine Godot. It has a ripe, lifted nose, but the palate is so fine, pure and delicate. The balance and finesse of tannins is something special.

“The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de l'Arlot 1er Cru also showed a little reduction on the nose, with brambly red berry fruit and wild hedgerow, touches of loam emerging with time. The oak, 40% new, is neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied, with plenty of black plum and raspberry fruit on the entry. Lots of sucrosity here, gentle grip, hints of allspice and even a dab of licorice towards the finish. It's quite a stocky Clos de l'Arlot at the moment, yet very well-balanced, so give this three to five years in bottle.”
92-94 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“A mid crimson colour, slightly deeper than Mont des Oiseaux. Rather more pure red fruit on the bouquet. Fine tension, medium plus bodied, more strawberry than raspberry, with an even fruit through to the finish, where the fine tannins and light acidity are in balance.”
91-93 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
“A more open and quite a bit broader nose – a slight cushion to this more concentrated red fruit and, today, the very faintest of barrel notes. More scale, energy and wonderful clarity. There’s the domaine’s vintage fluidity too. I love this finishing flavour – edged with gooseberry. Quite larger scaled finishing than the last – only the finish could be a bit more delicious – but I still think that this could be a great wine – bravo!”

Domaine de l'Arlot Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Mont des Oiseaux 2022

Domaine de l'Arlot Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Mont des Oiseaux 2022

This wine comes from the vines at the very top of Clos de l’Arlot. It is named after the little passageway at the top of the vineyard, from which you can hear birdsong from the forest above. The vines are around 20 years old. This plot has a particular terroir: steep, with a blend of white and pink limestone and chalky clay topsoil. The vines here ripen a few days earlier than their counterparts on the more clay-rich soils of the bottom part of the site. The 2022 is a wonderful wine with superb finesse and perfume. “Has the palate weight of a fine Chambolle with the spice of Vosne,” I wrote. The Bill Nanson note below captures it well.

“The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Mont des Oiseaux 1er Cru was raised in 35% new oak and taken from barrel. The nose demonstrated a slight reduction, though attractive cranberry and wild strawberry fruit are already in place. The medium-bodied palate offers dark berry fruit laced with blood orange and a touch of clove. Quite citrus-fresh towards the well-structured finish. There is ample depth here, and the oak allows the terroir to shine. Very fine.”
91-93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“Top part of the Clos de l’Arlot on white limestone, younger clonal vines. A pretty mid purple, what seems to be an iron rich note on the nose, though it is not that. A stony touch too. This is elegant, medium bodied, indeed seems light at first until there is a burst of fruit towards the back. Good crisp acidity to finish along with an attractive red fruit perfume.”
90-92 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
“Narrower, very fine – there’s fruit focus and a pretty floral perfume too – rather elegant. Again, fluid, the flavour has energy but not too much, the texture is lovely, and the intensity is also present but not too much – a wine to sink into without being too contemplative – super wine!”

Domaine de l'Arlot Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts Saint Georges 2022

Domaine de l'Arlot Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts Saint Georges 2022

The second of the two great monopole vineyards at the core of this domaine, Arlot’s Clos des Forêts Saint Georges, is one of Nuits’ great terroirs, made evident by its position so close to Les Saint-Georges (its name reflects this proximity). At 7.2 hectares, Clos des Forêts Saint Georges is by far the largest single parcel in the Arlot stable and produces the estate’s most profound red wine.  Running the entire width of the slope, from the forest to the RN74, Forêts contains three distinct terroirs, which Geraldine Godot picks and vinifies separately. From top to bottom, these three soil types include a band of white oolitic limestone with very little topsoil; a fracture in the middle of the vineyard, where pink Prémeaux limestone takes over; then ‘younger’ Ladoix limestone and more clay at the bottom of the slope. Regular buyers will recall that some of the youngest vines were previously harvested for the now-defunct Petits Plets cuvée. These vines are over 30 years old and have come of age, earning the right to form a part of this cuvée. We have seen more and more finesse and precision from this wine under Godot’s tenure, and this trend continues with the 2022. It’s a deeper and more structured wine than Clos de l'Arlot, as is always the case, but it also has wonderful balance, finesse and class. Super fine and frankly a bargain in the context of today’s Burgundy.

“The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Forêts Saint Georges 1er Cru was also raised in 40% new oak. [Incidentally, 0.6ha will be planted with Chardonnay in 2024]. Slightly deeper in color compared to the Clos de l'Arlot, this has slightly more cohesion and complexity on the nose: dark cherries and crushed stone, a hint of wilted rose petals in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with beautifully integrated new oak, lending this a velvety veneer. It is a little plush yet with equivalent tension and a detailed, slightly piquant finish. This is an outstanding Nuits Saint-Georges from the Domaine.”
94-96 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“A fuller purple than either Arlot cuvée, which is as normal. The bouquet holds the promise of clean fruit at optimum ripeness, but does not deliver detail at this point. Plenty of energy here, some slightly firmer tannins, correct acidity, and then the more perfumed red berry fruit, slightly more raspberry here, returns at the back.”
92-93 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
“More airy higher tones are visible – very classy. This is direct, cool and intense – the structure is more visible – ooh super intense too. Nothing is too much but altogether this says wait 5+ years – you will be more than rewarded by this great wine – such a finishing scale – still with plenty of bitters!”
