Domaine Dureuil-Janthial

Benchmark Rully from a Reluctant Superstar

Vincent Dureuil is simply a superstar in Burgundy these days, albeit an unassuming one. Not only are the wines here unparalleled within the Côte Chalonnaise, but they also regularly compare in quality with the best of the Côte d'Or. This status has long been recognised by this grower’s peers and certain French critics and is now finally being acknowledged outside France. When you consider this reality and then consider how the prices compare with those of the Côte d'Or, it becomes clear why the wines are in such high demand and why export markets like ours receive such limited quantities.

The downside of this domaine’s cult status has been that Australia’s allocation is tiny, a reality that isn’t helped by the paltry yields in Rully in recent years.

Vincent Dureuil is no overnight success. He has been working his hide off for 25 years in his family’s vines, mainly in Rully, with some small parcels in the Côte d'Or (from where both his Bourgogne-level wines derive). The usual quality drivers apply: excellent sites; old vines; perfectionist and strictly organic viticulture; natural fermentations; no fining or filtration; and fastidious cellar work. Dureuil’s hard work, in what is a notoriously difficult area to farm—he spends up to 14 hours a day among his vines for most of the growing season—has also become renowned; a reality that was publicly recognised last year when he received the coveted “Winemaker of the Year” title from the Revue du Vin de France.

Despite the accolades, Vincent Dureuil is still one of Burgundy’s least-known stars outside France. The location of his cellar (and most of his vines) is well off the beaten track. Also, his name is hard to pronounce off the page (it’s Doo-ray), as is his village (Roo-Yee). But as Côte d’Or prices skyrocket and drive many to look beyond the famous villages for quality, more and more canny buyers and critics are finding their way here. Jean-François Coche was once reported to have said, “If I see his name on a wine list, I don't give it a second thought and simply order his wine.” We suggest you do the same.

Domaine Dureuil-Janthial Rully Rouge 2022

Domaine Dureuil-Janthial Rully Rouge 2022

Dureuil’s village Rully is drawn from three organically managed plots—Le Meix Cadot, Rosey and Montagne de Remenot—which cover just under three hectares in total. The average age of these vines is now 50 years. The 2022 fermented with a pinch of whole bunch and matured for 12 months in one-third new oak. Janthial uses a Jayer-esque pre-ferment cold soak to extract the prettiest aromas and softer tannin. Touchstone Rully.

“Three plots in all. A rich even purple throughout. A solid dark raspberry fruit, clearly a sunshine wine without any undue exaggeration. On the palate it is about the body, not the warmth, with a beautifully delineated long ripe fruit finish and the right tannin plus acidity. Impressive length.”

Domaine Dureuil-Janthial Rully 1er Cru Chapitre Rouge 2022

Domaine Dureuil-Janthial Rully 1er Cru Chapitre Rouge 2022

The 1er Chapitre sits in the heart of the village, surrounded by a stone wall, lower on the slope. Soils are mostly clay-based. Historically, this plot was cared for by monks attached to the Saint-Vincent cathedral (also the patron saint of winemakers), established in the fifth century. From vines planted in 1958, it’s a graceful and silky Rully from Dureuil this year.

“The 2022 Rully Rouge Chapitre 1er Cru comes from a parcel adjacent to the whites. The nose has one of the best amongst the reds: raspberry, wild strawberry, touches of loam and sea spray. Wonderful definition. The palate is well-balanced, with fine tannins framing the intense black cherry and bilberry notes, quite peppery towards the finish. A bit of reduction is at play, but it will come through that. Excellent.”

Domaine Dureuil-Janthial Bourgogne Rouge 2022

Vincent Dureuil crafts a cracking Bourgogne rouge. Traditionally, this Estate bottling derives from several parcels in the Côte de Nuits, principally in the communes of Prémeaux (0.5 hectares) and Puligny (0.34 hectares). The average age of the vines is now over 40 years, and the quality of the wine is everything you’d expect from this grower. A real bargain considering it could easily pass for village red.

“From below Puligny and Nuits-St-Georges. Medium red purple. The bouquet offers a certain weight of plum and red berry fruit, but less than the palate, clean and pure, succulent more than precise. A few youthful tannins to complete the wine.”

Domaine Dureuil-Janthial Bourgogne Blanc 2022

Domaine Dureuil-Janthial Bourgogne Blanc 2022

This Domaine Bourgogne Blanc is drawn from a 0.4-hectare plot of 50-year-old vines in the lieu-dit of La Combe in Puligny-Montrachet, planted on silt, clay and limestone soils. Naturally fermented and raised with 20% new Chassin oak, the quality here is nothing short of terrific—it tastes like a baby-Puligny (as always). Just outstanding for the level.

“The 2022 Bourgogne Blanc comes from vines in Puligny by Vincent’s grandfather Maurice Dureuil and is matured in 20% new oak. The neutral nose takes time to open in the glass, with touches of lime and fresh citrus fruit. The medium-bodied palate has a wonderful texture, a very good body, and depth, growing quite lively with a dab of lemongrass on the finish. As good a regional white as you will find.”

Domaine Dureuil-Janthial Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Clos des Argillières 2022

Domaine Dureuil-Janthial Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Clos des Argillières 2022

Less than three cases. We’ve been waiting an age to get our hands on Vincent Dureuil’s Nuits-St-Georges. This striking wine derives from just 0.4-hectatres of east-facing old vines (planted 1942) in the Clos des Argillières, right next to l’Arot’s Clos de l’Arlot. The soils are pink Premeaux marble overlain by 60cm of clay-rich soils (hence the name). It’s one of Dureuil’s more fine-boned Burgundy’s from 2022.

“A medium bright mid red. The bouquet does have an extra dimension without being forced. This is the lighter side of Nuits. The palate offers a lifted cherry and succulent raspberry fruit, with some good grains of tannins, balanced and long, finishing on elegance. Fine length too.”

IN THE PRESS

“If asked, I would have named Vincent Dureuil-Janthial as the number one producer in Rully, and this tasting certainly confirmed that opinion. Superb wines in both colours made by a most unassuming yet brilliantly articulate vigneron. He understands how to make wine and how to talk about it.” Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

“[Duriel-Janthial is] a wake-up call for the often rather dull winemaking of the Côte Chalonnaise…” Andrew Jefford, The New France

“Vincent Dureuil and his wife Céline took over the family estate in 1994, and today this 20-hectare domaine ranks—along with Domaine Bruno Lorenzon in Mercurey—as the finest winery in the Côte Chalonnaise. Organic farming, cultivated soils and virtuosic winemaking combine to striking effect, yielding textural but incisive whites and perfumed, supple reds that number among my favorite wines in Burgundy.” William Kelley, The Wine Advocate
