Like the Vieilles Vignes, this ultra-rare wine, named after François’ grandfather, was produced exclusively from the oldest vines in the Clos de Vougeot, planted in 1910. The difference here is that only the first bunch on the first shoot of each vine has been harvested and added to the fermenter. The logic behind this selection is that these first bunches, being furthest from the apical bud (and closest to the trunk), are small, and produce intensely flavoured and quite different juice—and therefore wine.

Whatever the theory, there is no doubting the unique qualities of the wine (which always reveals a more floral, expressive and red-fruited Vougeot than the Vieilles Vignes above). The first vintage of Hommage was produced in 2010 and was initially designed to be a one-off to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of this plot of vines. It was such a success that this is now released whenever the quality of the vintage allows.  If you can afford it—buy some. The notes below sum it up well.

Château de la Tour Grand Cru Clos Vougeot Hommage à Jean Morin 2018

Reviews

“5 Star Wine. About 900 bottles. Imperial purple. The nose is remarkably lifted and gives far greater intensity than the other two cuvées. More floral though that word does not describe the intensity. This really does have everything that the terroir can offer. Little touches of tannin behind, but a wealth of fruit to surmount it. There is a big gap this year between Hommage and Vieilles Vignes. Most persistent as well.” 96-98 points
Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
“A gently toasty nose reflects markedly ripe but fresh aromas of black raspberry, plum, warm earth and plenty of floral top notes. There is excellent vibrancy to the sleek, velvety and concentrated flavors that coat the palate with copious amounts of dry extract that enrobes the very firmly structured and hugely long and slightly chewy finish. This robust yet classy effort is first-rate though again, patience absolutely necessary as this should repay several decades of cellaring.”

“The 2018 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Hommage à Jean Morin is showing beautifully, mingling aromas of smoky berry fruit, cherries and plums with notions of dark chocolate, rich soil tones and spices. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's rich and muscular, with real concentration and structure, underpinned by lively acids and concluding with a long, sapid finish. Of the Château de la Tour's three cuvées, it's this one that possesses the most incipient savory complexity, but it will also demand the most patience.”
