Crafted from 60% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah and 20% Grenache, with a smidge of Viognier co-fermented, the Haut Coustias is the Alary brothers' tour de force; the most distinctive wine of the Domaine. Only 8,000 bottles are produced each year, and the wine is made from 65-year-old vines planted in the rocky, limestone rich, blue clay soils (with 40% active limestone), of the Estate's highest plots. The grapes are sorted (three times) and destemmed, and the wine is naturally fermented in concrete, then spending 24 months in large 22-hectolitre wooden foudres, reminiscent of those found in the cellars of traditional Barolo producers (pictured below).

Reviews

“From a challenging vintage, the 2014 Cairanne Haut Coustias is a top-notch effort. It's medium-bodied and silky, showing spice, leather and cola notes, some strawberryish fruit and ample concentration. It won't age as long or as well as some of the other vintages of this wine, so drink it over the next 4-5 years.”
91 points, Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate
