The second of the two great monopole vineyards at the core of this domaine, Arlot’s Clos des Forêts Saint Georges, is one of Nuits’ great terroirs, made evident by its position so close to Les Saint-Georges (its name reflects this proximity). At 7.2 hectares, Clos des Forêts Saint Georges is by far the largest single parcel in the Arlot stable and produces the estate’s most profound red wine.  Running the entire width of the slope, from the forest to the RN74, Forêts contains three distinct terroirs, which Geraldine Godot picks and vinifies separately. From top to bottom, these three soil types include a band of white oolitic limestone with very little topsoil; a fracture in the middle of the vineyard, where pink Prémeaux limestone takes over; then ‘younger’ Ladoix limestone and more clay at the bottom of the slope. Regular buyers will recall that some of the youngest vines were previously harvested for the now-defunct Petits Plets cuvée. These vines are over 30 years old and have come of age, earning the right to form a part of this cuvée. We have seen more and more finesse and precision from this wine under Godot’s tenure, and this trend continues with the 2022. It’s a deeper and more structured wine than Clos de l'Arlot, as is always the case, but it also has wonderful balance, finesse and class. Super fine and frankly a bargain in the context of today’s Burgundy.

Reviews

“The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Forêts Saint Georges 1er Cru was also raised in 40% new oak. [Incidentally, 0.6ha will be planted with Chardonnay in 2024]. Slightly deeper in color compared to the Clos de l'Arlot, this has slightly more cohesion and complexity on the nose: dark cherries and crushed stone, a hint of wilted rose petals in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with beautifully integrated new oak, lending this a velvety veneer. It is a little plush yet with equivalent tension and a detailed, slightly piquant finish. This is an outstanding Nuits Saint-Georges from the Domaine.”
94-96 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
“A fuller purple than either Arlot cuvée, which is as normal. The bouquet holds the promise of clean fruit at optimum ripeness, but does not deliver detail at this point. Plenty of energy here, some slightly firmer tannins, correct acidity, and then the more perfumed red berry fruit, slightly more raspberry here, returns at the back.”
92-93 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
“More airy higher tones are visible – very classy. This is direct, cool and intense – the structure is more visible – ooh super intense too. Nothing is too much but altogether this says wait 5+ years – you will be more than rewarded by this great wine – such a finishing scale – still with plenty of bitters!”
