Disgorged January 2024. The current bottling of Mouzon’s solera cuvée, l’Ascendant, is based on the 2019 vintage and complemented by 50% reserve wines which have been drawn from a perpetual reserve (à la Selosse, Bérêche, Laherte, et al.) established in 2010. The solera is topped up by 50% each year. The blend is approximately 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay and the wine is vinified entirely in seasoned oak. After 48 months on lees, it is disgorged with just one gram per litre dosage.

It’s a wine of latent power and vinous intensity, with impressive balance and a chalky/saline character. Racy acidity and mineral tension sit easily with fleshy fruit and richness. The lengthy close is chalky with just a wisp of fragrant smoke. A superb wine that, like all cuvées offered, really comes into its own at the table with food.

Champagne Mouzon Leroux L'ascendant Solera NV (Base 19. Disg. Jan 2024)

Reviews

“Base is 2019, the disgorgement is Jan24. Around half the wine is drawn from a 2014 solera. The wine spends 48 months on lees. There is no dosage here too. Soft, creamy, shows off a lot of almond, hazelnut, green pear, toasty spices. Vanilla. Cinnamon. Ginger. Has a saline mineral charm. Sea spray and honey toast in tandem. Layers to flavour. Supple bead, almost just a light flicker of bubbles to lift the vinous expression. Much detail.”
94 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
“The NV Extra Brut L’Ascendant Solera (2019 base) is one of the best wines I have tasted from Mouzon-Leroux. Rich and layered in the glass, with notable resonance, the 2019 is so impressive. Readers will find a Champagne of uncommon depth. This really fleshes out on the back end, revealing notable character and class. In this release Ascendant is 50% 2019 and 50% L’Ascendant from 2018 back to 2014, 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay. Brut nature. Disgorged: January 2024; multiple disgorgements throughout the year.”
