This ultra-rare wine, named after François’ grandfather, was produced exclusively from the oldest vines in the Clos de Vougeot, planted in 1910; the same vines that gifted the vast majority of the fruit for the Vieilles Vignes. The BIG difference here is that only the first bunch on the first shoot of each vine was harvested and added to the fermenter. These first bunches, being furthest from the apical bud (and closest to the trunk), are smaller, on less vigorous shoots, and produce intensely flavoured juice. It is therefore something completely unique, the essence of the Clos de Vougeot.
The first vintage of Hommage was produced in 2010 and was initially designed to be a one-off to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of this plot of vines. It was such a success that this is now released whenever the quality of the vintage allows. Only 900 bottles of the 2020 were produced in total. It isn’t cheap, but it is rare and it is always outstanding. We were lucky enough to taste this in Burgundy and wow, it’s exceptional juice.
