One of Burgundy's most singular, least known but superb white wines, the Clos de l'Arlot Blanc is a Chardonnay Premier Cru monopole from a site that demands everything be done by hand, given the rugged and rocky slopes in this part of the Clos are too steep for machinery. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged 12 months in French oak (20% new) before three months in vat, the 2023 is a rich and layered white-Burgundy and, as the notes below make clear, it is seriously good. Those who know, know!

Domaine de l'Arlot Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de l'Arlot Blanc 2023

Reviews

“Complex mineral and flint aromas are supported by layers of white flowers, lemon pith, orange blossoms and profound chalkiness. The palate is medium-bodied with energetic acidity and a vivid mouthfeel, giving a chewy sensation, a mouthwatering finish and a steely, granitic aftertaste. Excellent energy and complexity from a site that also produces refined reds. Delicious.”

“The 2023 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de l'Arlot Blanc 1er Cru, which was taken from tank and will be bottled in December. This has quite a leesy bouquet as you would expect, though with fine energy and delineation, touches of Anjou pear emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with a lovely texture, a little honeyed, though not overtly tropical with a delicate touch of spice that enlivens the finish, hints of peach skin on the aftertaste. This might well surpass the previous vintage.”

“Sour-fresh citrus aroma. Just lightly spiced from the oak. Lovely chewy freshness on the palate. Ripe citrus balanced by that touch of oak and the creamy, firm texture.”
