Very limited. With its eroded limestone walls, all covered in creepers and wildflowers, this is one of Gevrey’s most picturesque vineyards. It is situated high on the border of Brochon next to Les Evocelles. The soils are very stony with red clays, and the mother rock is very close to the surface. The Mortet vines here are now 80 years old, and he ploughs his four small plots (totalling 0.5 hectares) by horse. This site typically delivers very small berries and powerful, ripe fruit flavours with high-grown, fruit-of-the-forest finesse and freshness. Incredible finesse on offer here for a lucky few.

Reviews

“Five Stars. From the upper part of Champeaux, in the little quarries, on the rock. These are 70 to 80-year-old vines so made with pedicel. Worked by horse, as there is no tractor access. A rich glowing purple. A touch of white pepper on top of the intense dark red berry fruit. Strict, firm yet very intense, such a vast weight of luscious fruit, a good balancing acidity and tannins which are perfectly refined, silky. This has the extra to caress the throat. Drink from 2031-2038.”
94-96 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
“The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux has turned out very well, offering up aromas of cherries, sweet red berries, orange zest and petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate that's pure, precise and floral.”
92-93 points, William Kelley, The Wine Advocate
“The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru comes from a site with 70- to 80-year-old vines, worked by horse as it is not accessible by tractor (this has been done since 2008). This has a slightly reductive bouquet, though there is still a sizable concentration evident here. The palate is medium-bodied with a powerful opening, slightly confit-like red fruit, hints of marmalade and blood orange and a slightly more exotic, licorice-tinged finish. Very fine.”
92-94 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
