Over the years, Downer has worked closely with three different vineyards all on Piccadilly’s Western ridge on predominantly east-facing slopes. One vineyard that Downer has been working with since 2016 has consistently stood out. Located just opposite the Mt. Lofty Botanic Gardens, the leaner soil profile and beautiful ripening conditions in 2021 led Downer to bottle the Apollo from this vineyard alone.

The fruit saw 45% whole-bunch fermentation and was raised in a mixture of French and Austrian demi-muids, puncheons and barriques (roughly 45% new) for up to 10 months. Downer is working with tight grain, low-impact barrels to build texture and structure into the wines.

Reviews

“Woody spice, clove and cinnamon spice, pickled cherries and some liquorice notes. Fine, silty tannins in a sheath here too. Savoury as, dusty in a way, autumnal dried leaf and truffley kind of pinot noir. Serious stuff.”
94 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
"Developing an established style that is both fragrant, seemingly delicate to start, before it launches into a display of some serious pinot grunt. A bit of a chameleon. Cloudy, crimson-red colour. A super-pretty floral attack on the nose with cranberry, redcurrant, violet and spice. Slips into another gear on the palate, deep and concentrated, with a developing thread of charry, toasty oak. Will reward further with moderate ageing."
95 points, Jeni Port, The Wine Companion
"Labels don't matter a jot to wine quality, but I love the pared-back, monotone label here on this 2021 Apollo Pinot Noir. The fruit contained within the bounds of the glass is balanced, perfumed, savory/sweet, spicy/exotic and earthy/polished. It's an attractive amalgam of characters and sensations, and it lingers through the balanced finish. Gorgeous stuff. The balance is teetering but maintained throughout the wine, like a see-saw sitting on the middle of its fulcrum"
95 points, Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate
'A beautiful nose of strawberry, pitted cherry, hibiscus tea and portobello mushrooms. Medium-bodied with silky, fine tannins. Vibrant and bright with silky texture and steady balance. Seamless with very good depth and complexity. A delicious pinot. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
