Domaine de L'Iserand

There’s a common saying in London town: you wait ages for one, then two buses turn up at the same time. So, we’re delighted to offer a second new addition to our Rhône portfolio in as many weeks. Before hanging up his corkscrew in 2017, Jean-François Malsert owned the hippest wine bar in Tournon-sur-Rhône, Carafe aux Folies. With his mop of blond hair and sharp palate, Malsert rubbed shoulders with the great and good of the northern Rhône before crossing the floor to join them.

Malsert, or Jeff to his friends, farms seven hectares of hillside vines perched high above the Rhône river around the town of Sécheras in the northern Ardèche. Jeff started out with his grandfather’s old, abandoned vineyards, which he has replanted using massale Syrah and Gamay. Further plots of older vines have followed, including. Syrah, Roussanne and Chasselas. Many of these are planted above 300 metres and therefore deemed too high to take the Saint-Joseph appellation.

Malsert works his soils—thin granitic sands laced with schistous rocks—with the help of his two mules, Lana and Cassius, whose hooves, noses and ears adorn the labels. Cassius, a giant beast worthy of a Homerian epic, is the more obstinate of the two, Jeff tells us! He’s practising organic farming, too, though points out that his grandfather’s soils have never been treated with chemicals.

In the cellar, Malsert draws on the wisdom of Rhône masters such as Gonon, Trollat and Faurie, while embracing the supple, perfumed sensibilities of new traditionalists, including Dard & Ribo, and Herve Souhaut. The Syrahs are wild fermented with whole clusters, bringing an engaging, bunchy character without overt greenness. Meanwhile, his preference for concrete, amphora and old oak lets his fruit sing.

Had the two sets of wines not been so complementary, we might have thought twice about launching a pair of new growers based in the same appellation so close together. Where Jean-Baptiste Souillard crafts cerebral, enigmatic Rhône wines, Malsert’s wines billow out of the glass with striking perfumes of violet, dark minerals and juicy black cherry, always underscored by vibrant, high-country freshness. Yet, for the Saint-Joseph reds, there is always an underlying gastronomic structure. Jeff’s partner, Saïda, a talented chef, would not have it any other way.

Domaine de l'Iserand Vin de France Syrah 2023

Malsert’s buoyant Vin de France comes from five parcels of mass-selection Syrah planted in Sécheras high above the Rhône River. At 360 to 420 metres, these sites are just too high to be part of the Saint-Joseph appellation. Fermented wild with whole bunches, Jeff raised this wine in concrete to accentuate its vibrant, early drinking nature. There’s also lighter extraction compared to the Saint-Joseph. Blurring the lines between the granite terroirs of Rhône and Beaujolais, it is bursting with notes of smoked meat, violets and cola bottles balanced by juicy tannins, high-grown crunch and a vibrant, ‘another-glass-please’ finish.

Domaine de l'Iserand Saint Joseph 2023

Here’s a wine to remind us that Saint-Joseph can possess real finesse and vibrancy. It’s a 100% Syrah from two sites: south-facing granite and mica-schist soils at Sécheras, and decomposed granite with loess and hard granite soils at Ozon. Both sectors sit high above the Rhône River at 300 metres; any higher and the vines could not be classified Saint-Joseph. Naturally fermented as whole bunches, the wine spent two weeks on skins with a little carbonic, and aged without oak. Instead, it was raised in concrete tanks and amphora for 18 months. Leaping out of the glass, it is already bright, refreshing and dripping with succulent red fruits and peppercorn spice mopped up by focused acidity and twist of mineral brightness.

Jean-François Malsert’s natural leaning, high-grown whites shine like stars in the night. The pulpy, amphora-raised Rodéo is a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne on pure gneiss soils in Sécheras, elevated 350 metres above the valley floor. With notes of juicy yellow apple skin, herbs and minerals, there’s an engaging skinsy richness to this wine before tension and verve take over, driving the finish towards white florals and a tangy, citrussy finish.

Domaine de l'Iserand Saint Joseph Les Sabots de Coppi 2022

This vibrant Saint-Joseph was Jean-François Malsert’s first wine, and it retains pride of place in his portfolio. It’s a 100% Syrah from two adjacent parcels in granite and mica-schist at Sécheras, perched above the Rhône River at 300 metres; any higher and the vines could not be classified as Saint-Joseph. The oldest vines are 45 years old, contributing delicious brambly depth; younger vines of 15 years of age add the brightness.Whole-bunch fermented (with no additions), Les Sabots de Coppi was raised for 19 months in a mixture of concrete and sandstone amphora. Resonating with peppery black raspberry, allspice and candied florals, it’s a deliciously juicy and lively Saint-Joseph with just the right amount of supple structure to support aging. The cuvée name means “Coppi's hooves.” Coppi was the name of the mule owned by Jean-Francois’ grandfather, who named him Coppi after the famous Italian cyclist.
