Quinta do Noval

Single Estate Port from a Douro Icon

Quinta do Noval is an astonishing wine estate, with a rare combination of deep history and innovation. Founded in 1715, it has changed hands just twice over 300 years. The most important thing to understand about Quinta do Noval is, that unlike the other famous names in the world of Port, Noval is a single estate, a single vineyard, a producer that controls every step of production from vine to bottle. The much larger Port houses buy most of their fruit and therefore cannot control the viticulture (except at any Quintas they own). They also make wine in far larger volumes which, as we know, has its cons.

The 150 hectares of mostly high-altitude, high-density vineyards are predominantly on unforgiving schist rock, producing very low yields of the best fruit imaginable. Controlling every aspect of the vineyard work is an obvious advantage for Noval, while the attention to detail in the cellar is second to none. In another demonstration of their commitment to local ground, Noval was the first Port producer to move their entire winery and warehousing to the Douro Valley, centralising production among the hillside vineyards rather than downstream at the quays of Vila Nova de Gaia with the rest of the Port community

“Nacional is the Everest, to be sure, but Noval offers a Himalaya's worth of quality in other Ports as well,” Kim Marcus, Wine Spectator

These factors come through loud and clear in the wines themselves, from the Vintage Ports through to the outstanding and much-underrated Tawnies, and the stunning Colheitas. There is also a very strict selection process each year.

Quinta do Noval was a pioneer of the Late Bottled Vintage category when they bottled their first LBV in 1958. Right from the early days, Noval chose to treat this wine like their Vintage Port before aging: focussing on using only great-quality, estate-grown grapes, trodden by foot. And unlike the prevailing norm where heavy-handed filtration strips out so much, Noval bottles their LBV without filtration. The result is a considerably richer style that shares some of the depth and intensity of Noval’s own vintage port.

Jancis Robinson has written that “Noval ports in general have stood out in comparisons of ports below vintage port level,”. This is certainly the case with Noval’s Tawnies, where rigorous selection and impeccable aging produce a pyramid of fascinating and delicious wines rooted in finesse, purity and intricacy. Even the entry-level wine is given the Rolls Royce treatment and tastes a thousand miles away from the more common and manipulated ‘boot tawny’ made with lighter fruit (and sometimes diluted with white Port). Along with its fortified brethren, Madeira and Sherry, these complex, multifaceted and invigorating wines remain some of the greatest values in the world of wine.

In an interesting sidebar reflecting Quinta do Noval’s standing in the world of wine and beyond, US President Barack Obama was possibly the first person to receive an allocation of 2008 Quinta do Noval Vintage when he was presented with a single bottle by Portuguese President Cavaco Silva at the 2008 NATO summit (2008 being the year when the ex-US President took office). In return, President Cavaco Silva received a copy of the very first treaty signed between Portugal and the United States—you work out who got the best gift!

Quinta do Noval Tawny NV

Quinta do Noval Tawny NV

Noval’s Tawny NV is an elegant, fleshy wine with good richness and a fresh, tangy finish. Tinta Roriz, Touriga Francesa and Tinta Barroca are the major grape varieties here, sourced from both the estate and Noval’s A-category suppliers. This wine is aged for three years-plus in large oak vats before the final blending and bottling.Noval’s wine tends to be darker and have more fruitcake richness than most entry Tawnies in the market. This is a legacy of the quality of material involved and the higher rate of evaporation that occurs in Douro—as opposed to Vila Nova de Gaia—which concentrates the grape’s natural residual sugars. Showcasing an intense brick colour, this has a complex nose with youthful cherry fruit and anise. On the palate, it is medium-sweet, with rich fruit and a fresh finish. Try it slightly chilled as an aperitif as they do at the estate (and in France), or enjoy at room temperature with dark chocolate desserts or coffee.

“Dark in color, the wine has plenty of tangy tawny character. It is ripe, full and rich with caramel and spice flavors as well as acidity that is finely balanced. This is an attractive wine, ready to drink.”

"I always love this cuvée, which offers tons of character for a great price. Classic Noval notes of spicy red and blue fruits, orange blossom, cigar, tobacco, and candied mint emerge from the NV Black, and It's round, supple, and full-bodied on the palate, with nicely balanced sugar, a layered yet elegant mouthfeel, and a great finish. Delivering richness as well as freshness, you could certainly do a lot worse for the price. It also holds up nicely with air, and I was able to follow this bottle for multiple days. It's great today and will be great in 7-8 years as well, if not over a decade, although this is not something you need to hide in the cellar."

