Charles Lachaux looks after a thin 0.7-hectare strip of vines in the Rouges du Bas climat. This outstanding site stretches high up on the Côte alongside the Vosne 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts. There is very little topsoil here before the vines hit the hard limestone (similar to the composition found in Prémeaux), and the wine again offers tremendous finesse, perfume and texture.

Fermented with 100% whole bunches and raised in Stockinger barrel, this is a wine to remind us why the vines of Échezeaux—and Flagey in general—have so often been grouped with those of Vosne. Most wines from this commune could not lay a glove on this. Since 2018, this wine has been labelled with the name of its lieu-dit, Les Rouges.

Arnoux-Lachaux Grand Cru Échezeaux Les Rouges 2020

Reviews

“The 2020 Echezeaux Grand Cru Les Rouges is one of the deepest, most concentrated wines in the range. Mingling aromas of sweet red berries and cherries with notions of incense, exotic spices and vine smoke, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with rich, powdery tannins, lively acids and a long, resonant finish. All of that intensity of flavor is combined with a very modest alcoholic degree of 13.3%.”
97 points, William Kelley, The Wine Advocate
“Rich dark purple in colour. A fine beautiful explosion of fruit. Heady but with all the detail of the appellation. Strength and strictness combine in an electric core of red fruit raspberry and redcurrant, a little richer at the back. Very good fruit acid tannin balance. Fresh apples and a light peach note indicate the complexity of this wine. Drink from 2030-2040.”
94 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
