Chemin de Reims is a small plot of just over one hectare in Merfy planted in 1980, 1995 and 2011. It faces south/southeast and is rich in Thanetian sands, with iron-rich layers above the sandstone base. Alexandre tells us its character translates directly to the wine, making full, structured Chardonnays with a slightly ferrous texture.

This Blanc de Blancs matured in 350- and 600-litre casks, with Alexandre choosing coopers that lean towards a tighter grain to ensure a more protective environment for his wines. This, along with regular topping up, low dosage and general precision in the cellar, allows him to preserve purity of expression. The result is arguably Chartogne-Taillet's most powerful and vinous cuvée. Dosage 4.15 g/L.

Reviews

“Crystalline and distinctly minerally, light toasty elements, preserved lemon, stewed apples with cinnamon, green tea, touches of quince paste and light fino sherry notes. It’s very vinous; it’s a sensational chardonnay (tasted flat too) in its own right, with chalky edges, pucker and chew to texture and yet a sizzle of lively bubbles invigorating as it goes. Cinnamon spice, light curry leaf notes, sandalwood elements – more details. It sits more in an aperitif style, almost a party Champagne, but as it opens up, wow, the complexity comes in waves. I’d be decanting this one too. It’s sensational.”
96 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
“The 2019 Extra-Brut Chemin de Reims is a bundle of focus and tension. I would prefer to cellar it for a few years, as it is quite tense. Chalk, crushed rocks, salt, white pepper, and mint all race across the palate. This chiseled Blanc de Blancs is terrific, a wine of tremendous substance and palate presence. This serious, contemplative Champagne is lights-out. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter.”
96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous
