Pat’s Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is sourced from three rows in the southeast corner of the Chalmers vineyard on the ultra-red soils common to the area. The rows were planted in 2015 with an east-west orientation, which moderates the impact of the midday sun. All the fruit is destemmed and ferments in closed stainless-steel vats over three weeks. The wine is pumped over daily, with plenty of splashing and careful exposure to oxygen. It is pressed when the phenolic structure is just right, in this case after four weeks, and the wine matures in tank and then barrel. “It’s a great iteration of this wine with lovely fruit concentration,” says Pat. Couldn’t agree more! Just 45 dozen bottles were made in 2023; blink and you’ll miss it!

Reviews

“Sloshy and rich, unashamedly lusty and seductive. Dark cherry, glacé cherry, mulberry, lots of rosy characters, black olive, aniseed and a dash of pepper. It’s mostly about the kind of wet, dripping, ripe, black fruit characters though. There’s a squelch to texture and a slinky grip of smoky, pumice stone tannin in there too. The finish is quite sooty in flavour profile but also very plush and slurpy. One for tumblers and grazing and lusty drinking.”
94 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
“The grape of Friuli is making headway in Heathcote. Headstrong, it's not shy in colour or presence in the glass. Violets mix with black cherry, dark plum, sweet wild herbs, earth and wood smoke. It highlights both a floral side and a dark-fruited side, held tightly in place with fine, ripe tannins. Just one puncheon (500L) was made.”
