Pierre Labet

“Tremendous wines” from the family behind Château de La Tour

These fine Burgundies are grown and made by François and Edouard Labet—the pioneering winegrowers behind Château de La Tour in Clos de Vougeot. Under the Labets’ gifted and uncompromising stewardship, Château de La Tour has become recognised as one of the very top (you could argue the top) producers of Clos de Vougeot. Fortunately, one doesn’t have to pay Grand Cru prices to reap the benefits of this family’s undoubted talents and experience.

Already operating at a high level, the quality has stepped up further in recent vintages. Labet’s son Edouard has now entered the picture, bringing a revision of ideas and practices, and organic conversion in the vineyards.

Alongside his ancient vines in Vougeot (the oldest in the clos), Labet also farms 10 hectares of vineyards in Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune, Chorey-lès-Beaune, Meursault and Gevrey-Chambertin. These vineyards are home to many old vines and are micro-managed according to the same exacting standards as Labet’s Grand Cru vines. François has an operational hub in Beaune, comprising a seven-person vineyard team, two permanent cellar hands, and two additional hands on deck during vinification. The wines are matured in the cellars of Château de La Tour.

Domaine Pierre Labet Bourgogne Blanc Vieilles Vignes 2018

Domaine Pierre Labet Bourgogne Blanc Vieilles Vignes 2018

François and Edouard Labet’s Bourgogne Blanc comes from small parcels of 50+ year old vines in Beaune and Chorey-lès-Beaune. This is wonderfully perfumed and seductively textured with bright, fresh aromas, lovely creamy texture, stone-fruit, pear and nutty nuances, juicy freshness and lees-derived complexity. Only 20% of the oak is new.

“François Labet makes this very smart white wine cuvée with grapes from Chorey-lès-Beaune and Beaune itself, fermenting the result in 10% new 350-litre oak barrels. Showing a hint of subtle, stony reduction, this has lovely detail, focus and texture and finishes with a saline freshness.”

Domaine Pierre Labet Meursault Les Tillets Blanc 2020

Domaine Pierre Labet Meursault Les Tillets Blanc 2020

Located high on the slope above Les Narvaux, Les Tillets is one of Meursault’s finest lieu-dits, where the white marl soils translate into wines of clipped precision. To drop some names, Roulot also farms Les Tillets, and Germain and Benjamin Leroux are strong in this high-country sector of Meursault. Although Les Tillets sits in the middle of the commune, François Labet describes it as “more Puligny than Meursault”.

“Another success is the 2020 Meursault Les Tillets, a medium to full-bodied, layered and incisive wine evocative of crisp green orchard fruit, pastry cream, white flowers and fresh almonds. Taut and chalky, it derives from terraced vines below the tree line, which will be instantly recognizable to anyone who has taken a walk in this climat.” 90-92 points

AT-A-GLANCE

• This is the second family estate of François Labet and son Edouard—the pioneering winegrowers behind Château de La Tour in Vougeot.

• The Labets farm about 10 hectares of vineyards in Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune, Chorey-lès-Beaune, Meursault and Gevrey-Chambertin.

• Their Beaune hub is home to a seven-strong vineyard team, a pair of permanent cellar hands and two more assisting at harvest.

• The style leans towards relatively early picking for Chardonnay, significant bunch inclusion for Pinot Noir, and long barrel maturation in the Château de La Tour cellars.

• The estate works organically and, since 2015, biodynamically.

IN THE PRESS

“François Labet, the owner, and manager of Chateau de la Tour, is, however, making tremendous wines from his other family estate, Domaine Pierre Labet, which has vineyard holdings scattered among Burgundy’s appellations. They should not be missed.” Steen Öhman, Winehog.com