Quinta do Noval LBV Unfiltered 2017

Quinta do Noval LBV Unfiltered 2017

Quinta do Noval created the first LBV in 1958. An unfiltered Late Bottled Vintage made only with grapes from Noval’s vineyards, this LBV is an outstanding introduction to the Noval style. It is treated exactly like a Vintage Port, made with only noble grape varieties from the Quinta—Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão and Sousão. The main difference is that it is aged for four, sometimes five years in wooden vats instead of the two years typical of Vintage Ports. Simply, this is Noval’s ‘baby vintage’, with fine structured tannins, great freshness and purity of fruit. It also has a track record second to none in the category. Like the Vintage Port, the grapes are trodden by foot in lagares (the traditional stone vats of the Quinta) then macerated during a three-day fermentation to obtain the best possible extraction of the polyphenolic compounds. From a terrific year for this grower’s Ports, it is a rich and complex wine with gorgeous notes of blackberry and blackcurrant fruits, alongside hints of dried peel and spice. True to form, it’s polished and very refined with admirable poise and freshness and a twist of quality dark chocolate and sweet tobacco on the lingering finish.

Quinta do Noval Olive Oil

Quinta do Noval Olive Oil

Although clearly most famous for its wines, Quinta do Noval is not a one-dimensional monoculture. Cheek-by-jowl with a menagerie of ducks, geese and pigs, it produces a wide range of organic produce including olives, oranges, figs, clementines and walnuts. Noval farms 25 hectares of ancient olive groves (most are more than 200 years old) devoted to Portuguese varieties including Cordovil, Madural, Verdeal and Galega. The trees are farmed traditionally with no irrigation, and pruning is done by hand. To extract the best quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil, all the fruit is cold-pressed.

The style produced from these wizened trees is an unctuous, vibrant and complex oil with pungent spice and silky-smooth texture. The current bottling, characterized by characteristic spicy warmth and earthy citrus flavour, strikes a fine balance between fruitiness and bitterness; a great upgrade for adding verve to salads and dousing pasta dishes.

Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2020

Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2020

Noval’s Vintage Port is a single-quinta wine, the grapes passing a strict selection program from Noval’s own vineyards on the slopes of Douro’s Cavadinha tributary. The 2020 vintage marks the 10th Port declaration in a row for Quinta do Noval, and this year’s declaration represents only seven per cent of the estate’s entire production. Each year, the blending proportions for the Vintage Port will vary depending on those varieties which performed best. The 2020 is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cão, Sousão, and Tinta Roriz (very little Touriga Francesa was used in 2020)—all foot-trodden in temperature-controlled granite lagares. The wine was matured for 18 months in old wooden barrels. The vines at Noval always gift Ports of tremendous elegance and purity, traits that fit the widely declared 2020 vintage like a glove. Bottled in May 2022 with 115 grams of residual sugar, this is a profound Noval of exceptional clarity and sensual power.

“The 2020 Vintage Port from Noval, which was picked from 1 to 22 September, has a residual sugar of 115g/l. It is forward and lively on the nose with macerated black cherries, cassis, raisin and pressed iris flowers. Fine delineation and focus. The palate is medium bodied with an attractive peppery entry. Lively, good depth and density, this is very focussed with impressive structure behind it. Yet there is no heaviness and there is just the right amount of salinity to keep it on its toes on the finish. Exquisite.”

“From an early harvest after a hot summer which produced a small quantity of super-concentrated wines: wonderful inky-crimson colour; closing down on the nose but with underlying ripe plum and berry fruit, almost minty and exotic in its ripeness; made in a deliberately rich style with more residual sugar than normal, dense on the palate with broad ripe, gravelly tannins and a big expansive finish. Still a little raw but with beautiful opulence overall and nothing baked or stewed here, despite the heat and power of the vintage.”

"The freshness is unbelievable. The palate comes with its very own brand of elegance: a barely tamed wilderness that speaks of fragrant fruit, captured at a moment of dewy freshness, unnerving in its apparent glory. This is a kind of elixir. Wonderful, bold, elegant, sleek, profound - and completely delicious."

