Dormilona

While working in Galicia, Jo Perry earned the name ‘Dormilona’, or ‘lazy bones’, for failing to keep up with her team’s fiesta lifestyle. In truth, she was exhausted from chasing early morning surf breaks—that, and spending tireless hours honing her craft. Perry has embraced the moniker ever since, despite her second-to-none work ethic leading a pioneering winery in Margaret River and winning the coveted Australian Young Gun of Wine award in 2016.

Prior to establishing Dormilona in 2012, Perry’s thirst for knowledge and experience took her not only to Spain, but also France, America, New Zealand, across Eastern Australia and finally back to Margaret River. Nearly 20 vintages across the world have given Perry the clarity and confidence to allow her intuition to dictate her growing and winemaking. This natural and nurturing ethos allows the grapes and the place to speak clearly, and so minimal-intervention winemaking is key. As you might expect, growing practice comes along hand-in-hand with this commitment, and all the Dormilona wines are made with fruit farmed with organic and/or biodynamic principles.

Dormilona currently have three layers of limited release wines to their offering. The Clayface range is a collection of layered, savoury and mineral Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Chenin Blancs; each raised in Italian terracotta (flat-bottomed, handmade amphorae, originally made by Jo’s aunty). Dormilona are the Estate wines: single-site, classic drinking with benchmark quality and precision. While Perry’s ‘House Wines’ collection is a playful suite which includes some pét-nat and plenty of fun with whole-bunch, amphorae, open-fermenters and skins.

Dormilona Orenji 2026

Dormilona Orenji 2026

This year, the make-up of Orenji is 80% Semillon with only 20% Sauvignon; traditionally sourced from Dormilona's Yungarra vineyard in Yallingup, the impact of fires during the summer saw fruit for this vintage come instead from both a north-facing, gravelly site in Wilyabrup as well as a cool-climate vineyard in Karridale.A wet spring provided a good fruit set, which was hand-harvested in the cool of the morning and fully destemmed before being fermented on skins for two weeks in open fermenters. Pressed to tank for full malo and simply racked to bottle. Lighter in style to some of Jo Perry's other blends, this is skin-contact with the edges softened—an ideal gateway for those curious about orange wine but want something easy, refreshing, and moreish.

Dormilona Cupid Chenin Blanc 2025

Dormilona Cupid Chenin Blanc 2025

Chenin Blanc from Yungarra Estate, where the soil is gravelly loam over limestone. Hand harvested and destemmed to concrete egg. Primary and secondary ferment on skins, then basket pressed off to demi mude (600L barrel) and hand bottled from barrel. Cupid leans into structure and subtle complexity without losing its freshness. It’s an “accidental” wine in the best sense. Shaped by Jo Perry's instincts during the process, it's full of nuance without ever feeling heavy.

Dormilona Cherub Pet Nat 2025

Dormilona Cherub Pet Nat 2025

A finely-detailed Pet Nat made with Chenin Blanc from the Yungarra vineyard, where a cool harvest brought even ripening and strong fruit quality. Hand-harvested and whole bunch pressed direct to barrel, then left on lees until spring before being racked to tank for chill and dosage with frozen juice. Cherub leans into freshness and texture without losing its ease. There’s a quiet precision to it, with bright fruit, gentle complexity and a composed, refreshing finish.

This fruit comes from Yungarra Estate, where the vines face north and sit on a gravelly limestone base. They use a unique lyre training system giving a ballarina-esque canopy that lets in filtered, dappled light. This helps protect the grapes throughout the season and ensures a lovely development. The grapes were hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed into amphora, puncheon, and barrel. It rested there until blending and bottling.

Dormilona Clayface Cabernet Sauvignon 2025

Jo and Jim’s Yungarra site is the source for the Clayface Cabernet. Thanks to their efforts on these gravelly, loamy, limestone-rich soils, the well-established vines have firmly hit their stride. The fruit was hand-harvested and destemmed before fermenting in amphora pots, where it was plunged by hand till the cap dropped. After four months, the wine was basket-pressed back to the same vessel, where it rested for another month before being bottled directly from the pot by hand.

Dormilona Malbec 2025

Dormilona Malbec 2025

These grapes are from Willyabrup, where clean rows of Malbec sit on gravelly loam and granite soils. Jo hand-harvested the grapes and de-stemmed them into open fermenters where they sat for two weeks on skins. She basket-pressed the wine off into tank and blended with 5% Tempranillo to help open it up a bit. No oak, but still robust from the oxidative handling.
