This vibrant Saint-Joseph was Jean-François Malsert’s first wine, and it retains pride of place in his current portfolio. It’s a 100% Syrah from two adjacent parcels in granite & mica-schist at Sécheras perched above the Rhone River at 300 metres; any higher and the vines could not be classified St-Jo. The eldest vines are 15 years contributing delicious brambly depth; younger vines of 15 years of age add the brightness.
Inspired by the old school masters as much as he is the newer guard (Dard et Ribo and Hervé Souhaut), Malsert’s Syrah strike a beautiful balance between structure, freshness and purity. Whole bunch fermented (with no additions), Les Sabots de Coppi is raised for 19 months in a mixture of concrete and sandstone amphora. Resonating with peppery black raspberry, allspice and candied florals, it’s a deliciously juicy and lively Saint-Jospeh with just the right amount of supple structure to support ageing. The cuvee name means Coppi's hooves. Coppi was the name of the mule owned by Jean-Francois’ grandfather, who named him Coppi after the famous Italian cyclist.
