This is a mountain Saint-Joseph, from the exposed, 320-metre hilltop lieu-dit of Janoune, which is close to the cellar at Andance. This vineyard was planted between 1980 and 2000 with massale selection vines that yield small berries and compact bunches that almost resemble Pinot Noir. The vines are managed organically by the cousin of Souillard’s father. Planted on the granite ridge of Andance, which forms part of the Châtelet Mountain, there are stunning 360-degree views which take in both the Alps and the Massif Central.
The 2020 was fermented and raised for 14 months in just two, mature, 225-litre oak casks. It’s a fleshy, compact St-Jo bristling with inky density and whole-bunch aromas underpinned by sophisticated fruit and refined tannins.
