Base 2017. Disgorged January 2024. This is a blanc de blancs from a single, extremely rocky Chardonnay vineyard in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Acquired in 2002, this is a steep, south-facing site of fractured chalk. The vines grow exceptionally deep roots, providing an equally deep and complex wine. As Selosse puts it: “The wine, due to the slope of the vine and the impoverishment of clay, is dry, structured with a palatability exacerbated by the concentration provided by the southern exposure.” This is always a super-mineral wine, the raciest and chalkiest of the lieu-dit wines.

Reviews

“The NV (2017) Extra-Brut Le Mesnil sur Oger Les Carelles is soft, pretty and open-knit. Gentle hints of tangerine peel, spice, orange confit, hazelnut and marzipan caress the palate. The impression here is almost more of wine than Champagne. Aeration brings out layers of fruit and Mesnil finesse. Long and exquisite on the finish, the 2017 is sublime. Guillaume Selosse notes that yields were especially low, so this edition includes more perpetual reserve than the norm. Disgorged: January 26, 2024.”
