Nestled beneath the Grand Cru vineyard of Mazis-Chambertin, La Perrière has some of the oldest bedrock in the village. Mortet’s wine comes from 0.35 hectares across two small, stony parcels directly under Mazis. La Perrière is a small vineyard and much divided, so it’s a pleasure to have this wonderful 1er Cru back in Bibendum’s books—Benjamin Leroux’s access to La Perrière ceased with the 2017 vintage. Crafted with 70% whole bunches.

Arnaud Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Perrière 2023

Reviews

“The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin La Perrière 1er Cru was done with 70% whole bunch with the central stem removed. It has a fresh and quite floral bouquet, notably effervescent with touches of orange blossom. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins, fresh and crisp. It is silky smooth in texture with a transparent finish reminiscent of, say, Duroché or Rousseau. Superb.”
93-95 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Perrière offers up an ethereal bouquet of sweet red berries and spices, followed by a medium-bodied, supple and saline palate, concluding with a mineral finish.”
90-92 points, William Kelley, The Wine Advocate
“70% pedicel style. Variable terroir between the mother rock and more earth in other parts. Arnaud notes that the fruit can ripen quickly here. A denser ruby. Slightly less expansive on the nose, with a dark fruit behind and slightly more tannins. Then a soft rich dark fruit to finish, a level of ripeness needed for the tannins to soften here in La Perrière. Drink from 2029-2035.”
