Commune of Buttons

It’s been thirty years since the first vines were put in the ground at the Commune of Buttons property in Basket Range. What was previously farming land became home to 3.5 hectares of vines planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Twenty years later, siblings Jasper and Sophie started bottling their own wine and their family’s label was born. Now in its tenth year, Commune of Buttons is one of Australia’s loudest and proudest voices in the natural wine scene. And for good reason; not only is the vineyard managed to the highest standards, but the winemaking is thoughtful and deliberate, born from a decade’s experience with the site.

Jasper Button is now solely responsible for the 4.2 hectares of vines managed by the commune, and the cellar program—curating wines from vine to bottle. The hard yards are put in first in the vineyard, Jasper’s viticultural approach incorporates organic and biodynamic practices; soil regeneration through cultivation and applications of mulch, teas and BD composts and preps; green and regenerative pruning; and dry farming in mature vines. The vineyards are low yielding, averaging out at just six tonnes per hectare. Jasper also sources a small volume of fruit from like-minded, organic growers in the Piccadilly Valley adjacent to Basket Range.

In the cellar, Jasper draws on his experiences in Europe—old-world vinification philosophies with new-world fruit. Vintages spent in Piemonte, Burgundy, Jura and Beaujolais have informed the direction of the Commune of Buttons wines—picking on natural acidity; gentle slow extractions; cool fermentations; and minimal racking form the cornerstone of the stylistic expression. Importantly, all the wines are bottled via gravity onsite, and when it comes to additions, sulphur is only added when absolutely necessary, and levels never exceed 20 ppm. This is obviously only possible thanks to the incredible attention to detail paid in the vineyard and at every point in the cellar.

The resulting wines are vibrant and delicious and speak of site above all else.

Commune of Buttons Estate Pinot Noir 2025

Commune of Buttons Estate Pinot Noir 2025

The 2025 Estate Pinot Noir is drawn from the Clover Block and Gloria Block, home to a patchwork of clones that sit in the property’s clay, sandstone and quartz-rich soils in Basket Range. Post hand harvest the grapes were sorted, then destemmed with 10% whole bunches. Maceration was for 3 weeks followed by élevage for 11 months in old and new barriques. The is a fresh, bright, finely detailed wine with beautiful natural acidity and soft, silky tannins. It's red-fruited on the nose with a slightly darker, brambly core and a generous mid palate.

Commune of Buttons Sable Syrah Grenache 2024

Commune of Buttons Sable Syrah Grenache 2024

This 40% Grenache, 60% Syrah blend comes from a single vineyard site in Blewitt Springs. The vines are 60 to 80 year old vines and sit on deep, sandy soils. The fruit was hand harvested, sorted and destemmed, keeping 10% whole bunches. Maceration took place over three weeks before 18 months' maturation in large old foudre. It has more depth and more refined tannins than the 2023 vintage thanks to the warmer conditions in 2024 permitting better ripeness in the skins and stems. According to Jasper Button, "Gentle extraction has made for a light frame and structure, there is a plum and violet core, the tannins are fine from the sandy soils, and there is a refreshing lift with the long line of natural acidity."

Commune of Buttons Nebbiolo Rosato 2024

Commune of Buttons Nebbiolo Rosato 2024

The 2024 Commune of Buttons Nebbiolo Rosato comes from a tiny 0.2-hectare planting in the Clover Vineyard, with only 1,600 bottles produced. Harvested early in April to preserve brightness and lift, the fruit was chilled overnight, destemmed, and given six days of skin contact before fermentation. It was then pressed to stainless steel to finish ferment, followed by 18 months’ maturation on fine lees. Bottled without sulphur additions, the result is a precise, energetic rosato. Tight and driven by acidity, it shows Nebbiolo’s signature red berry tones with a subtle tannin grip from its brief time on skins. Focused, lively, and finely structured, it finishes long and clean. Simply delicious!

Commune of Buttons Basket Town Chardonnay 2024

Commune of Buttons Basket Town Chardonnay 2024

The Basket Town Chardonnay comes from the Udys vineyard in Picadilly Valley and the Commune of Buttons home site. The former sits at 450 metres' altitude and has red clay over sandstone, quartz, and schist. Each parcel was direct-pressed in a slow cycle, and moved to barrel after settling. The wine took its time in the winery with a long, slow, natural ferment, and saw one winter on lees in barrel before racking into tank—with lees—for another winter. The lees acted as a protective layer to prevent oxidation and maintain great freshness in the wine. The Chardonnay shows the signature savouriness we’ve come to expect from Commune of Buttons’ whites, with a mineral throughline and great palate weight from this warmer vintage.

Commune of Buttons Pompette 2024

Commune of Buttons Pompette 2024

Jasper describes this wine as “our little bistro red blend.” It’s beautifully balanced, hitting the sweet spot of fruit generosity, acidity and aromatics. The name is an homage to the French joie de vivre. In French, pompette describes someone who is “pleasantly tipsy.”The wine is 80% Syrah from the Kas Sluiter vineyard with 20% Pinot Noir from the Picadilly vineyard. Both sites were hand harvested before destemming and fermentation over two to three weeks. The wine then matured for 10 months in fiberglass tanks.

Commune of Buttons Gloria Pinot Noir 2025

Commune of Buttons Gloria Pinot Noir 2025

A barrel selection from the original 1992 plantings of Pinot Noir in the 1-hectare Gloria Vineyard. This low-yielding, dry-grown site sits on an east-facing slope of clay sandstone, quartz, and ironstone soils, with the latter contributing a subtle mineral character to the wine. The vineyard is planted to a mix of MV6 and 115 clones. Following hand harvesting, the fruit was carefully sorted and destemmed, with around 10% retained as whole bunches. Fermentation included a three-week maceration, after which the wine was matured for eight months in barriques (20% new oak) and a further four months in tank prior to bottling. It shows bright natural acidity and a core of red fruits—cherry, cranberry, and plum—lifted by an earthy, forest-floor complexity. A thread of rich ironstone-derived minerality adds depth and savoury structure to the finish. It's a beautifully well-balanced, elegant wine.

IN THE PRESS

“Second generation grapegrower siblings Jasper and Sophie Button launched Commune of Buttons in '12 in a bid to save and restore their family vineyard in the Basket Range. The wines have evolved from the region’s slightly undone, ‘natural’ wine movement at the time to a beautiful, cohesive, and pure portfolio that represents the diversity of the Adelaide Hills. Pinot noir and chardonnay are unsurprisingly the mainstays, with smaller releases of grenache and cabernet franc part of the fold.” Katrina Butler, Halliday Wine Companion
