The Obere Spitzer sub-vineyard on the Spitzerberg hill spans almost seven hectares of vines and is situated on the extreme western slope at an altitude of 210 metres. Dorli Muhr’s one hectare of Blaufrankisch vines, dating back to 1955, are planted on the steepest part of the slope where the soils are quite sandy and dry. The fruit is lightly crushed, macerated and fermented wild in small open-top vats with a small stem component and only gentle foot stomping. Maturation takes place in 600L old wood for 30 months before being bottled unfiltered.

Reviews

“Extremely youthful with elderberry, juniper-berry and red-licorice aromas, plus delicate, warm and spicy notes. This is extremely complex. So concentrated and energetic that it knocks you back in your chair, yet in spite of the considerable power, this remains sleek and super-focused. Intense rosemary and thyme notes on the palate. Incredibly refined finish that extends out towards a distant horizon. Limited production. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”

“Succulent and fresh feeling, soft, bright fruited, sour and sweet cherry juice, maraschino, light, sweet spice notes and some mintiness. A touch of cola too. Lovely, even, slick and sleek wine. Fine. Delightful it is. A step up.”
