Now in its third year, Ricky Evans’s small-batch Gewurztraminer is hitting all the right notes. The fruit hails from Waverley Vineyard just east of Launceston. Ricky has managed the low-yielding, 1.5-hectare site since 2015, so you know the farming is top-notch. Though the lion’s share of the plantings is dedicated to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this small block of Gewurztraminer holds a special place in Ricky’s heart. “I love making this wine,” he told us. Ricky picks just on the cusp of ripeness to preserve vibrant, frisky acidity in the full-flavoured fruit. Then, it’s pressed as whole bunches straight to seasoned barrels for fermentation and five months’ maturation on lees. In Ricky's own words: “Super simple, super yummy.”
