This wine comes from very old vines in En Champs, Combe de Dessus and Aux Echézeaux. Close to the Brochon borderline, En Champs sits high up on the slope, just beneath the 1er Cru Champeaux at the northern end of what is sometimes called the Côte Saint-Jacques. Arnaud Mortet knows this terroir well; En Champs forms the backbone of his Mes Cinq Terroirs cuvée and was previously bottled as its own old-vine lieu-dit. The vines here are over 100 years old, delivering tiny yields of intensely flavoured grapes. The vines in Aux Echézeaux, on the Morey line, and Combes Dessus, below Cazetiers, are only slightly younger, averaging 80 years old. The 2023 fermented with 70% hand-destemmed fruit and was matured in 30% new oak.

Reviews

“Five Stars. A blend of Combes Dessus, Aux Echezeaux and En Champs, the vines being from 80-100+ years, yielding 35 hl/ha. En Champs, at the northern end of Gevrey, bordering Brochon has the oldest vines. 70% whole bunch and pedicel style, with the large stems removed. Glowing ruby crimson. A very refined nose, not over stated. Rich full fruit, with a little more oak showing then the pedicel takes over at the back of the palate, extending it enormously. All red fruit not black and really fine. Cherries to finish. Drink from 2029-2035.”
92-95 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
“The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes is a blend of three different parcels between 80 and 100 years old from three terroirs. This has a very floral bouquet with wilted rose petal infusing the vivacious red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth texture, the removal of the pedicels lending a silkiness that I don't think you would obtain otherwise. Lightly spiced toward the harmonious finish, this is one of Mortet's more sensual offerings in 2023.”
91-93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes is lovely, wafting from the glass with notes of dark berries, orange zest, spices and rose petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate that's rich and creamy, the vintage expressing this bottling's tendency toward structure as simply greater depth and weight of fruit.”
90-92 points, William Kelley, The Wine Advocate
