The 2021 Carnuntum is a blend of Blaufränkisch (65%) and Syrah (35%) from several organic parcels on the southern Spitzerberg slope. The sites that contribute to this wine are at lower elevations with a higher component of clay. The fruit ferments naturally in small, open-top fermenters with occasional wetting of the cap (by hand). Maturation occurs in large wooden vessels for 20 months before the wine is bottled unfiltered.

Reviews

“The 2021 Carnuntum was made from young vines on the lower-lying parcels of the Spitzerberg, a blend of 90% Blaufränkisch and 10% Syrah. Its ripe plum, berry and cherry aromas shine on the nose. The palate has an aromatic cinnamon touch that unfolds beautifully with silky energy and freshness. The ripeness that was so evident on the nose is expressed in the smooth tannins here on this medium, bright body. This is vivid, energetic and fresh.”
91 points, Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous
“This youthful, entry-level wine has stacks of red fruit and forest berry aromas, with touches of rooty and meaty character on the juicy, medium-bodied palate. Gentle tannins, lively acidity and a savory character are beautifully balanced in the long and animating finish. A cuvee based on blaufrankisch with syrah and zweigelt. From organically grown grapes from young vines in lower-lying parcels.”
91 points, Stuart Pigott, jamessuckling.com
“Assembling 80% Blaufränkisch (with 20% to 30% whole clusters) with 20% Syrah from the bottom of the Spitzerberg, the 2021 Carnuntum opens with a pure, intense and fleshy as well as spicy bouquet of dark, fresh fruits with thick skins and serious intensity. Round, lush and intense on the palate, this is a generously ripe, lush and refined, fresh and characterful Carnuntum red wine with ripe and juicy tannins and smooth, elegant acidity. Bottled in September 2023. 13.5% stated alcohol. Diam cork.”
