The Obere Roterd is a sub-vineyard on the Spitzerberg hill and Dorli Muhr cultivates 1.3 hectares of the total three hectares, to Blaufrankisch. The vines lie on the western slope of the hill at an altitude of 210-240 metres. The soil is rich in limestone with sandy topsoils and stones and boulders scattered throughout and the vines were planted between 1965 and 2004. Fruit is fermented wild and macerated in large wooden vessels, followed by a 20-month élevage and just one racking.

Reviews

“Very subtle and refined with delicate forest-berry and violet aromas, plus some thyme and rosemary. Starts sleek and very silky, building gracefully through the very long finish, which is all chalky minerality. As delicious as this blaufrankisch already is, we're convinced it has long-term aging potential. Limited production. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”

“Big fog of ripe cherry, red plum, milk chocolate, fennel and white pepper to sniff on. Has hazy texture, quite a bit of depth and richness but with cut of orangey acidity and a fresh, firming finish. Concentrated, structure, but juicy and silky. Fine feeling wine here, some pinosity and then a nero d’Avola bounce. Good gear.”
