Planted in 1997 by Kevin McCarthy and Kathleen Quealy with predominantly MV6, the Musk Creek vineyard at Main Ridge is a considerably cooler and hence later-ripening site than Quealy’s Tussie Mussie or Seventeen Rows vineyards. As such, it’s a marginal place to ripen Pinot and low yields are a must (along with plenty of work with the canopy).

Fermentation took place in three batches with varying amounts of whole bunches. Very light hand plunging took place twice daily throughout the fermentation period allowing the whole bunches to ferment carbonically. The wine was pressed and left to settle before being transferred with light lees into a mixture of François Frères and Billon hogsheads and barriques (25% new).

Reviews

"This is a beauty. Sweet fruited and sweet spiced. Strawberries and ash, twigs and leaves, all the components teaming as one. There’s excellent linger to this release, excellent finesse. It’s not necessarily a powerful pinot noir but it has long fingers. It’s (very) good now and it will mature well. This is my favourite of the 2021 releases; it’s all charm."
94 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
“Light-medium ruby/brick-red with tints of purple on the rim; the bouquet is very bunchy, spicy and smoked-meaty, almost a bit animal, but there is an attractive Burgundy-like funk there which adds interest without detracting. Part of the whole-bunch deal, no doubt. A note of freshly Nuggeted shoe leather as well. Plentiful tannins dry the finish. There is a nice core of fruit sweetness and the wine has an intriguing individuality.”
