Margheria is one of Serralunga’s most important and illustrious sites. The Massolino family bought their first parcel here in 1964, and the remainder came online during the ’70s. The current holding is 1.5 hectares. Sitting 280 metres above sea level, Margheria is a very chalky, sandy site, a profile that brings great elegance and prettiness, while the high calcium carbonate content brings mineral energy. The 2021 is, of course, a superb example—such a pretty, perfumed, floral wine, with a juicy, red-fruited personality, all framed by lacy tannins and tangy acidity. Fermented in large oak fermenters and aged exclusively in large casks, this is as Chambolle-like as Barolo gets.

Reviews

“The Massolino 2021 Barolo Margheria draws its fruit from Serralunga d'Alba. It reveals aromas of forest berry and wild cherry with candied orange, flint and crushed granite. I also find toasted aniseed at the back. The team at Massolino has done great work managing the tannins that feel quite silky and long, rendering a glossy sheen to the finish.”
96 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
“This has lovely aromas of blueberries, pine resin, orange rind and a touch of lavender. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with supple tannins in the context of the vintage. It has a seductive, tender, well-integrated fruit profile that makes it very attractive.”