"There is undoubtedly a lusciousness that works beautifully here, and this might make one think that this is a more forward vintage in terms of drinking, but the cooling tannins put the brakes on. This allows this wine some well-deserved cellar time because it needs at least a decade to compose its exuberant thoughts before it decides in which direction it will travel."

Quinta do Noval Tawny Port Colheita 2007

Quinta do Noval Tawny Port Colheita 2007

The Portuguese word colheita means ‘harvest’. A Colheita Port must be from a single year and aged for a minimum of seven years in wood before bottling. In practice many are aged for considerably longer (as is the case at Noval) and so Colheita Ports can vary greatly in style.Noval’s Colheita is only made in exceptional years, when certain lots of wine with great aging potential are set aside to be aged in cascos (old casks with a capacity of 640 litres). When Noval feels the wine is ready—usually after about 15 years—a portion is bottled for release. The rest of the stocks of will continue to age in barrel for bottlings in the future. The 2007 purrs with class. Already drinking beautifully, it will pair with chocolate ganache, walnut and date tart, chocolate/orange desserts and spiced fruit flan.

“Deep tawny colour, still with a reasonable amount of red to it. Fabulous aroma of dried fruits, especially prunes in spirit (pruneaux d'Agen), walnuts, bitter-orange marmalade. I am not sure I would have picked out liquorice but it is clear once it has been pointed out to me, particularly noticeable on the palate… Rich, intense and mouth-filling, with great concentration and length. There's power but also lovely harmony between the sweetness and the freshness with lots of fruit at the core despite all the wood-aged developed flavours. In fact there is something woody here (as opposed to oaky). There's still some tannin here but it's smooth and compact rather than chewy, adding density to the energy. Immense persistence.”
18/20 points, Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com
“Ruby at the core with a broad tawny rim, Noval's 2007 Colheita is a single vintage Port of very high quality that was aged for 13 years in wooden barrels at the Noval cellar. That means it is a wine with wonderful maturity and instant drinkability, unlike Vintage Ports which often require decades after release to show their best. There are deep, soulful aromas of walnut and old polished wood, a twist of Seville orange and delightful hint of shellac in the mix. In the mouth terrific balance of sweetness and cherry-ripe fruit, with those aged notes, a liquorice intensity and concentration and such a creamy texture, flowing seamlessly into a sweet, beguiling finish with outstanding length.”

Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2021

Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2021

Noval’s Vintage Port is a single-quinta wine, the grapes passing a strict selection program from Noval’s vineyards on the slopes of Douro’s Cavadinha tributary. The 2021 vintage marks the 11th Port declaration in a row for Quinta do Noval, and this year’s wine represents only 4% of the estate’s entire production. Each year, the blending proportions for the Vintage Port will vary depending on the varieties which performed best. The 2021 is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cão, Sousão, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Francesa—all foot-trodden in temperature-controlled granite lagares. The wine matured for 18 months in old wooden barrels and was bottled in May 2023 with 97 g/L residual sugar. From the purity of its floral-led aromas and layered berry-fruited palate, this is Noval in its most elegant form. As always, it’s a wine of striking purity and intensity, yet it wears its power lightly, and the long, gently spiced finish is pure class. A delicious counterpoint to the opulent wines of recent years, it will work well in restaurants from a reasonably young age.

“Intense aromas of black fruits with blueberries, lead pencil and graphite. Wet earth as well. Full-bodied and layered with very fine tannins and a juicy and savory finish. There is such polish and beauty to this. Reminds me of the 1967. Best after 2030.”
95 points, James Suckling, jamessuckling.com
“Made from Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinto Cão, Sousão and Tinta Roriz, trodden by foot in granite lagares: very deep, opaque crimson; open and scented on the nose with a slight green undertone, multi-layered showing considerable depth; lovely sappy-minty ripeness on the palate with broad, firm, fine-grained tannins mid-palate which persist on the finish. Not a big wine but balanced and showing considerable finesse.”
18 points, 18/20, Richard Mayson, richardmayson.com
“This solidly built version displays a graphite edge running from start to finish, giving a structured feel as notes of dark plum, blackberry and black currant reduction move through slowly, building tension and power along the way. Baker's chocolate, espresso crema, licorice root and alder notes all infuse on the finish, lending a level of scale and length that sets this apart from the pack in this vintage. Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Cão, Sousão and Tinta Roriz. Best from 2040 through 2060. 1,500 cases made, 180 cases imported.”
